If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.

1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.

2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.

3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.

4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.

5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.

Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.

Advice on Endings

I hate ending my stories. I will drag a story on long after it should have ended even though I know it should be done with. If anyone else struggles as well, here is a list of the different types of endings that are common.

Full Circle – Mirror the beginning of the story, show how the tone has shifted from start to end

Bittersweet – Character wins at the cost of something else, creates emotional depth

Emotional resolution – Focuses more on the growth of the characters than the events of the story

Twist – reveal something that changes the readers perspective or understanding

Open – doesn’t answer all the questions or solve all the conflicts of the story, leaving room for interpretation

Quiet – Subtle, reflective ending rather than a dramatic event

Sacrifice – The character has to give something up to achieve a greater goal

Hopeful – Despite the events of the story, there is a distinct sense that everything will be okay

Consequence – Shows how the characters choices throughout the story impact the world or their relationship

Character choice – centers on a decision that defines who the character has become through the story

PSA for everyone who doesn't know, explained simply

this is NOT because of blocking screenshots, it's because of HOW streaming sites use your computer's hardware to optimise performance, which means the thing rendering the video and the thing capturing your screen aren't the SAME thing. so they can't talk together.

you can fix this by going to your browser settings, searching for "hardware acceleration", and turning that off.

ever notice that jason uses so many things that just aren't bullets? like it doesnt happen a lot but its weird that its happened enough to be noticeable. once with a blank, once with a weird antidote thing, and another time with some type of sedative?? i think?? and he always does it in clear view of another Bat and lets them fully believe he's just shooting someone. i think it's a bit at this point

i think dc needs to treat crime alley like how bruce has called it its own micro biome of gotham with its own games and rules so that jason doesnt have to be removed from where he literally grew up and came back too but so there doesnt have to be constant fighting between the bats and jason

I feel like people who say Jason needs to leave Gotham for his development forget that Gotham is supposed to be an analogue for NYC.

Do you (general) know how big NYC is?!

Its boroughs function like they're their own cities. It operates like it is its own city state, separate from New York.

Hell, each of the boroughs have their own names neighborhoods with distinct cultural identities.

That is what Gotham should be. Park Row/Crime Alley *is* its own microbiome that has its own rules.

A microbiome that Bruce, historically, does not patrol v often because of his trauma.

But sure, Jason is the only one who needs to get over himself 🙄

No, Jason and Bruce absolutely can coexist in Gotham. What they can't coexist in is the same book.

And frankly, I absolutely think that Gotham should have several titles all its own that follows key figures within the city. It doesn't make sense to only have Batman and Detective Comics for the Gotham gang. These books should overlap and have crossovers where characters from each story team up or clash or whatever the fuck.

Is that something DC.is ever gonna do?! Absolutely the.fuck not.

But is it something they absolutely could do?! Yes, if absolutely is. Y'all (general) need to expect more of these corporations.

I love 1988 Starlin Batman. Not only does he let Deacon Blackfire get beaten to death by his own followers, but in the Ronald Reagan rescue story (Batman 417-419) he learns that KGBeast would just get diplomatic immunity if caught, so he Cask of the Amontillado’s him in the deepest part of the Gotham sewer system. And leaves him there without telling anyone. That kills people Bruce!

(I thought this was a case of ‘he gets the no-killing rule later on’ but multiple sources say this guy has had that rule since 1940… for the 1980’s it’s more of a ‘if I didn’t personally stab them until their heart stopped, it’s all good’ rule.)

i constantly see people talking about wanting a batman game from the perspective of a goon and they never actually give you information on how the game progresses like they want an hour long game on it

I HOWEVER want a game playing as jason as he takes over gothams underground beneath batmans nose i want near encounters with the bat potential fights if you get there fast enough and set up communications enough to find out when hes harassing your own goons. i want option based outcomes you can choose to slaugher your goons in batmans grasp so they cant say a word, you could expend resources to make sure they never get caught in the first places, you could fight batman again and again always leaving a bit worse for ware and never winning

i want all this to culminate in how the ending goes, if youve been on edge this whole time its harder to resist turning the gun to bruce (movie option) if youve killed to keep secrets its harder for bruce to see your point of view, if youve exhausted yourself keeping everyone safe the fight will be harder

AND give me run ins with other bats tapping into comm lines listening to barbara, the echoes of stephanie in conversations and info gathering on black mask, glimpses of tim if you wander enough out of crime alley, if you go visit your grave in the day you might spot dick he might even appear on the rooftops depending on if you play chaotic enough that bruce has asked for backup

Colleen speaks so much truth here. Part of the portfolio process is showing clear sequential art/storytelling.

If I may…I want to add also how much you can learn and become a better artist then you were before by drawing the stuff you don’t particularly like drawing… Comics are hard…they’ll make you cry…stay up until ungodly hours to the pursuit of finishing in time for deadlines because you saved everything in the wrong fucking file setting… Mulling over the Writer’s notes and script thinking “oh fuck JUST HOW DO I DRAW THIS—-AND STILL MAKE IT CLEAR TO READ??!?!?!”

This stack of paper is nearly 500 pages of art that I have done for Ask for Mercy in around the 5 years I’ve worked on the comic. The first full body of comic work I’ve ever done, but achieving it…. it’s been a moment of self-reflection. Seeing the improvement from the first issue to the last.

You learn so god damn much from drawing sequential art. SO GOD DAMN MUCH.

I remember picking up that pencil for the first time and thinking…how am I gonna keep this up? how am I gonna draw 20 pages?!?!?!? some comics are hundreds of pages long….??? ongoing manga??? fucking thousands…

I’ve had to draw planes, tanks, cars, unexciting buildings, furniture, horses and the most hideous people in history and most recent. Things I was either reluctant or just straight up avoided previously because it didn’t interest me or I hated it. But it’s worth while to draw this stuff, it offers a challenge. Challenge offers the chance to improve, to refine. with every drawing made you move closer to being the best artist you can be…an artist you don’t yet know. as a pharmacy technician i can share with you some websites that give you those "coupons" for your meds!

goodrx is the most well known one, but if i'm trying to find the cheapest price for a patient i compare it to scriptcycle, and use whichever is offering the best price. you just type in the medication (PLEASE make sure you're getting the right drug, dosage, and quantity) and your zip code and they will spit out some offers for you

some pharmacies may have their own discount card to compare to as well!

if you are getting a name brand medication, you can also look at the manufacturer's website to see if they offer any evouchers for you to use too
