While working on this, my cartooning professor actually told me I was ahead of the rest of the class in terms of knowledge/experience with comics :D
he then also told me he had higher expectations of me because of that, and was going to nitpick me and grade me based on my skill level :/ (It actually motivated me a lot, but I was dYING)
So I was going to do a previous / next thing for navigation - but! you cannot edit posts with polls! therefore I will now be linking the Tiding Over Masterpost and telling you what part this is.
I am so fucking tired, this was supposed to be a quick doodle *sobs* I need to go to bed, I got way too carried away with this.
Drawing them with dem big ol' eyes is fun~ And Sun is probably purring your ear off.
Little bit of fish lore for those interested: both solamer and lunamer are apex predators and are known to prey on humans when opportunity strikes. It's illegal to swim in waters known to contain mers, and recreational waters for human use are kept free of wild mers through various means... though accidents do happen.
Sun is a very unusual case, overly friendly and playful for a wild adult mer, and very curious towards humans for better or for worse.
Moon... not so much. Quite the opposite, but he is Sun's mate so avoiding him is not an option if you want to continue interacting with Sun.
i love this duo and their offscreen friendship so much 😭 WE NEED an episode of them!! i have a part 2 animatic to this in the works, and if i get more inspiration, this can turn into a mini series with the rest of the gang.
can be seen as ship art or not. i just luv these two 💕
I ALSO… have a youtube channel now!
here’s a surprise animatic version of this comic uploaded to there
I think some of the loneliness of autism is that you feel like you hurt people just by Interacting Wrong, but you don’t know how to Interact Right, and the more effort you put into it, the more exhausted you are and the more artificial it comes across (with the end result of people still being upset with you). and it’s not anyone’s fault for not liking Being Interacted With Wrong, and it’s not your fault for doing it so wrong, but it is very, very lonely.

The Protector
The night was the kind that sank into your bones.Cool air, a drizzle that never quite became rain and the hum of a city that never learned how to sleep. You walked alone, hoodie half-zipped, bag slung low, sneakers squeaking softly against the wet pavement. Work had drained you again, another shift full of polite smiles that cracked around the edges.
You kicked at a bottle cap and muttered under your breath,
“If one more customer snaps their fingers at me like I’m a dog, I swear-” You sighed, dragging a hand down your face. The streets were mostly empty, just the occasional flash of a passing carr or a neon sign flickering half-dead in a window.
“Work, sleep, repeat” you said to no one. “The loop of it all” Your voice echoed faintly, and the sound of it made you laugh soft, a little sad. “God, I talk to myself too muuuchh” You turned into a narrow alley, the shortcut you always took home. The air was cooler there trapped between brick walls scrawled with graffiti and the scent of wet asphalt. Your playlist hummed through your earbuds, low and comforting, drowning out the small sounds of the night.
Then-
FWSSH.
A sudden rush of air swept right above you, fast, sharp, and heavy, like something large cutting through the space just overhead.
You froze.
Your breath caught.
“What the hell-?” You looked up, blinking at the dark skyline. The clouds hung thick, swallowing the stars, but… something had moved up there. Something big. The streetlight flickered once, twice. You caught a glimpse of a shadow, long, broad-shouldered, moving across the rooftop and vanishing just as quickly.
You stood there, heart thudding, trying to convince yourself it was a trick of the light. “Okay, maybe I do need to sleep more-” You took a step forward and-
“Stop.”
The word sliced through the silence like a blade. Calm. Deep. Commanding. You froze again. The sound came from ahead, somewhere in the dark corner of the alley.“Who’s there?” you demanded, voice shaking just enough to betray your nerves. “If this is some creepy prank-”
“Don’t go that way.”
You blinked, heart hammering. The tone wasn’t threatening, it was firm, protective. A voice that sounded like it belonged to someone used to being obeyed. “What?” you asked, glancing around. “Why not?”
“There’s trouble around the corner” the voice said, low and steady. “A man’s there. Armed. My brothers and I are handling it. You need to turn back, now.” You stepped back slowly, eyes darting toward the end of the alley. “Handling it?” you echoed. “What are you, some kinda vigilante?”
“…Something like that.”
The shadows shifted. You could make out a tall figure perched against the far wall, broad, still, outlined faintly in the spill of streetlight. A faint blue line (maybe cloth) moved with the breeze. “Okay” you said slowly, trying to keep your voice calm.
“If you’re telling the truth, then… thank you, I guess. That’s… nice of you”
“I’m not here to scare you” he said quietly. “I just don’t want you to get hurt.”
The sincerity in his tone caught you off guard. You stared into the dark, trying to see his face, but the shadows refused to give it away. “Who are you?” you asked softly.
There was a pause, a heartbeat of hesitation. “Someone who keeps the city safe” he finally said. “That’s enough for tonight.”
You couldn’t help the small laugh that slipped out. “That’s the most mysterious answer ever. You sure you’re not Batman?”
That earned a quiet chuckle, low and smooth.
“I’m not him” he said, amused. “But I’ve heard the... uh... comparison before.”
You smiled, the fear ebbing away bit by bit. “Well, mystery guy, thanks for looking out for me. Not that I love being told what to do, but… I’ll let it slide.” He chuckled again.“I’ll take that as a thank you” he murmured, and for some reason, it sounded like a compliment.
The silence that followed wasn’t uncomfortable, just charged. You could feel him still watching you, protective but curious, like he couldn’t quite believe you weren’t running away.
“Do you do this often?” you asked softly. “Protect random girls walking home?”
“Every night” he said. “Not just girls. Everyone who needs it”
“That sounds like a heavy job...”
“It’s what I was trained for” he replied. “It’s what I do best”
There was pride there, but also something quieter, loneliness maybe. You couldn’t tell. You smiled faintly. “Must be nice, though. To have a purpose like that”
That seemed to catch him off guard.
For a second, you thought you saw his silhouette stiffen, as if your words had reached deeper than you meant them to. “It’s… worth it” he said after a moment. “Even if it gets lonely sometimes”
“Lonely?”
"Part of the job”
You nodded, stepping forward just enough that the light brushed your face. “Well, for what it’s worth, I think what you’re doing is pretty incredible. Whoever you are.”
“You’re not... scared of me?” he asked, almost quietly. You shook your head, smirking a little. “Should I be?”He let out that same soft laugh again. “Not unless you plan on committing a crime”
“Good” you said, voice playful. “Then I’m safe”
“You are” he assured, and his voice softened, warmer now. “At least, you will be, once you head home” Before you could respond, a distant shout broke through the alley:
“Leo! We got him! Let’s move!”
You blinked. Leo.
You glanced back toward the shadows, eyes wide. “So that’s your name?” He paused mid-step, clearly caught off guard. You couldn’t see his face fully, but you could feel his fluster through the silence. “…It’s Leonardo” he admitted after a second. “But most people just say Leo.”
You smiled softly, your tone dipping just a bit teasing. “Well, Leo… thank you. For saving me from a very questionable night” He tilted his head, like he wanted to say something else, but duty pulled at him. “You should take a different route next time. Avoid this alley” He said. “Guess that means I won’t see my mysterious protector again?” you teased, voice light. “Maybe you will” he said, and though you couldn’t see it, you knew he was smiling. “Just… stay safe”
You nodded, slowly backing away toward the main street, eyes still locked on the dark figure. “Goodnight, Leo”
“Goodnight...”
You turned the corner, heart fluttering at the mere thought of his firm but smooth voice. Up above, Leonardo stayed still for a moment, crouched on the edge of the roof, watching as you walked away, your hair catching a faint shimmer of streetlight, your voice echoing softly in his ears, and the look of those eyes that looked at him with curiosity crossing his mind. He exhaled, slow and deep. A small smile tugged at his lips, unexpected but warm. His hand rose instinctively to his chest, palm pressing over his plastron where his heart beat steady, strong, but a little faster than usual.
“She wasn’t afraid...” he whispered to himself.
For a moment, he just stayed there, watching the faint glow of the city, feeling something flicker inside him that had nothing to do with battle or duty.
Then-
“Leo! Come on, dude!”
He blinked, shaking himself back into focus, and stood. His body moved in silence, graceful and powerful as he took one last glance in your direction. And with a soft push of his heel, he leapt, disappearing across the rooftops, the faintest glimmer of blue fabric trailing behind him.
Below, you kept walking, smiling to yourself, whispering his name under your breath like a secret no one else in the world would believe.
“Leonardo…”

.
.
.
The city hadn’t changed much. Same restless hum, same tired glow of streetlights painting gold halos on wet asphalt. And yet, for you, everything had changed since that night.
Every time you passed that alley, your chest tightened with memory. That calm voice from the dark. The steady promise that you’d be safe.
“You should take a different route next time.”
You had. Every night, without fail. But still... Still, you couldn’t help glancing up at the rooftops. Hoping. Some nights, you’d walk slower, pretending to check your phone, secretly listening for that soft rush of air you’d once heard above your head. But he never came.
Weeks passed. You started to tell yourself maybe he was just a strange dream born of exhaustion. Maybe “Leo” wasn’t real at all. Still, something in you missed him, that voice that had made you feel seen in a city where everyone kept their eyes down.
.
.
.
It was late again. Too late.
You were walking home after another overtime shift, jacket pulled tight against the wind. The streets were nearly empty; a few neon signs blinked weakly, their reflections shimmering in puddles. Your mind wandered, half daydream, half prayer...
“If you’re out there, mystery guy, you sure picked a bad time to disappear.”
You turned down a side street—wide, not your usual shortcut, but quiet. Safer. Until you heard it.
A shout.
A scuffle.
The sound of someone... beggin? “Please, take the cash, just let me go!”
Fuck.
You froze halfway through the block. Around the corner, you saw two men cornering another man against a dumpster. One shoved him while the other grabbed at his bag. The moment the victim’s eyes met yours, he bolted past you in pure panic, leaving you alone.
Both thieves turned.
You felt your throat go dry.
“Well, look what we got here” one of them sneered “Witness”
You stepped back, voice shaking. “I-I didn’t see anything, okay? I’ll just go.”
“Too late for that honey” the taller one said, smirking as they began to close in. Your pulse hammered in your ears. You turned to run, but one lunged forward, catching your wrist. The grip was tight, painful, making you cry out. “Hey, relax baby” the guy said with a laugh that didn’t sound human. “We just wanna talk-”
“That’s enough.”
The voice came from above, clear and cold as steel. The men froze. You blinked up, heart skipping. A blur of blue dropped from the rooftops, landing between you and them with a thundering crack that rattled the ground.
The figure straightened, tall, broad and armored. Metal gleamed under the streetlight. Two swords crossed over his shell. A blue mask framed his face. For a heartbeat, no one moved. Then one of the thieves shouted, “What the hell is that?!!!”
“Someone you don’t wanna mess with” the figure said.
Before you could breathe, he moved. A flash of motion, fast and precise. One kick sent the taller man sprawling into a trash bin. A twist, a block, a single punch to the other’s chest and he crumpled with a groan.
It wasn’t just fighting, it was art. Every motion clean, every strike controlled. Not a wasted breath. And you just stood there, frozen, staring, half in fear, half in awe.
He turned his head slightly toward you, those blue eyes locking on yours. They were sharp, glowing faintly in the dim light, familiar, somehow.
"Are you hurt?” he asked, voice calm, gentle now. You shook your head, words failing you. “I-I.. um..no..I… you…”
The goons scrambled away, limping into the dark. Leonardo didn’t even watch them go. His attention was fixed entirely on you. You didn’t even think, you stepped forward and threw your arms around him. The contact startled him. His body tensed, hands hovering in the air for a second before he finally, carefully, rested one large, calloused hand against your back.
“It’s okay” he murmured. “You’re safe now"
You could feel his voice rumbling through his chest, steady and grounding. The world stopped spinning for a moment.
When you finally pulled back, your hands lingered against his chestplate. You looked up at him, heart racing. “Y-You’re real!” you breathed. He blinked, tilting his head slightly. You laughed shakily, tears mixing with adrenaline. “That night in the alley… you warned me. You told me not to go forward”
Realization flickered in his eyes. A small smile formed beneath his mask.
“I see you kept your promise...”
You nodded. “I did. Though I almost broke it tonigh”
“Then I’m glad I got here in time” he said quietly. His gaze softened, a rare warmth shining through the warrior’s discipline. “You shouldn’t walk alone this late”
“I know,” you murmured. “But what can I say? My guardian angel’s been MIA lately.”
That earned you a short, surprised laugh, deep, low, smooth. “I’ve been… busy” he admitted. “But I never stopped watching”
You smiled, eyes glinting in the dim light. “Creepy, but I’ll take it”
That laugh again, softer this time. He looked at you a moment longer. “You’re shaking. Let me get you home safely.” You blinked. “Wh- But how?” you asked, still catching your breath. He crouched slightly, offering an arm.
“Do you trust me?”
You hesitated only a second before letting him lift you easily, one arm under your legs, the other bracing your back. You gasped at the effortless strength. And then, he jumped between one wall and another.
The ground fell away. The rush of air caught your hair. You clutched his shoulders as the city opened up beneath you, rooftops glowing, windows gleaming like stars. The night wind bit at your face but you couldn’t stop smiling. “This is insane!” you shouted over the wind.
“Breathe” he said, voice steady even mid-leap. “I won’t drop you.”
“I wasn’t worried!” you lied, gripping tighter. He chuckled softly, landing soundlessly on a nearby roof. The city stretched wide in every direction, skylines, bridges, cars like tiny veins of light. From here, it didn’t look ugly. It looked… alive.
“Wow…” you whispered. “You see this every night?”
“Every night” he said, and for a moment, his tone softened like he was seeing it new through your eyes.
He glanced down. “Which way?” You pointed weakly, still half entranced. “East side. Fourth building after the diner.” He nodded, and with another leap, you were flying again, each movement smooth,,powerful, silent as shadow.
Within minutes, you were at your building. Your balcony light was on, curtains shifting gently from an open door. Leonardo landed soundlessly at the edge. “You should lock that” he said, a faint hint of humor in his voice. You grinned, still a little dazed. “What can I say? I’m an optimist”
He set you down carefully on your balcony, his hands lingering just a second too long before he pulled back.
“You’re safe now” he said. “Try not to test your luck again, yeah?”
You looked up at him, eyes bright. “I’ll try. But in case I do…” You took a slow step closer, your voice soft but playful. “…Will you come to the rescue again?”
He smiled, really smiled this time. The kind that reached his eyes. “Always.”
You hesitated for a heartbeat, then raised your hand gently, resting your fingers against the side of his masked face.
His breath hitched almost imperceptibly.
“Thank you, Leo” you whispered.
And before he could respond, you leaned in and pressed a small, warm kiss to his cheek.
He froze.
Then blinked, slowly, like he couldn’t quite believe what had just happened. A faint, almost bashful smile spread across his face.
"Goodnight...” he murmured, voice lower now, softer. “Goodnight, my hero” you said, still smiling as you backed toward your open door.
He lingered just a moment longer, eyes never leaving you. Then, with one last look, he touched two fingers lightly to the spot where you’d kissed him, his expression soft and unreadable.
A beat later, he leapt backward off the balcony, vanishing into the night, the faint blue of his bandana catching the wind. You stood there for a long moment, hand on your chest, smiling into the empty dark.
“He’s real” you whispered. “And he saved me… again.”
Above, somewhere across the rooftoops, Leonardo ran silently to rejoin his brothers, his heart still steady but a little lighter than it had been in weeks.
And for the first time in a long while, the night didn’t feel lonely for either of you.
