“Lucas!”

Jeff and Bubble Monkey look really excited to see the taller blond, Jeff waving and the little monkey doing his best to mirror his movements.

“Jeff! How’re y’ doin’?”

Lucas was almost about to reach in for a hug, but halfway through settled for reaching out for a handshake, just in case he accidentally crushed both Jeff and Bubble Monkey in a bear hug.

Jeff is elated to see his taller friend again, and so is Bubble Monkey. The little monkey remains on his usual perch on Jeff’s shoulder, making excited noises. Jeff eagerly shakes Lucas’ hand and, to his credit, gives Lucas an awkward but genuine hug. 

 “I’m doing well, mostly just tinkering with some new devices. I was headed to see Tessie if you’d like to come with!”

Jeff watches interestedly as Giegue, in his disguised form, takes such lengths to try and act more human-like to get the rabbit more used to him. He really does appreciate the alien’s effort, and at least Giegue looks a little less robotic this time around. His hand stays there for ten long seconds, until finally the rabbit decides to take the risk. 

 It’s not long, and the rabbit doesn’t seem especially affectionate (even in rabbit terms), but it does smell the disguised alien’s hand with a twitch of its little nose. After, it doesn’t seem to care again and settles itself again in Jeff’s arms.

 “Well, it noticed you this time. That’s a start! 

Would you like to hold it now?”

[          Again.  There’s an inevitable twinge of relief that washes through his mind and dulls the ever-present concern that something bad is (somehow) going to happen when the rabbit responds in a perfectly ordinary manner.  Yes.  Ordinary.  It is little more than a wild animal after all and in the cases of those that are classified as ‘prey animals’… it would make sense to be exceedingly cautious, especially towards a creature as unnatural as himself.  Were it not for such a disposition, basic survival would certainly be challenging to say the least.  Cue a brief glance down towards the hand which touched the rabbit as though studying it just to make certain that nothing is amiss.  In any case, progress has been made and that alone is satisfactory enough to himself.

           But, it could be better.  And such an opportunity to further improve almost seems to conveniently appear when Jeff asks if Giegue himself would like to hold the rabbit.  At that, his gaze automatically shifts back to the life-form in question where he just stares until… a decision is made to just chance it.  Even if this (admittedly) seems like a big leap forward, otherwise being too slow in his approach won’t produce superior results. And in any case, risky action is a key part of learning at times.  Now his gaze flickers towards the precise way in which Jeff is holding the rabbit. There must be a correct way of holding it and if Jeff’s technique is what it should be, then it would be sufficient to mimic that.  ]

—-‘That seems like an acceptable course of action.  But, before I do so, it would be prudent to elaborate on the precise technique required to hold it properly.

I would rather not waste time by committing entirely avoidable missteps.’

The disguised alien takes a good long look at the cautious animal and seems to think to himself for a little bit, but ultimately he agrees to give holding the rabbit a try. This makes Jeff give a little supportive smile and he hopes that this sort of thing helps Giegue get a little more used to Earth, especially since his and his friends’ adventure. 

He’s pretty sure he’s holding the rabbit correctly, but he’s no professional. He just hopes the rabbit won’t get nervous when he gives it to the alien. 

 “Well, I read in a book that you’re not supposed to hold them by their ears, and that you at least want to hold their back or hindquarters and sort of... cradle them, I suppose.” 

 He thinks a little before looking up at Giegue. 

 “You know, Ness and the others can telepathically communicate with animals. Can you hear the rabbit?”

At first, Jeff merely looked confused when the Commander walked into his cell unannounced, carrying two boxes with him. Wasn’t it the holidays around now? Was Pokey sending the Commander out on dangerous missions this close to Christmas? But as soon as he hears about the party and the food the Commander brought for him, Jeffs eyes grow wide and begin to fill with tears, which he quickly tries to scrub away.

“I’d… I’d really like that, Commander. You’re my friend too.”

His voice wavers a little bit, really wanting to give the Commander a hug, but he resists and instead stands up from his desk. He only has one chair in his workspace, so he gestured for the Commander to sit on the bench with him where Jeff performed his checkups on him.

“It’s been a while since I’ve eaten with a friend. Come sit next to me and you can show me what you’ve brought; maybe Pokey brought it from my time…”

Jeff can’t help but get a silly grin when Claus presents him with the scarf. His friend had clearly made it himself, and Jeff puts it on as soon as he gets it. It’s soft and will definitely keep him warm in Winters, and help him out when he misses Claus. He also smiles at the pastries from Lucas, eager to share them with Tony and Maxwell.

When Claus tries to apologize, Jeff shakes his head a little and pulls Claus in for a hug, albeit a slightly awkward one.

“It’s brilliant. Thanks, Claus. It means a lot.”

@lxttlebxtreckless​​ asked:  (Lxttlebxtreckless) “Happy Christmas, Ness.” Jeff gives his called friend a clumsily-wrapped box of his homemade bottle rockets and fireworks, perfect for New Years. He made sure there were plenty for even his little sister to try, and all of them had the Onett label he put in his big bottle rocket.

While the raven shows gratitude and excitement over the gift – even showing surprise at the thought of Jeff finding the time to craft a few bottle rockets for his friend – he’s certain that his sister would cross her arms over her chest and pout in disagreement. She’s not of the idea of fireworks, which only makes Ness assume that there will be more for him! The Onett label even makes him feel at home by just holding one bottle rocket. “These are gonna be spectacular for New Years!”   the psychic chirps excitedly, black hues following the figure of his friend carrying enough explosive in the bag.   “Thank you! But we should celebrate New Years together. I’m sure Poo and Paula will join too!”

“Alright Boney, don’t eat it all at once or Father Christmas won’t bring you anything else.” Jeff hands the dog a large bone before turning to the twins. “Happy Christmas! I hope you like these presents.” For Lucas, he got several leather-bound, blank journals, and a ballpoint pen. For Claus, there was a multi tool that Jeff obviously built himself. Besides holding a knife and compass, it probably had some kind of laser or firework on it. He also have the redhead a soft peck on the cheek.

Boney’s tail is wagging a mile a minute as he spots the bone in Jeff’s hand.  The second he gets his teeth on the bone, he’s trotting off to some obscure corner of the house to enjoy his treat in peace.  There’s a soft laugh from the twins before focusing their attention back on Jeff.  Lucas’ eyes light up at the sight of the wonderful journals Jeff got him.  He’ll certainly find good use for these!  Lucas throws his arms around Jeff with a bright, cheery, “Thank you!”

Of course,Claus’ present from Jeff is just the kind of thing he should expect from his friend.  It’s silly, but very practical in some ways, and he loves it.  He also appreciates the kiss, though it still always catches him off-guard whenever it happens.  Claus lightly touches the spot on his cheek before grinning at the blond.  He presses a kiss to Jeff’s forehead and then says, “Thanks.  For everythin’.  I appreciate it.”

(Lxttlebxtreckless) “I might be a few days off, but I think it’s Christmas.... if not, I just got you a present.” He gave the Commander a small mechanical mouse, obviously made from spare parts from Pigmask weapons. The little robotic mouse gave a squeak and quietly sat in the Commander’s hands, until laying down and entering sleep mode. Jeff gave an awkward smile. “It’s not much, but I deserved to get my friend something for Christmas...”

Mismatched eyes blinked slowly. Hints of confusion crossed the chimera’s face as his head tilted slightly. Christmas…Christmas… Oh, was that the name of the event his master had been holding? He vaguely recalled something about gifts as he’d been leaving the crowded hall. Was this day meant for giving gifts? 

Silently, the commander took the little robotic mouse into his hands, and once he did his eyes widened in awe. He watched it move, squeak, and curl up comfortably in his gloved hands. It was rare for the Commander to show any form of emotion, but if one had to describe the look on the chimera’s face, it would have to be like that of a child’s on Christmas Day. He was astonished by the little creature, left stunned as he looked it over before carefully moving it to one hand to gently pet its head with the other hand. 

“It’s a mouse…” 

He said softly, turning his gaze upwards to look at the blond. 

“….I will…keep it safe. Thank you, Jeff.” 

What now? There was something else he had to do, right? When receiving gifts, one had to show gratitude. That was something he’d learned last time. So… 

After putting the napping mechanical mouse into the pocket of his jacket, he wrapped his arms around the blond. It was stiff, strange, mostly since the Commander was still not the best at ‘affection’. But…there was something genuine behind it, and he’d initiated it without being prompted. 

“Thank you….”

Jeff crept in quietly to where Fawful was sleeping, trying not to make a lot of noise. He was trying his hardest not to startle Fawful awake, but he had heard things and was making sure Fawful wasn’t having some sort of night terror. He gently tried to wake his friend, hoping what he was dreaming about wasn’t too terrible.
