A character is using something when it suddenly breaks without any obvious reason
Incomprehensible panic was Rory's initial reaction, wordless ramblings running through her mind at light speed as she stared at the ruined book in her hands. She had barely picked it up and turned the page when the spine simply fell apart, losing a few signatures of paper at the same time. She held the thinner half in her left hand now, the rest in a slightly crumpled heap on the floor of Law's room.
“Shit.” Rory could only curse at the problem before her, unable to take action. What could she even do? She didn't know how to fix books, and even if she did, she didn't have the materials to do so. She wasn't even meant to be in her captain's room in the first place. How would she explain not only trespassing, but destroying one of his books?!
He was an avid reader, and Rory could only assume he was fiercely careful with them as people tended to be when they were attached to something. She had known several bookworms throughout her life, and it was simple fact that to damage a book was blasphemy.
Thoughts of the many different and uniquely creative ways her captain could kill her finally spurred her into action, and Rory quickly crouched to pick up the thicker half of the book that had torn apart.
“How did this even happen!? I barely touched you, you stupid book!” Rory hissed at the paper as if it were able to understand as she hurriedly organised the signatures as best she could and tried to rearrange the book as if it were whole. “You've got Law-san for an owner, you should be tougher than that!” It was no use. The cover of the spine was torn in two, and no matter how she tried to curve it around the text block, it was clearly ruined. Maybe she could just leave it on the floor by the chest of drawers and sneak out. He might assume it just fell off during one of the Polar Tang's more complicated maneuvers that often jostled everyone's belongings around. Yes, that would do. Rory placed it down, rearranging it to look slightly askew but not as messy as it had, as if the impact were what had split The Inner Workings of the Human Body in half, and not Rory simply turning the page. Nodding to herself, Rory swiftly rose to her feet and turned to leave...
...and came face to face with her captain. He was actually uncomfortably close, so much so that she could inhale that strange scent of his, the metal tang of steel, disinfectant and the attractive musk of his very worn sweater. Rory squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, trying to ready herself for what was to come, then slowly cracked an eye open and looked up at Law.
He had one brow raised quizzically, his lips pressed into a thin line. “What, exactly, are you doing in my quarters?”
“I-I was looking for you!” Rory stammered far too quickly, her nerves betraying her guilt. Already she could feel a warm flush creeping into her cheeks, and she knew her ears were pressed flat against her head. Damn cheetah ears, betraying her all the time.
“In my empty room?” Law slipped his hands into the pockets of his hoodie, “What were you just whispering to?” he started to lean over her shoulder to look at the mess on the floor, and Rory panicked.
Before she even realised what she was doing, she had the fabric of his yellow and black hoodie scrunched in her hands as she tried to gently urge him back. “I-uh- Kachire said he needed you in the engine room, you better go!”
“You're a terrible liar. Is that my book?” Law's voice took on an edge as tilted his head, easily becoming a stone wall that Rory was incapable of moving. He didn't even stumble, even as she pushed against his chest.
“N-no!” she squeaked out. If her rosy face hadn't been enough to give her away, the high pitch of her voice just then surely would have. Succumbing to her fate, Rory hung her head and gave up trying to push him out of the room. In a rush, words barely spaced apart enough to understand, she whispered, “I'm really sorry I got curious about your books when I saw you weren't in here and I tried to read one but when I picked it up it just fell apart I'm so so so so sorry.”
Then, she waited for the inevitable. He would become angry, and would no doubt tear her apart verbally before he involved kikoku, for she had committed the ultimate sin against a book lover's precious-...was he...shaking?
Rory hesitantly looked up, and was completely caught off guard to see Law's shoulders shaking with barely contained laughter, his face scrunched up into what was possibly the most adorable grin she had ever seen. Surely noticing the way her mouth fell open in shock, Law burst out laughing, his head thrown back with the motion of it. Rory could only stare, mesmerised. She had never heard him laugh before. Not like this, anyways. He had such a nice laugh. Why didn't he laugh more often? Then again, why was he laughing now of all times?
“W-what- what's so funny?” Rory hesitantly stammered. Law only shook his head at first, working on calming his laughter, and it reduced to chuckles he stepped around her and crouched to pick up the book, examining the cover and the way the spine had ripped.
“I don't care if you broke one of my books. I'm surprised this one lasted this long – it's been creased on the spine for years.” Law snorted, straightening out and dropping it roughly on his desk. As if to emphasise how little he cared, he strode over to his bed and carelessly swept the books littered on the covers onto the floor. Even Rory, who was not particularly protective of books, cringed as the corners became dented and the hardbacks hit the boards with a loud thud. She watched as her captain allowed himself to fall onto his bed and cross his arms behind his head, eyes closed.
A long moment passed where she only stared, before Law sarcastically drawled, “What, do you want to join me?”
Rory snatched the ruined book – or, well, half of it – off of the chest of drawers and flung it at him. He caught it without even opening an eye, and she cursed his observation haki for what must have been the fiftieth time before turning and storming out of his cabin, slamming the door behind her.
If she had stayed a moment longer, she would have seen the way his mouth curved up into a softer smirk and heard him mumble, “You don't have to be tough for me.”
I think this is probably a stretch, but it's self indulgent and I had fun, so xD
Unrelated sketch of Rory cause why not.
