It was an average Friday afternoon. I was hiding in my office attempting to hide from the rest of the people in the office.
I kept track of data and spending for the company and most days I was able to work from home, but at least once a week I had to come into the office for work. Something about keeping employee morale and visions up for the company or some shit like that. I always forced myself through the day with a smile. It was one day out of the week where I had to been seen by my coworkers and boss. I could very easily be back in a situation like my old job where I was in a building 24/7 with coworkers and no time at my actual apartment.
My phone buzzed on my desk, instantly stealing my attention from my work.
“Girllll! You will never ever believe what Alira found!!” Renna’s message glowed on my phone.
“Her will to live?” I joked back not even getting a chance to set my phone down before her message came through.
“Unfortunately no. BUTTTT she did find AN ABANDONED MANSION!!!! And not like a shity slightly bigger than average home, no I’m talking a proper fucking mansion! I guess a professor that was visiting the museum to talk to students was going into the history of witchcraft in the area and there’s a home about 4-6 miles southwest of town, out past the old rundown church. It belonged to someone but the owners were never seen and anytime anyone dared to venture into the estate to explore they’ve never come back! Alira’s got all the lore on it.”
My heart picked up pace in excitement. October was still about five months away and the girls and I were craving spooky time adventures. We’d been looking around for something because why wait until fall for some ghost hunting. Hell we’d figure summer may be a great time because we have to be less weary of hunters. Wildlife we’d still be bound to see but not as many should be out foraging and this time of year. It would be plenty warm enough that we wouldn’t have to worry about many layers either.
“Say less I’m off in two hours but I can definitely sneak out within the next hour! Meet at my place?” My body was buzzing with excitement. The others in the office had planned clubbing and bars for their weekend but I’d much prefer a ghost hunt with my ladies and getting wasted at one our places after!
“You’re closer to our Mexican restaurant, so lets meet there for dinner and margs, then stop at yours if we need?”
“Bring your weed!” I was already shoving my things into my bag looking at my message get hearted by Renna.
That was answer enough that she would come prepared. Now I just needed to sneak out without either of my bosses catching me.
Dodging them was more important that dodging a coworker. Most that were in today were the hybrid remote workers like me and today was also their only day in the office as well. Being spotted my them posed a much smaller threat. They’d probably run away with me.
I slung my bag over my shoulder, pocketed my phone and slipped my air pods into my ears. I wasn’t planning to start my music until I made it to the parking lot but putting the headphones in now helped muffle unwanted noise and help me pick up on footsteps a bit better.
I slipped into the hallway clicking my office door shut and locking it behind me as quiet as I could manage. I made a sharp left around the corner I was station at, my eyes scanning feet in front of me looking for a pair of black slack s or a pencil skirt.
I had two bosses. Rosa, who was the assistant boss as I called her. She helped with hiring, keeping everyone on task, payroll, etc.
And then there was Vespera, she was the CEO of whatever business we worked for, another useless sales department I’m sure. I’ve never paid much attention, just tracked the data asked and provided my sheets weekly. She ran the whole operation and if you heard heels and saw a pantsuit it was a safe assumption to run the other direction.
Not that she was overly cruel or anything, she was simply a very serious business woman and unless you needed to present her with something it was better to not bother her. I hardly saw or interacted with her all times were from a crowded distance due to me working at home most of the time and she was in the office. Though her mere presence and dominating air made my grateful I interacted with her so little and from such a distance. I don’t trust me knees or throat to behave the way they should.
The sound of heels rounding the corner behind me snapped me out of my thoughts and I booked it towards the front door, praying whoever turned the corner wasn’t Vespera.
The hot summer air slapped my face unkindly and I immedately grimaced at the sweat beading across my body. I started my music and moved through the parking garage and to my car turning it on.
My music was almost instantly moved from my headphones to my car speaker blasting my liked songs. I took my headphones out, returning them to their case before I grabbed the duffle bag of summer clothes I brought alone with me this morning.
I made quick work of switching my work pants and shirt out for a workout material skort and a cropped tank top. I needed as much skin showing as possible to cool down, even with the AC now blasting full force in my sauna of a car.
I threw my car into reverse and booked it to our restaurant.
——————————————————————————————————————
As I pulled into the restaurant I saw Alira and Renna’s cars parked next to each other in front of the building. I parked next to Renna’s car in the open spot and got out locking it behind me.
I walked to the entrance and opened the door smiling at Rosá who stood perched at the hostess station like always. She smiled, throwing her arms out wrapping me in a hug and placing a quick kiss on my temple. She led me to our regular table.
“You orders are already in and will be out shortly.” She shot us a wink before heading back up to the front to take care of the incoming customers.
“Okay spill the fucking beans! Renna said you got the 4-1-1 on an abandoned mansion, like a legit mansion!” I wasted no time diving into the conversation, and the chips and salsa.
“It took everything to get Abe to tell me more about this place! The professor only knew so much but I knew Abe would know more, I can’t believe he’d keep this from me!” She was genuinely shocked at the idea of Abe keeping a secret from her.
Abe owned the local museum. It had been owned by his family for generations and he knew everything about everything within this town.
“So according to him there’s an old mansion about 10-12 miles south of town! About 8ish miles from the cemetery. Legend has it the mistress who owned the house was a practicing witch. The townsfolk back in the day had tried to get rid of her but she was incapable of death. No bullet could stop her. She frightened them so much the townsfolk packed up and moved their town some miles away from her home, which we now know as our hometown today!” She beamed telling us history. “He even said mothers and fathers forbid their daughters from traveling so far out of town because the witch had a taste for female energy and try to lure the women away with her-”
“Thank you!” We collectively thanked the server as she set each plate in front of us.
Mine was nothing special just a a cheese and beat burrito with a side of of rice. Renna often still gives me a hard time for ordering the same basic safe meal since I was a kid but I couldn’t ever bring myself to order something new.
“Anyways he said once the town had settled in their new area and had a solid foundation, some of the townsmen went to the witches home to take care of her once and for all. They were tired of living in fear of their wives or daughters possibly being lured away by the witch.” She paused to take a drink of her margarita before continuing. “Well the next night rolls around and the men aren’t back like planned. Half of the townswomen are in hysterics praying relentlessly to god, while the other half refused to let their men be lost without a fight. They armed themselves with whatever weapons they could find left behind by their husbands and sons and began the trip to the witche’s home. Only half of those women came back about a day and half later bloodied, ghostly white and incoherently babbling about the devil. One of the women finally spoke very briefly about their encounter with her mistress of the home.” Alira’s food and drink now long forgotten as her excitement retelling the story grew. “So there’s this diary in one of the cases and Abe pulled it out to show me the exact words this woman wrote from the small description she could get from one of the younger wives who had gone. I may or may not have napped a photo of it when he left the room,” she cleared her throat awkwardly, “you know how forgetful I am when I want to remember something though!”
Renna and I craned our necks to see the picture.
‘It’s taken two days to get anything from any of the women that isn’t incoherent babbling, but Sarah finally opened up for the briefest moment, though I fear it will be all I will get from her or any others. She said when they arrived to the home everything looked normal on the outside and it was only when they were climbing the staircase to the front doors did they see the blood. They had no time to even throw around possibilities before the mistress of the home swung the door open. Sarah said she had to have had a deal with her devil just by how ethereal she looked. No normal woman could look that beautiful. Her voice was smooth like butter and Sarah swore her own blood sang out to this woman witch. None of the women remember what happened next. One minute this witch is smiling at them from the front door and the next thing they know their at the tree line on the outskirts of our town. No memory of what happened with the witch, no memory on walking back to town, and no memory what happened to the rest of their group. I fear none of the women will talk because what is there to talk about, none can remember.’
Alira’s face couldn’t contian her excitement as Renna and I finished reading the diary entry.
“I mean clearly we know whoever this woman is, she wasn’t an actual witch because witches the media portrays don’t exist. She was probably some wealthy daughter of a socialite that moved far from her own family, but regardless she clearly made a HUGE stir in our town early on, and the fact that unlike the other women in the town later accused of witchcraft, she was never killed. Which is a giant feat to be a woman accused of witchcraft in that time period and not be killed, at least without blaming another woman to get the town off your back. Not only was this woman an accused witch, she wore that shit like a badge of honor and I need to get into her home. Keeping a diary or journal was very popular especially for rich women back then. If we could get lucky and find something of hers, anything, that could tell us anything more on her that would be the best case scenario. Worst case is we waste a big portion of our Friday evening in an old mansion but if there’s nothing interesting we can leave earlier and get fucked up at your place!” Alira was bouncing with excitement talking faster than I though possible.
“What why my house!? I haven’t cleaned anything all week!” I pushed my now empty plate away from me as I sipped on my watered down margarita.
“Because you have to sleep in your bed when you get fucked up and you are too friendly when you are drunk so I’m not sending you ass alone in an Uber to your place, It’s way easier for Alira and I to share and Uber since she’s just a black off from me.” Renna finally pipped up.
“Touché bitch touché.” I laughed.
The bill came shortly after and we paid before saying goodbye to Rosá and heading out to the parking lot.
“Okay so let’s all go to your apartment quick and get changed and pack all our shit and then we can head out from there! Renna was the planner of the group so neither Alira or I argued when she took control.
“Ma’am yes ma’am!” I dramatically saluted to her, dodging her smack just in time before dashing to me car. See you in five minutes hotties.” I screamed as I threw my bag and then myself into my vehicle. I blasted the music and headed to my place, the girls trailing behind me.
