There’s a scene in the Dalen’s closet wedding oneshot where Percy and Vex argue over whether Keyleth will be the best man or the maid of honor, because Vex had assumed Tary would be Percy’s best man, but they settle on it making more sense for him to be the maid of honor, this tracks in the campaign as Keyleth is definitely Percy’s closest friend, and Tary and Vex become very close during and after the arc he’s introduced.
I have realized in TLOVM, if any version of this wedding oneshot is adapted whether literally a single scene in the finale, or a special released down the line, this really wouldn’t track. Percy and Keyleth’s friendship is, in my opinion, the biggest failure of adaptation in TLOVM, and Vex and Tary don’t really have much either, for these versions of the characters it really would make sense for Percy’s best man to be Tary, and Vex’s maid of honor to be Keyleth, as they did do an actually really good job of adapting those relationships to the show, yet not the ones that were more ‘important’ in the campaign itself.
This is due to a decision that, although leading to the loss of one of my favorite dynamics with Percy and Keyleth’s friendship, is a decision I don’t think I wouldn’t made differently either: Prioritizing Vex and Keyleth’s relationship.
TLOVM has ~ 22 minute episodes, sometimes a long one runs closer to 27 minutes, but always less than half an hour, with 12 episodes a season, that’s less than 5 hours a season with a LOT of plot to get through each season, Matt threw a lot out there in each arc! You really can’t get to everything, and outside of the romances which had to happen for the ending to like… work, you have to figure out what’s the most important parts of the story so you can fit it all and hope that it has a similar impact as the original story, everything needs to be cut altogether, cut down (Id argue Keyleth and Percy’s friendship fits here as they do get *some* stuff), or reworked.
Knowing Keyleth and Vax’s scenes and relationship are essential, the second most essential relationship in Keyleth’s life TO the themes and emotional core of the story, is her relationship with Vex, despite the fact that she was closer to Percy, you weirdly lose less cutting the Keyleth/Percy scenes than you do cutting the Keyleth/Vex scenes. And it works the other way for Percy too, in the campaign Percy was closer to Keyleth than anyone until he and Vex got together, but the story necessitated prioritizing his scenes with Vax over his scenes with Keyleth.
It was just an unfortunate casualty of the format and pacing of The Legend of Vox Machina as a show.
