“Please make it stop,” Maddie grimaced, speaking softly as a loud high note hit her ear. She sighed watching the boy in the front of the room try to sing. She would never say anything, it looked like he was having fun. But it was embarrassing, not to mention painful to listen to. He had been singing for the past ten minutes, looking very proud of himself. Her head was pounding but she did her best to keep a somewhat pained smile on her face. She almost didn’t notice someone near her until she happened to glance over. “Oh hi.” She flushed, hoping they didn’t judge her for the harsh words.

“It’s not dumb at all! Most junior novels get overshadowed by their movie counterparts. I do recommend reading them though, they give you a better view of the characters than what the movie gave us,” Corey explained. He chuckled when the scowl formed on Maddie’s face. “I absolutely suck at chess, you’re facing the worst player in the world. This?” he pointed at the chess board, “Is all luck.”

“I don’t have much else to do, I’ll see if my uncle will send me the book.” She knew her parents would give her anything just to keep her satisfied and quietly hidden here, but she preferred going to her uncle for small things. She merely pouted in return, looking at the game thoughtfully. “Well you’re better than me. Next time we play monopoly, I’m the Monopoly queen.”

“Me saying that to you, when people have been telling me that for years.” She shrugs, lips quirking upward slightly. “There’s nothing wrong with being curious, but just be careful who you voice your curiosity to. This place is filled with people who don’t want questions asked about them.”

 it bugs her, it’s not right. everyone here looks too perfect, too pretty, too pure. she’s never trusted things that look too perfect, perfect things are fabricated- the only question is who fabricated them and why.

“A beautiful outside doesn’t guarantee the same on the inside. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover and all that,” Maddie drawls, tapping her fingers on her leg. “Although I’m not sure why you would say that, you’re like crazy pretty.”

“It’s really no problem, honestly I’m glad to have something to do other than just get lost in my head.” She shrugs, twirling a lose string from the bottom of her shirt absently. “So I take it, your new?”

She smiled feeling hopeful once she said she knew  her way around the place. ‘’Really? Oh my god, thank you. I feel so lost.’‘ She said waiting for the girl to lead the way.’‘My name is Nirvana by the way.’‘

Maddison began walking toward their destination, keeping a slow pace so the other girl could keep up easily. “Of course, it’s really no problem.” Her eyebrows raise in surprise, lips quirking upward. “That’s a really cool name. I’m Maddison -- but I prefer Maddie.”

“Sure, I happen to know my way around here pretty well.” She flashes a small smile and glances at the paper, pausing briefly. “Alright, it’s actually pretty close to where mine is. I’ll show you, I've got free time -- come on.”

“That’s good to know. However if that’s your attempt at faking a smile, it needs some definite work. Do you want to tell me why your face hurts?”

“humor me,” corey smiled. “have you seen ‘disney’s descendants’? or have you read the prequel books?” they were speaking over a game of chess. corey moved his knight in a reachable distance from the other’s king. “check,” he said. chess wasn’t his game, he was pretty rusty at it, but he enjoys a good game.

“This is about to make me sound dumb but, I didn’t even know there were books about them. But I happen to have seen the movie, actually.” Maddie scowls down at the game as she considers it. “I’ve played chess twice in my life before now, this isn’t exactly fair.”
