Hmmm I just saw someone holding up Weird Al as a perfect unproblematic paragon and if it catches on I will be Concerned. Not because of the man himself but because we've seen this cycle play out plenty of times before and I know what happens next.

Look, I like the guy, he's a good musician and parodist and from what little I do know about his personal life he seems like a decent and kind person. But he's human. That is a human being. Eventually he's going to say something a lot of people disagree with or not say something when people want him to or some blemish from his past (maybe not even something all that bad!) is gonna surface and people are gonna have to confront the fact that he's not who they hyped him up to be. And when that happens an unfortunate number of people are going to treat it as a betrayal because of the unrealistic standard they set.

Entertainers are people. You can find them fun or even admirable and still not try to make saints out of them.

i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping

this also goes for aesthetic or -core titles. 'y2k tank top' is going to get you resellers and fast fashion brands advertising to people looking to meet a current trend. 'thin strap crop tank top' is going to get you a diverse group of results and not upcharge you to hell and back

additionally, shop second hand when you can, second hand and thrift sites typically organize clothes by the cut and color. theyll be more affordable than a depop seller curating you a style to sell you

nearly everyone, including and especially Catholics, misunderstands the quote from Saint John Henry Newman about “being deep in history”

So the quote, which us found in the introduction of his An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, reads as follows: To be deep in history is to cease to be protestant. There are two (main) erroneous ways in which I believe this quote, and the essay itself, are interpreted.

The first is by Catholics. They tend to throw around this quote with a meaning to the effect of “if you study Church history and read the Fathers you will see that they unanimously teach the entirety of everything the Roman Catholic Church teaches in the current year.” Now this is a little hyperbolic but the usage is very often something to that effect. Or something to the effect of “nobody before 1517 expressed any of the views of Luther or of the other Reformers.” This is incorrect and not what Saint Newman was intending to say. In saying this he was attempting to dispute a specific claim by the reformers and by his (fellow, btw, as Saint Newman himself was still a protestant at the time of writing this essay) protestant contemporaries. The claim being that the Reformers were merely intending to ‘ strip away’ the various ‘accretions’ and ‘corruptions’ that Rome had embraced over the centuries in order to return to a ‘pure’ Christianity of the primitive Church. His argument against this is that when you do the historical study you find no such period where there is a sort of uniform, lean, biblicist Christianity. That, instead, you find—when you actually immerse yourself in the patristic sources—the seed form of various doctrines that the Reformers completely discarded: Marian veneration, intercession of the saints, prayers for the dead/purgatory, Eucharistic theology, monasticism, episcopacy, papacy, etc. He does not argue that all of these things are there robustly, clearly, or fully elaborated—quite the contrary. The whole point is that it was messy. And it was the sort of messy that, in his view, only Roman Catholicism could make sense of.

The second is by protestants. They will argue against Saint Newman on this that you can find certain Fathers expressing things that sound, to their ears, like certain Reformation tenets such as sola fide or sola scriptura. But again, that was the point. You have Fathers agreeing and disagreeing with each other on things, you have language being used that can be taken in various different ways. That’s the mess that needs cleaned up/clarified. And even if certain Fathers did hold to certain reformation tenets, they also held to the aforementioned ‘Romish accretions.’ The unambiguous purity of the primitive Church is a fiction. The question then becomes wherein lies the solution to cleaning up that historical and intellectual mess? Wherein lies the ability to parse the truth from error? For Saint Newman, the answer couldn’t be found Protestantism.

There is more to be said about abuses of the concept of development wherein protestants do have valid critiques but I’m not going to get into all of that right now.
