(Or: how Gordon Sumner righted things for me)
I have been reflective over the past few weeks since the green paper surfaced. I have never doubted that Sam and Cait "ARE together, um, and we do work together, and things are pretty good"... (thank you, Captain) but to be frank, squaring my rock-solid belief in their togetherness with that damned paper has been a real chore.
That said: as gross, unsavory, and intentionally misleading as it is, I have come to the conclusion that the marriage certificate is in fact legitimate.
Too many copies (at least one to a well-known shipper/believer) have been sent with the same return address, same font, same information, same watermark... and I, as a reasonable and thinking person, cannot dig my heels in and pretend that I haven't seen them. That they're all fakes, orchestrated in some vast conspiracy or shell game.
What I have been asking myself is this: what made me so certain Sam and Cait were married in the first place?

But what I *didn't* have was PROOF.
There *is* none, and I have accepted it.
To tell you the truth, I don't even think I care, and I'm not sure why I ever thought it was important.
Randomly the other day, for no reason whatsoever, an image popped into my head... one I haven't thought of in a year or more: Caitriona and Sting seated on the couch together on the James Corden Show. And then it hit me.
In 1987, Sting released his album "Nothing Like The Sun". The very last track on it is this:
It's only a 2-minute listen. If you can't right now, the song is about a man and woman who, in their own eyes, are married. It didn't take the church, the government, an officiant, flowers, veil, permission, or witnesses. It's organic. It's out of the box. It's earnest, it's meaningful, it's pure.
"I think if me and Caitriona were together, we wouldn't say. Why would you?"
Sounds like someone wants to keep off the grid.
Having your names on a certified marriage license sure would be revealing, wouldn't it? But none has ever surfaced. Not in 6+ years.
It only took 18 months after August 10, 2019 for the green paper to turn up for anyone who paid for a copy of it.
What I now think is this:
SC consider themselves committed to each other, and they live accordingly.
That commitment can not have taken place in legality, or there would be a record.
That commitment can not have taken place in legality, or Caitriona Balfe would be a bigamist.
Caitriona Balfe is no bigamist. So stop it.
The commitment that matters to SC is the one they have to each other, so signing a mArRiAgE cErTiFiCaTe has no meaning to them.
They did it to please someone else.
They avoided doing it in their own relationship for a reason. Or maybe several.
Why she was inclined to sign one with T is something we don't know... yet.
The MC does contain false information because while IDGAF where T lives, I do know that Cait does not live at the address shown. Not in 2019. Not now.
Sam lives with Cait. Cait lives with Sam. On [REDACTED FOR PRIVACY] Drive in Glasgow, Scotland.
"I got married. That's pretty outrageous. It's something I never thought I would do."
Sounds like someone didn't want to do it.
Antis can pee their collective pants over that green paper, but it changes nothing. This isn't the bombshell they'd like to think it is. It's a legal paper registered with a governing body. It's a nice, neat, paper trail to state what Caitriona, Sam, Tony, their costars and friends couldn't.
IDGAF who has the legal title of "husband", because "wife" has never named him, doesn't live with him, and has 6+ years of a life together with "telehubby".
So I'm gonna be over here, believing as I always have, that these two goobers are soulmates. I'm going to look forward to a truncated season 6 and a longer season 7. I'm going to keep writing RPF one-shots about Sam and Cait because it makes me happy and I am hurting no one.
