On February 18th, I filmed the protestĀ āDonāt Send Afghans Back!ā for Action Fund XminY. This demonstration was against the new agreement between the Dutch and Afghan government to send Afghan refugees back to Afghanistan even though it is still one of the most dangerous countries in the world.Ā The solidarity between the participants including marginalised people, refugees, political parties, NGOs and activists, was very strong and the battle to stop deportations to unsafe countries will definitely continue.
In this video my friend, explains in Dutch (no subtitles), her idea for an app that protects women and men who feel intimidated or unsafe on the streets. For more information: https://www.facebook.com/mygappie/
āBerlin: Negotiating Heritage, Art and Politics in Public Spaceā
All Walks of Life - Lisa Schaeffer
Artists Alice and Olivia, use public space as their stage for social experiment. They reach out to people from āAll Walks of Lifeā. Together they move, dance and act through the streets of Amsterdam in a series of four events: The Walks. This film investigates to which extent the events can be seen as a ritual of connection.
Hairstyle, as a practice of beauty, has become an important signifier for (racial) political and social power structures in post-colonial societies. The tensions of these āpolitics of beautyā are typically explored through Western debates. This study examines how politics of beauty in Tamale (the capital of Ghanaās Northern region) challenge Western hegemonic beauty ideals and juxtapose them with religious sensibilities and understandings of the roles of gender, performativity and post-colonial power-structures.Ā
At the same time, it depicts the cosmetology sector in Ghana as one of the largest developing sectors for female education and empowerment and therefore demonstrates the significance of this research area in studying womenās identity politics. The research draws on two months of ethnographic fieldwork in Tamale; visiting four different Madams and their hair salons, using audiovisual recordings, participant observation, semi-structured and informal interviews.Ā
This research tries to provide a local context, both visual and textual, to a global debate in order to allow Ghanaian (and to a larger extent) non-western women to experience more agency and independence, both in society and in debates surrounding their identity and beauty practices.
