As a Brazilian, let me try to explain the origins of Brazilippines:
Brazil and the Philippines are often seen as the “black sheep” of their continents. Like most of Latin America, the Philippines was colonized by Spain for centuries, which is a unique experience for them to have within Asia. This makes the Philippines not only “different” within Asia, but have more similarities with Latino culture than most Asian countries.
Brazil on the other hand is by far the most Asian country in Latin America, as there are millions of Brazilians today of Asian descent due to a large migration from Japan and China in the early 20th century. Asian culture is quite embedded into Brazilian culture, and Brazil is actually home to the largest Japanese population outside of Japan.
The Philippines is the most Latino Asian country. Brazil is the most Asian Latino country.
Brazil is also rather isolated from the rest of Latin America due to us being the only Portuguese speaking country, while the vast majority of other Latinos speak Spanish. From what I’ve gathered, Filipinos also feel isolated within Asia.
Also, Brazil and the Philippines both have extremely vibrant, albeit chaotic gay culture. Gay people in Brazil dominate dodgeball, while Filipino gays dominate volleyball. Gay fandom culture in Brazil and the Philippines are both absolutely feral. Both countries seem to produce endless amounts of funny gay people.
As a Brazilian, I have an uncanny ability to see any online video and know it was taken in Brazil just from vibes. I’m usually right. However, every single time I’ve been wrong, the video was actually from the Philippines. Every. single. time. The vibes of the Philippines are so similar to Brazil that unless I can hear people speaking Tagalog in a video, I often mistake Filipino viral videos as being Brazilian.
