Kuwei is underrated
My man deserve more attention. There's like no edits or fan media about him.
Plus he has such a cool backstory and personality.
donating my heavily annotated copy of house of leaves to the local library so that the person reading it gets a 5th layer of narrative to be confused by
I'm already in love with House of Leaves, I would simply fall in love with OP.
Honestly, I'd fall in love with anyone who handed me an annotated copy of their favorite book.
Nikolai Lantsov is the exception to my hatred of arrogant/cocky men. He's earned that privilege.
Might have to read Six of Crows just so I can understand what my mutual is yapping about half of the time (I don’t like reading fantasy books, but might for them💔)
PLEASE OMG ILL LOVE YOU FOREVER
I don't think people understand what I mean when I say I was deeply disappointed by the death of Dunyasha Lazareva.
Did I hate her? Of course I did.
However, that doesn't change the fact that I still felt like she was deeply underdeveloped, and was lacking the potential. She felt more like a page filler than a true threat. I really wish she would have appeared sooner, and was overall just a bigger problem in the second book. The character concept fascinated me, and because she is so lazor focused, and overall just appears to be a very prideful, entitled, and condescending character, it definitely would have been interesting to see her conflict with not only Inej, but the other Crows too.
To me, she only really existed to show Inej's strength, and that really didn't cut it for me. We know how strong she is. She climbed an incinerator well her shoes melted into her feet, she climbed up cargo crates when she was bleeding out, she survived the menagerie as a young girl, and she once let someone cut through her flesh to rid herself of the marking of it. She didn't need to be thrown in with a professional mercenary for us to know she's badass. Dunyasha should have had time to exist outside of her, and to overall just make things a lot harder to manage.
For example, what if she went to Nikolai first instead of the rafters? What if she grabbed Sturmhond by his lapels and began raving about being the true heir to the Ravkan thrown? What if she got into Zoya's face?
I'm not sure, but I would have liked to see such a problematic woman cause more problematic scenes.
freak4freak is always so awesome but another character dynamic that i think is really great is freak vs freak. you're the only person who understands me and i'm the only person who understands you. unfortunately this also does not stop either of us from hating each other and in fact it might even make everything significantly worse for everyone involved
KUWEI AND WYLAN 1000%
I really wish we would have gotten an epilogue from Kuwei's perspective. I need to know what's going on in that little shit's head.
Kuwei land over here ig
'and as i sailed away in a boat pretending to be dead, my last thoughts of ketterdam were 'wow, i hated that. i never want to see the inside of a tomb again. i will live somewhere out in the open and not stuck between four walls'. i thought of jesper and the not-jespers - the scary one with the cane and attachment issues, the little kind stabby one who needs a hug, the tall grisha that took the drug when i told her not to, the big one that died, and the one that had my face who i liked me until i kissed his jesper and then he threatened to kill me and said my drawings were bad. they all had so many problems. they spent time sitting in a tomb and kidnapping people and arguing and flirting. i'd spent my hostage tomb days watching them like my own little reality tv show that i could add fuel to the fire in when i got bored. at least i got to kiss jesper before i left.'
This is why I love you Seb. Thank you thank you

hmmm I know we can surmise that kaz & jordie were the iphigenia of the series, in that, whether it's fair or not, they had to be sacrificed for the benefit of everyone else. jordie had to die and kaz had to suffer it and live with it, because if kaz had lain down and died on the barge, it would have had a crazy knock-on effect. inej likely would never have escaped the menagerie, or matthias from hellgate, jesper would probably have fallen foul of debtors or gangs some way or another (he gets at least one beating from enforcers), nina would have been caught up w the dime lions trying to get matthias out of hellgate, and there's even some more tangential ones, like kuwei probably dying at the ice court and marya being stuck at saint hilde.... but I wonder what would have happened to wylan.
kaz had him under dregs protection, so he never suffered the way he did ("kaz is your luck, merchling."); no beatings, etc. without that... well, it's tempting to think that wylan would have just been killed some way or another. and yeah, maybe, but miggson and prior couldn't get him, could they? wylan has that scary glimmer of the biting-animal, kaz-style survivalist in him, and he had a goal; amass enough money to get the hell out of ketterdam and start anew. but how far would wylan have gone to get that money? van eck's letters pushed him into the arms of dregs munitions building. without the perpetual intervention of kaz-- protection, constant jobs even when there were better people for it, good pay-- how quickly would wylan have turned into someone more like kaz? he has a core of decency, but he gets the privilege of keeping that, because kaz helps him to. alone, would he have surrendered it, or been forced to surrender it, just for a chance to survive? I don't think he would have ever willingly given up. it's not an accident that kaz and wylan's first days in ketterdam are so closely paralleled, or that they have a set of similar skills/traits; it's explicitly said that wylan would also be able to count cards and control decks like kaz can, if he wanted to. and after he finds out about his mother, wylan's comforted by the idea of retribution for van eck, that kaz could destroy his father's life. they're a little bit too similar. but kaz is there to take the moral fall, for the most part; all wylan has to do is help him. but without kaz... well. that's another story, isn't it?
I'm still mad about all the people comparing Kaz Brekker to the Darkling when his very obvious SAB trilogy character foil is Nikolai btw
Nikolai and Kaz:
- Both the second of two sons, out of place in taking up the mantle of the first.
- Both stand out because of their wit. They’re both strategic thinkers, but lean into jokes, wordplay, as much as their unique, quick thinking.
- Both like to invent things. Creative thinkers. Dramatic people…theatre kids.
- Both are coded/admitted to have PTSD largely because of how and in what condition they lost a brother.
- Contrast: an actual bastard who must feign legitimacy for survival in his sphere versus a man presumably born under wedlock in a stable home who feigns being a bastard for survival in his sphere.
- Contrast: the very top (royalty) versus the very bottom (homeless -> criminal) of societal hierarchy.
- Both really can’t shake desire for a Suli woman they work with who has made clear she can kill him if he gives her a reason to. Made said woman legally or metaphorically a Queen and meant it.
- Dogs.
Shhh another contrast- (not my idea, found it on a reddit thread awhile back) ps love this breakdown.
One is rumored to have claws for fingers, stained with blood, and is supposedly a demon.
And the other actually is.
wylan at 23 learning how after 7 years all your cells are officially regenerated. him realizing he now lives with a body his father never touched. him telling inej about it. inej quitely weeping that night because even if the memories are still there this body is entirely hers. idk if it makes sense and it is very badly worded but i'm at work and it's driving me insane.
Kaz, after realizing these hands never touched Jordie, neither in life or death, and feelings strangely numb at the thought.
well, it just keeps getting worse. May I also offer you: Nina, years after Matthias's death, sobbing because all remnants of his touch are gone.
Just say you hate me.
Jesper, realizing that one day, his body will forget the day he took a spin at the Makker's Wheel- and now he only has to get his mind to do the same.
well, how am i supposed to sleep in peace now?
Jesper, holding his mother's clothes, hoping to get a semblance of the touch that his body forgot
Sigh 💔
Matthias, drifting in and out of consciousness, thinking how lovely life must be, for Nina to be the last thing his body remembers.
screaming crying throwing UP oh my GOD

Kuwei hate angers me to no end.
-He's a teenage boy.
-His father was just killed.
-He is wanted internationally.
-He is Grisha.
-He is one of the few people with the true knowledge of the extent of Juda Parem. I mean seriously, he's seen his own kind drugged and collared, and is being forced to try and recreate said drug.
-He offers to sacrifice himself multiple times in the book, just to end the whole thing.
-He was first hidden amongst the Shu, with a father working desperately to hide/contain both their powers, then he was locked in a cell in Fjerda, and then he was trapped in a tomb for the majority of the second book. Yeah, you're going to go a bit stir crazy.
-He's a little pyro
Also he's just a hilarious character.
He's sulky. He's sarcastic. He plays coy. He'd twirl his hair around his finger innocently if it was long enough. He's dramatic.
The only reason you guys actually hate him, is because he kissed Jesper. And yet, most of you would have done the same thing. Leave the kid alone.
next soc book/novella should be jesper and wylan figuring out how they can have their wedding without public suspicion when the guest list consists of the the queen of fjerda and her husband, a random fjerdan guard, living saint dragon queen who just ended a war with fjerda, the dragon queen’s consort who was the former king of ravka, one of the grisha triumvirate of ravka who is also a famous tailor, an infamous gang leader and crime boss who owns all the best known clubs in Ketterdam, the son of the man who invented jurda parem, and an urban legend pirate queen vigilante who’s Ketterdam’s most wanted.
