I've seen ones today including photos, dates of birth, place of birth even!

And also several formatted like they were writing a message to a friend! Full of exclamation marks! This is a formal document!

Yeah, I remember getting some wild ones when I was hiring manager

So many women feel the need to mention their young children in their cover letters and CVs. Some young people slip in that they can't drive, a sort of pre-emptive "but it's okay I have a bus pass". So many people go and shove their mental health issues with anxiety and depression in there.

I remember one girl had clearly been told that she needed to explain any gaps in employment in the cover letter (terrible blanket advice), and so had described how she had developed depression after a traumatic miscarriage and spent a year in a terrible spiral getting worse and worse before getting on a new medication that, and I quote, "seemed to be finally starting to work." There are ways she could have written that information if she was desperately wanting to include it (I cannot stress enough that she should not have included a word of it), but the way it was written was almost literally a description of how she would be a horrendously unreliable employee who could dip out at a moment's notice and would never be seen again, while also demonstrating that she cannot determine appropriate professional communication.

(And for the record, the latter is the actual issue. I have no problems at all hiring employees with mental health issues, and did several times hire people in recovery to help them get back on their feet. Only once did that not work out; all others were amazing, and two became some of our best employees - one is now a manager there, in fact. But if an employee can't be trusted not to over share personal information with customers or colleagues, particularly triggering topics... That's a different issue. She did herself no favours at all there, and nor did whoever told her employers will always need employment gaps explaining in a cover letter).

Another guy once wrote in his cover letter "I want this job because after years of messing about I now have a little girl, so I need to sort my life out for her, and if I can't do it even for her then more fool me." Which, like, I admire the drive and passion. But again. Why are you telling an employer that you're a flight risk. Why are you telling us this.

One 18 year old volunteered, unforced, that he was gay. Just right in the cover letter. That he sent to a future employer.

And then, of course, the thousands that send in CVs and cover letters that are horrendously mis-spelled. Again, as an employer, I care dick-all if you're dyslexic or what have you; but I do care that you didn't think it was important to get someone to proofread a professional document for you before submission. That tells me quite a big thing about the level of professionalism I can expect from you in the role. It wasn't massively relevant for the job I was hiring for (escape room game master), but if we'd had slightly different job duties (e.g. writing official soc med posts), that would be the difference between getting an interview or not.

Honestly, half of my role as a hiring manager was just... having to explain to the other hiring manager that she was being biased based on information neither of us should have had in the first place. And she wasn't a bad person, but bias gets you even if you don't want it to. Give yourself the best chance. Don't fuck it by sending in a dumbass cover letter.

It’s fun to compare and link what happens in Deadman: Dead again to aditf. In aditf it feels like Bruce was moving in slow motion because every 2 seconds he has to have this whole memories rewinding about everything that happened before ever since he met Jason. In Deadman it feels like seconds from when Bruce first appeared after the explosion, screaming “Jason!” and then found Sheila. The times between those panels have to be very close that Deadman and Jason were only able to finish 2 sentences. 

Well for this, I assume that, perhaps, the second when Jason was saying “I screwed up… I disobeyed his orders. I went out on my own” could also be when Bruce’s mind was running with some sort of thoughts like “He’s disobey order” or “I should have known he wouldn’t wait…” It would have to be somewhere between those rewinds he had, from when he was screaming Jason’s name to when he found Sheila 💀 Also Jaybin defended Bruce from Deadman saying it wasn't his fault while Deadman was like wtf was you doing Batman is.... "Bruce I forgive you for not saving me" oh Jason.

Also: this also means that around when Bruce found Jason’s body after that, his baby boy was up there doing some bing bang bum fighting some kind of evil wizard that came to catch his soul?? Then get turned into a tiny teeny little person who was only two finger-joints tall and locked inside a small cage??

Go Jaybin don't let that evil wizard catch you! Oops.... anyways...

Now you can’t be serious with this, what if everytime I saw a redraw of Bruce carrying Jason body after this and be like oh Jason’s soul was somewhere up in the air fighting an evil wizard at that moment! 🥹 I can’t be serious with this information guys? help

Okay, so I actually don't have any complete thoughts about this yet because I'm still stuck trying to figure out something else and read more comics but:

Jason's first night at Robin. They succeeded figuring out Two-Face's plan and managed to stop it, but at the end of the day he pulled out a second gun and used a hostage to threaten Batman, pointed a gun to her head. Jason then managed to persuade him to take him as the hostage instead, which Two-Face agreed to.

Two-Face: Now everyone step aside--I'm just looking for an excuse to shoot for a second time, tonight!

Two-Face: Clear the path for me, Batman-- I've got the perfect hostage now...

On the other hand:

This is a moment when Joker pointed a gun to his own girlfriend and used her as a hostage against Batman. Batman used a batarang to distract Joker and then punched him unconsious. He even mentioned Catwoman and said that he ought to kill Joker because of what he did with her but also said that he won't. These details did some damaged to my brain in some ways that uhhh I'm still trying to understand. But anyways.

Joker: Back off, Bats--or the lady gets her ears pierced the hard way!

Batman: You're in charge, Joker--Now what?

Okay those two and then the last thing:

Jason: *gives him a gun* This is the time you decide.

....Uhhhhh....huh?

Jason: *gun to Joker's head* Jason: If you won't kill this psychotic then I will, and if you want to stop me, you're going to have to kill me.

....Just wait a second, I don't think we're doing this right-

Jason: ...If you want to stop it... You're going to have to shoot me. Right in my face.

--Wait-- a sec-- Jason--

Jason: *simply didn't dodge*

JASON. WHAT THE FUCK.

Okay so like I said I still don't have a complete thought about this yet but the role of hostage and abductor kinda flipped flopped around a little bit when Jason and Joker and this is 100% a coincidence but I still found it interesting. Also this is contrived consider the last event that I shown I don't think the situation is very similar with the first two but I think there are similarities. Also I grimace as the idea of Joker being a hostage which means Batman have to care about his live enough to... whatever, but on the other hand, we have:

Abductor: *normally* If you try to hurt me I'm gonna kill this hostage! *gun to the head*

And Jason: I will kill this mf and you will have to kill me to stop me! *didn't fucking dodge the batarang*

And abductor: Don't even dare to move! If you want the hostage to live, back off! *tries to use to life of the hostage to bargain*

And Jason: You going to have to shoot me in the face, if you want him to live! *i don't have a single clue what he was doing*

Jason you are not beating the suicidal allegation.

Wait wait you’re doing something to my brain.

Usually in a hostage situation the abductor is using the hostage’s life to barter for their own life. The consequence for Batman acting is the victim’s death. (Even though he usually manages to act with enough finesse to prevent the victim dying.)

But in Under the Hood, the abductor, Jason, is leveraging his own life. The consequence for acting is the abductor’s death.

The life that is meant to matter the most to Batman in this moment is the abductor’s. Jason’s. But Batman can’t prioritize lives above each other because he needs everyone to live. He can’t handle even one death if he has a chance of preventing it. This sounds noble until you realize he values his son’s life equally with the Joker’s. This sounds noble until you realize this means he’d rather gamble with his son’s life than insure it. …and that’s why they all lose but the Joker.

The consequence for acting is the abductor’s death.

…The consequence for acting is the victim living.

Jason took himself hostage as much as the Joker.

When he thought that they were going to die, his last words is to say sorry to Batman for not being a better partner.

When he got hurt, he said sorry that he failed Batman as a new Robin.

Of course I don't hold Jason to the same standards as Batman and Nightwing and any other superhero, his morality and beliefs are nebulous at best, meaning he's not being a hypocrite when he does something bad or good. You can't say the same for superheroes though, they're the ones saying they can't lower themselves to the "lowly criminals" level or something of the like, me criticizing them for what they do/don't do is just me holding them up to their own standards.

"Fascism"—New Federal Rule Would Require Federal Funding Recipients To Deny Trans People Exist

The rule could have heavy impacts towards trans people across society.

Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"

The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.

Importantly, the gender ideology prohibition has no age limitation—hospitals could be targeted not just for providing care to minors but for providing gender-affirming care to adults, because prescribing hormone therapy to a transgender patient of any age could be deemed promoting the belief that "sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic."

This is all very bad and horrible, but I want to be clear that it’s worse and more sweeping than just eliminating trans research.

This torches everything. And I do mean everything.

A very abbreviated list of its ramifications include (but are not limited to):

ending funding for ALL DEI related initiatives

allowing the government to terminate grants at any point for any reason

preventing researchers from publishing, going to conferences, and being part of academic societies

requiring that topics must support the president’s agenda.

What this means, and if anything I’m under selling it, is the death of science and research in America. It allows the government to restrict any topic they please at a whims notice, putting officials who have no background in the topic in charge of deciding funding continuity. It controls what gets researched and if/how researchers are allowed to share their discoveries. There are no books to burn if the government never allows them to be written. This is fascism plain and simple.

Please, if you only ever write one public comment, this is the one to do.

Bringing back this guide to writing an effective public comment. This gives you the basics you need to know, what you need to include, a basic outline you can follow, etc.

Public comments are not a vote, it is a chance for you to say "here is an issue with this law I think you need to address" and provide justification for legal challenges if it goes forward:

"Comments raise the bar that agencies have to meet when making a rule; “if an agency fails to adequately respond to significant, relevant comments in a final rule, members of the public may seek to challenge the rule in court on that basis and claim it could be struck down.ˮ"

But also, if possible, don't stop at writing a comment. Don't stop at calling your representatives. You should ideally be talking to people in your community about this and organizing resistance on-the-ground; there is a good chance people are already doing that even if you aren't hearing about it.

Someone in my networks was asking about a social media call they saw for a “30 day general strike” where people make no purchases and don’t go to work. They asked, “this would make me homeless but is it worth it as a tactic?” As a union organizer, I had this to say and I think it’s important enough to share with you all:

As a trade unionist, I would like to know what is being meant by “general strike” here because a lot of people are using that term but for things that have nothing to do with strikes or what a general strike has historically meant.

It’s not a boycott, it’s not a sick out, it’s a *strike* by workers at their workplaces aka refusals to work collectively as a unionized body of workers. A general strike would require dozens of unions to not merely tell some workers they gotta work anyways and tell others to call in sick - it requires a prolonged, structured, financially supportive struggle by unionized labor.

A 30 day general strike would achieve a lot but I’m not hearing any trade unions say they are directing their members to do this (which under current labor law and many of our union contracts, would be illegal but that’s not my issue, just a barrier towards success). I’ve not heard of any strike funds put into place so workers don’t lose their housing and can afford groceries. Factually it just isn’t a strike let alone a general strike. It’s a consumer boycott meets individual sick outs and while you can do that tactic in short bursts, you can’t do it for a month without a strike fund and unions actually declaring strikes.

I fear “general strike” is becoming hallowed out of meaning by liberals. It’s a powerful tactic and that just isn’t what we’re seeing. It’s gonna leave people with a bad taste in their mouth about the prospect of an actual general strike when these fake “general strikes” don’t pan out because they aren’t leveraging our power as the people who actually run society with our labor but asking individuals to call out alone or as individuals not purchase goods.

Kinda reminds me of when people tried to define “mutual aid” as giving donations to nonprofits instead of building community networks of resiliency and support outside of capitalism and its charity arms. Pretty much every time there’s a big upswing in radicalism, terms get immediately bastardized by people outside of the work to describe tactics that don’t even share the same goals. It’s a deradicalization tactic.

You can’t just say “general strike!” and then it happens. General strikes in the past have been because unionized workers across different industries solidarity strike, which since the heyday of general strikes has been made illegal so if we want to actually do that as organized labor then we have to be prepared to have no legal protections around such a strike. That’s not the level of preparation or thought we’re seeing.

If you want to see what an actual general strike in Portland looks like, this PBS documentary on the founding of the ILWU and the 1934 Waterfront Strike which was attacked by police and vigilantes leading to the entire towns workers joining the strike, is important. These were very organized, structured affairs that didn’t rely on individualist volunteerism.

United Auto Workers declared May 1st, 2028 to be a national general strike. He (Shaun Fein) wants unions to align the end of their contracts with May Day so we are not beholden to no strike clauses. They’re building a strike fund. That’s actually a plan and that gives us enough time to energize our coworkers about it.

This “general strike” stuff coming out of Minneapolis will just get you fired and because you’re not doing it with a union, you’ll have zero protections and no strike fund to rely on.

It’s a bad idea. Don’t leverage your purchasing power, you’re poor. Leverage your labor, because that’s what makes them rich. And don’t do it alone, you’ll suffer alone.

If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.

1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.

2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.

3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.

4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.

5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.

Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
