Beau: Caleb. My point was why would we even wanna go talk to Vess DeRogna? Beyond us being too busy, she’s like… one of the prime murderous candidates of the Cerberus Assembly.
Caleb: Yeah, we are on the same page.
Beau: I was just asking if you were gonna go take her up on her offer and you were like, ‘well, we’re really busy!’ and I was like ‘THAT’S NOT THE POINT, THOUGH!’
Caleb: Yeah, but Beauregard, we want to at least create the semblance of cooperation. I mean, we don’t trust them, they know that, they don’t trust us, we know that. But if there is even a-a hair of doubt in their minds that perhaps… their Empire, ha, citizens.. feel the need to cooperate or feel allegiance to country-
Beau: Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah, no I’m WITH IT, it hit!
Beau: Yeah, I was just checking in with you, man. Just wanted to know what the greater plan was, wanted to- how we were going to- DO this.
Caleb: How we are going to turn these peace talks into actual peace?
Beau: Nah, you know what, never mind. Think we’re on the same page.
Beau: …Do you want to go talk to Vess DeRogna today or no? Cause she was like, ‘ah, we’re gonna be here, on this boat, and we got time, if you wanna like come, and talk to me, I’ll be here!’ so I was just WONDERING if that was a plan. But if not, then like, fuck her.
Caleb: No, I think sometime in the next few days, i-it would make sense to try to, again, put out a show of good faith that we are trying to coordinate and also not wait until the day and see what happens, you know.
Beau: Mhm. So what, tomorrow, you wanna do this shit tomorrow?
Caleb: Let’s go tomorrow.
Caleb: If you wanted an escort over to the Cerberus ship, you could have just asked outright.
Beau: I was just loopin’ you in on a potential plan, man.
So I love this conversation a lot, because it shows so much GROWTH, babey. Caleb and Beau still have trouble not talking past each other. Beau tried to start a conversation, Caleb misunderstood and dismissed her inquiry, Beau went away and thought about it and then several HOURS later came back and tried again.
And they talk past each other again, throughout this conversation! But they frequently course correct, try to guess where the other party has changed paths, and they keep trying. They show each other SO much patience in this conversation, even though that mutual understanding still isn’t there.
These are two people who have decided, over and over again, to give each other the time of day. Caleb and Beau recognise that they are of a kind, and they put in the effort to check in with the other and understand where the other’s head is at. Sure, they could get frustrated and throw their hands in the air and do their own thing, like they used to, but they don’t. Because the other is their collaborator in so many areas, and they know that now.
And it’s really… sweet, the final miscommunication? At the end, Caleb says, “I am happy to do things for you, you only need to ask,” and Beau says, “but I want to do them WITH you.” Neither of them are quite speaking the same language, but they’re still trying to help each other, spend time with each other, no matter how much they fumble the communication. It’s just… really good.
