You're really good at art and the only way I can ever draw decent hair is to literally draw each strand so like I was wondering if you had tips on how you draw hair?

aw tysm, i’m doing good lol! also omg i’m honored to be getting this question, this might be the first time 😭😭. i’m definitely very passionate about this & i’m not sure how much of this you already know so i’m going to go all out, apologies. i feel like written tips will not help much. i’ve found they only give you surface level knowledge and don’t really help you improve. what helps me improve is experimenting like crazy, even if it makes the perfectionist in me mad. i made a simple process video and linked the google drive if you want to watch that. i’m not sure how much of a help it will be because i did it extremely fast. however, if you want more advice, please feel free to dm me or something!!! seriouslyyyyy. i love helping, especially with something like art. but pls know i’m not like an expert and this is just my hobby so i guess on EVERYTHING. BUT, some quick things that i’ve picked up from the guessing are:

1. start with a base that is already in the basic shape/form of your hair. when i don’t like the placement of certain parts of the hair but i do like the shape, i use the liquify tool to push it around until it looks good. or i just erase it and redraw. also, block out the hair as if it’s a silhouette first, don’t just draw individual hairs because it gets confusing and overwhelming sometimes. the base color should be in the middle of your highlights and shadows (that might be different for some people but i think it works well). also, if you want your character to look like they’re in colorful lighting, you might not want to come to me for advice on that because i quite literally guess until it looks good 😭😭. once you have the base, you can create a new layer and make that a clipping mask. i do this almost always. when i don’t like the way the hair looks, i can just go to the base layer underneath the rest of the colors and change the shape without having to deal with a bunch of colors. idk if that makes sense, but i display it in the video.

2. once you have your midtone, to get a basic shadow/highlight color, you can do a few things. one thing is to open a new layer on top and use the overlay (for highlights usually) filter and the multiply filter for shadows. for shadows i color with a tan-ish color tbh and for highlights i just do whatever looks good tbh 😭😭😭. altho this might not always be the same. another option is to start with the midtone and then use the sliders.

- for shadow: go up in saturation, down in value

- for highlights: go down in saturation, up in value

3. if you want the glowy look like i try to give my art, i usually outline the hair in near-white (with a slight tint). i also add little strands that are moving in the direction of the hair. make sure these strands have a place of origin on the scalp, or at least give off the illusion that they do. if they’re moving in a random direction, they might not make sense.

4. otherwise, i’m not the most eloquent person out there, so i’m not sure how to explain most of the other things i do. but i’m sure i can help somehow if you’d like!!!

anyways here’s the video. i sped it up, so sorry if it’s hard to understand me LOL. also take half of this with a grain of salt, i probably do not know what i’m talking about (this stuff might only apply to my style).

OKOK you actually have a REALLLYYY good base!!! it’s so cute. i attached a vid of how i do it at the end of my post and i basically show u what i do for hair texture :333 (i think that’s more towards the middle of the video). i think u could definitely apply it to your drawing really well. just lmk if that doesn’t explain it well or if it doesn’t work 😭😭😭😭
