Thanks for the thoughtful question!
One of the things that I really come to hate the most about liberals is how they have completely just disempowered everyone around them. It’s so easy to believe that there’s nothing we can do when every time someone comes up with a solution it gets shut down. The very first thing I think every single individual American who wants to make a difference in the world should do is actually start to believe things can change.
Liberal ideology focuses on the idea that we can’t change anything and that we just have to keep voting for fascists and hope that they’ll change things. They always talk about “doing the work after we vote“ and then they never do anything. When we try to boycott, they tell us boycotts don’t work. When we protest, they tell us protest don’t work. But these things do work. I promise you they really do and they would be that much more effective if everyone else also believed that they worked.
Collective action is the only thing that is going to save any of us. So the first thing I want you and everyone else to do is just start believing that things can change. You have to pick a direction and then run towards it.
When we talk about how if we vote third-party it’s basically like throwing our votes away. That’s literally only true if we believe that. If more and more and more of us actually believed in a third-party candidate, we could actually elect someone who’s not a Republican or a Democrat. The limiting belief that we have no other options and that we never will have any other options only benefits Republicans and Democrats.
The limiting belief that nothing we do matters only benefits the system.
On a grand scheme, yes, we need to start desperately advocating for prison reform and housing reform, and so many other things. But the very first way that we do that is by educating ourselves and educating each other. This is why our government wants to ban TikTok as we speak. They do not like the free and unchecked flow of information that is slanted towards leftist ideology. They do not like that people are using it as a platform to share remedies to the system. So education is key. I need everyone to start reading and start learning.
Learning how to survive and fight and undermine this system is so vital. You have to learn yourself first. And then you have to teach other people and then you have to share the new things that you’ve found. Our government thinks TikTok is dangerous because TikTok has almost single-handedly galvanized, a generation of people to support Palestine which is something our government has successfully kept the vast majority of this country from doing for almost a century.
And then it’s time for some on the ground action. I think people can get overwhelmed when they think of themselves versus the world. But all of the real revolutionaries knew that everything starts right at home in your own community. It’s good to have an understanding of how everything is interconnected, but don’t neglect the people in your own community.
The Black Panthers are largely known for being militant and carrying guns, but the reason that every single school child in America has free lunch is because the black Panthers got together and saw that black children were hungry and decided to feed them. They saw there was a need for education, and they decided to teach. They knew that that was the real revolution. And that by the way is why they killed Fred Hampton. Because he was a communist spreading communist ideology. Ideas are dangerous because ideas are bulletproof.
The real revolution isn’t just bloody and on the streets it is found right at home in your community. It is found in feeding and teaching and clothing and helping each other. Because when our basic needs are met, we have time to think. We have time to organize. We have time to move. One of the most powerful tools of a capitalistic system is that they have us all enslaved to jobs. Why do you think they want us all to return to the office free time is dangerous. When peoples basic needs are met, they have time to think.
Find the local community of activists and organizers and join them. If you can’t find any get together with some friends and start making a grocery co-op or community garden. These things seem small but they’re catching. The real revolution is found in unions and community centers and community gardens And self sustaining communal practices. There will be a time for us to hit the streets. I promise you and soon. But we can’t neglect to take care of each other.
One of the biggest ways that you as an individual can contribute, is also to be conscious of where you spend your money. The more of us that move away from a convenience mindset. The more of us that move away from fast fashion. The more of us that only shop small or local or refuse to buy new cell phones in protest the better. A lot of times this means that we have to sacrifice convenience and quality and other things as well. But that’s OK.
One of my revolutionary teachers, Ismatu Gwendolyn, says that revolutionary love cost you some thing.
For whatever you all may think of me, I think of Ismatu. She is the Work personified in the most beautiful way. She chose to make all of her communal services free and forgo licensure. She was angry with us as a community when we tried to give her money, even though she wanted her services to be free, but then she realized that we needed her to be cared for. And it has been the most beautiful thing to watch. She sacrifices her own financial security to give to the community and in return, and in response, we have said unequivocally that we will not let her starve. anatomy is what real community looks like. Sacrifice and service being met with care. Making sure that all of our needs are met. Collectively.
To be a revolutionaries is to give your life to the Work. And I don’t just mean laying down your life, I mean it is a daily practice of consuming, reading, and working.
I know this is long, and I know many of the things I’ve said probably seem inconsequential, but you really cannot underestimate how much of a difference an educated population caring for each other and standing up to the system means. So you have to believe. Vote third-party if that’s what you believe in. And don’t let anybody tell you that it doesn’t matter.you have to educate yourself in whatever sector you feel the most passionate about and then you have to spread that education. You have to go into your community and create gardens and co-ops and feed children and help each other. That may look like you and 10 friends at first and the next thing you know, it could be half the city.
The work is everything. Just dedicate yourself to the work the more people that do that the better off we are.
