loving the internet progression where the meaning of “poor people deserve nice things” went from “poor people are also allowed to buy things like fast food, video games, and brand name items instead of eating gruel and sitting on the floor lest they spend their money frivolously” to like, “if you charge money for your labor youre classist bc i cant afford to pay for it” especially when it comes to art, books, and clothing

Idk i just think telling authors to their face that youre going to pirate their books or buy specifically from amazon which sells at below cost to drive book stores out of business bc you don’t want to pay for their labor but deserve to access it anyway bc “poor people deserve to read too” is a little Bold. i think telling yarn dyers and spinners that they’re classist and pricing you out of your hobby bc they charge $30 for a skein of yarn that they hand processed from sheep to dyed yarn is insanely insulting. i think you all need to be Less Entitled to other people’s labor

Let us be very clear about yarn, however. That price is more than reasonable for handspun yarn. As a spinner, I know. But as a sheep farmer, I know a few other things too. Wool was being bought at ten cents a pound in the US a few years ago. And then skeins of machine spun yarn selling at a minimum of six dollars for 8 ounces. This is ridiculous. The sheep farmers lose money on keeping sheep, unless they do it for meat only. And someone is making tons on machine processing of wool. Plus all the wool processing plants, the sheepskin tanning plants, seem to have closed, leaving the farmer with nowhere to process their product, unless they buy the machinery to do it at home. I am sure that we could make cheaper machine spun yarn if we still had the factories to do it in America. And yes, knitting seems to have become a yuppy pastime. But let the yuppies spend tons on handspun wool. Maybe we need new coop factories for tanning and spinning. Maybe then our products could be affordable again. If you want to knit cheaply, start a fair trade spinning factory in the US. I promise you the people who love raising sheep will be so glad to be able to sell you wool. #farming #value added products #coop

I have sweaters made in the 1950s that look new and have never pilled a day in their lives. Meanwhile, a brand-new cashmere sweater from a midrange brand like J Crew or Banana Republic will develop pills on the car ride home.

There’s a reason for this! If you want to make knits that don’t pill, the yarn has to be made a certain way. you have to comb out the shorter fibers, since those are what work themselves loose and form pills, and you have to spin the yarn tighter.

This means you’re better off using high-quality wool or cashmere to start with, since the staple length will be longer and there will be less too-short fiber wasted. It also means that you will need more raw material, since tighter-spun yarn is denser and you won’t be using the too-short fibers. The resulting fabric will wear like iron, and last for decades.

But what if you don’t give a fuck about any of that? Well, then you could start with lower-quality raw materials, not bother to comb out the shorter fibers, and spin it looser. You’ll save a ton of money! Plus, knits made from looser-spun yarn feel a bit softer, so you’ll also trick your customers into saying ‘ooh, this cashmere is so soft! it must be Quality.’

And guess what happens the first time you wear it?

Whereas I have sweaters that are 60+ years old, that I wear frequently, that just don’t pill. Because they were made to last. And it’s not a coincidence that they were also made by unionized garment workers who were paid a living wage.

"It costs that much because it takes me fucking hours" is now the song that constantly plays on a loop in my head when someone asks me why my editing rates/book prices are "so high" when I'm either barely breaking even or am making roughly a dollar in terms of sales because I'm trying to keep my work as affordable as possible but also so I can afford to fucking eat.

I’ve been thinking about this joke a lot recently (it also comes in a version with a rock or a diamond which has to be broken):

A giant ship engine failed. The ship’s owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure how to fix the engine.

Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was young. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship’s owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. The engine was fixed! He carefully put his hammer away.

A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.

“What?!” the owners exclaimed. “It’s ridiculous! He hardly did anything!” So they wrote the old man a note saying, “Please send us an itemized bill.”

The man sent a bill that read:

Tapping with a hammer ………………….. $ 2.00 Knowing where to tap ………………….. $ 9,998.00

I have invested years of my life in knowing exactly where to tap and how hard. That’s what you’re paying for.
