He’d never had to.

I have seen multiple people say Avery was a boring fmc but they often disregard the fact that being uninteresting was a type of survival method for her. She was a girl with nothing and it is very evident in the scene where she is in the principle's office for acing in a physics test how people react when someone like her try to stand out. Keeping her head low and silently working towards college was her best option. And later with so many people trying to use/kill her for her money she thought keeping a low profile was the only way she had (plus alisa literally asked her to do so). She later does becomes more authorative and free and start standing up for herself and people that was the whole point of her character arc.
