a few doors down from me my neighbors have a squirrel bar nailed to the tree in front of the sidewalk, not exactly this but something like this:
it's been there for years and they never "stock" it so it's just sitting there. anyway, i thought it would be cute to make a little squirrel out of sculpey and leave it on one of the stools in the middle of the night. i also made a little sculpey beer bottle with its own label.

Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
I want you to understand this. I NEED you to understand this. My mother read me the hobbit as bedtime story, and I started pushing myself to read before pre-school so I could in fact read the hobbit for myself instead of having to wait for bedtime.
I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'
I read the Hobbit and Narnia as an 8-9 year old. They are absolutely children's books.
We need to stop thinking "children's book" = "picture book". That's not true.
A Series of Unfortunate Events is a children's book series.
Narnia is a children's book series.
The Hobbit is a children's book.
Watership Down is a children's book.
The Jungle Book is a children's book.
A Secret Garden is a children's book.
A Little Princess is a children's book.
Animorphs is a children's book series.
Hatchet is a children's book.
Bud, Not Buddy is a children's book.
The Day No Pigs Would Die is a children's book.
Charlotte's Web is a children's book.
Ramona Quimby, Age 8 is a children's book.
Alice in Wonderland is a children's book.
Out Of The Dust is a children's book.
Many of these books have won children's book awards for being such good children's books. None of them are picture books though. I have read all of these as a child. And a lot of these books contain death, because that is not inappropriate for children, it's part of life and children need to learn about it. These books contain stuff like abuse, racism, hunting, battle, survival, suffering, and other things I've heard some people say children should not be "exposed to". Reading about them in these books did not do me harm, in fact it did a lot of good because it taught me about those things and that they can be survived and are extant and there are words for them. Which is part of what books are supposed to do!
Any book written for children, pictures or no, is a children's book. Large thin picture books that rhyme are not the only thing that counts as a children's book. Those are picture books. The ones specifically designed for reading practise are traditionally called readers. Cat in the Hat is a reader, a picture book, AND a children's book. The Talking Eggs is a picture book and a children's book. There used to be readers that did not have pictures!
You need to read stuff that has death and upsetting things in it in order to understand those things exist and how people might cope with them. You cannot just go around saying that children should only read Dick and Jane. Have you MET a child, do you REMEMBER being a child??? Being a kid is often horrifying.
We do not tell stories about monsters to tell kids there's monsters in the world--they know that, they experience that every day. We tell them stories about monsters to show them kids like them and unlike them experience the monsters and survive, sometimes even defeat them.
If you were taught three-cueing you do not know how to read. I am sorry your adults so PROFOUNDLY failed you but guessing is not literacy. This is a series that helped me a lot as a kid.
Tumblr being the "piss on the poor" reading comprehension site makes sense when you realize that 79% of adults in the US are functionally illiterate. Same goes for Twitter and TikTok.

Every single fic update there is an author trying frantically to find the right balance between a nonchalant aside of "leave a comment if you enjoyed =)" and clinging desperately to the coat tails of a random stranger, dragging along behind them on the street wailing "Please, please! I have to know what you thought! I'm desperate to talk to people about this! Ask me about the alliterative repetition! Ask me about the symbolism!"

Sitting by a fire with you, it takes him a while to answer: “Why wouldn’t I?” It should’ve been obvious to you that a ranger – and one as kind and gentle-hearted as him! – would naturally see beauty in every creature, no matter its general reputation. To him, it’s not a question.

Boromir would shoot you a confused smile when you asked him your question. “What? Why would you turn into a worm…?” You’d blush and explain it to him, which would make him laugh in relief. “Why worry about such nonsense?” – “What, me turning into a worm?” – “No, silly! Me not loving you!” he’d say and pull you close for a kiss ♡ (He’d probably still worry about the sudden question because he cares for you that much haha!)

When you ask Frodo your question, it catches him off-guard. He’d look up from his book and ask you to repeat, even though he was already listening carefully. But the question has him double-checking! Your adorable explanation makes him laugh. He’d take your hands and say, “The things you think about! If you ever manage to turn yourself into a worm, you must turn me as well, so that we may live happy lives in our worm-house underground.”

Gandalf smokes his pipe when you ask him your question and smacks his lips as he contemplates the scenario. “A curious proposition…” For a moment, the furrow of his bushy eyebrows makes it look like he was about to scold you for your nonsense, but then he’d shoot you a playful smirk and assure you that yes, if you were to turn into a worm, he would still love you all the same.

You ask Gimli your question at a late-night banquet, making him pause and laugh. “I do not know if a worm would want to live in stone though! Wouldn’t you leave for grassier, muddier grounds? What would a worm want with a Dwarf?” Just like that, he has turned your question around! The ensuing nonsense conversation makes it certain: The two of you are inseparable ♡

Legolas is a very playful Elf and enjoys the games and riddles you two tend to play, so your question would not come entirely out of the blue for him. He would tilt his head and pout, pretending to consider it gravely. “A worm? A creature so foul and tiny and all too disagreeable?” – his face splits into a grin – “Why yes, of course!” Additionally, he’d incorporate “little worm” into his endless list of pet names for you.

Your question to Merry would probably come up during one of your philosophical conversations. But instead of stopping Merry dead in his tracks, he’d simply answer, “Yes, next question.” To him, it genuinely is not up for debate if changing your appearance would impact his feelings for you. When you dig deeper, he’d probably say something like, “I’d have to get used to it, but that’s it” and grin at you.

Let’s be honest: The question would probably come from Pippin in the first place. Maybe he had watched a worm or a toad travelling through a meadow nearby, or even overheard other Hobbits asking their partner about the dreaded scenario. He keeps wondering if he’d still be lovable as a worm but leaves no doubt should that fate befall you: This Hobbit loves you to the moon and back!

No contest: Sam Gamgee wins this one by a mile. When you ask him, no matter how unsurely, he’d cross his arms with a thoughtful sigh and start his answer by explaining how important worms are in the circle of nature to keep the ground and gardens alive. “And that’s just that, y’know? I don’t have to find ‘em beautiful, but I’d simply be lost without them. And if it was you, oh, y’know, there’d be no question about it. I’d tinker with a bit of wood to make you an indoor garden, so you have some dirt to crawl in even when we’re inside the house. Something I can carry around. And somethin’ to eat. Unless you don’t want to. I’d bring you the good dirt from Farmer Maggot, and some apples, too. Your favourite flowers must be there too, so that’s – hm? What’re smilin’ at me like that for? You asked the question…”

he’s always been considered the Weird Boy of the village, so it’s really not a surprise to anyone that he ended up falling in love with a whole ass HUMAN, it was almost sort of expected that he’d end up in an odd relationship and carry on the family reputation of being crazy
he likes to think he won you over with his intelligence and interesting, imaginative conversations, and his whimsy <3 since he was already somewhat educated about other races outside the Shire before you two met
but his first emotion wasn’t a crush, rather a bit of curiosity and the desire to get to know you in any capacity and just talk to you and spend time together
over time, his feelings develop when he realizes how much he enjoys talking to you about everything and how much you two are compatible in that regard; also he likes that you treat him as an equal, despite the obvious differences, and not like a curiosity
the second he starts getting closer with you, sleeping close to each other, practicing some swordfighting, staying close while walking, etc. – the teasing from his friends begins 😛 all in good fun of course
Frodo really values your opinions and advice, and when he finds someone trustworthy that means a lot to him – his affections grow
also he wishes he could be more useful when it comes to stepping in to protect you, but at least he can observe you with amazement – how skilled you are, and how easy on the eyes too!
your hugs are like heaven to him and he feels so safe and loved like that ❤

is only slightly wary of you at the start, but he uses those mildly negative feelings in order to bury the fact that he does feel rather flustered around you
the way he blushes when you look at him for more than 2 seconds is fairly obvious right away, God forbid if you smile at him or say something nice – his whole face, neck and ears are burning
one day he decides to be extremely brave and inquire whether you might help him brush up on his sword skills a little bit (if anyone asks, it’s because Strider was busy, mind you), and after he gets 1-on-1 time with you, he becomes aware of the massive crush he’s got on you
luckily, it’s quite easy to pick up on the way his eyes soften when he observes you or how he lets his hand linger just a little bit when he hands you something or brushes past you
but oh. could he even dare to dream that someone majestic such as you would return his affections in any capacity? 💔
you can probably guess that is his mindset, so you make it a point to tell him nice things and point out what is lovable about him – how he made such a lovely stew for dinner when you set up camp, or how his sparring skills are getting better; he all but stammers at your compliments but he’s afraid he is misreading your intentions still
unfortunately you have to take it upon yourself to get it through his stubborn head, no matter how many times his lil friends might have given him a pep talk and tried to push him to finally confess
when you manage to catch a moment alone, you surprise him with a kiss on the cheek and he firstly short-circuits but then rest assured – you get a barrage of kisses in return when he gets over the initial shock
really likes holding your hand a lot, also does his very best to assume the position of the big spoon while cuddling or sleeping
when you turn up in the Shire with him absolute chaos ensues because he’s a Good Boy who apparently got himself into an oh-so-scandalous relationship
but trust he will literally throw hands if needed if anyone makes you feel unwelcome
he looks at you with stars in his eyes for real!!

naturally curious person who likes a fun challenge BUT oh dear when the challenge is also attractive and tall???? boy is living his best life and nobody can tell him shit
medium obvious about his crush from the start, but he does like building up a bit of friendship first; and he’s talkative, fun and caring anyway, so it’s overall a nice time
but he has to fight the urge to grin like a fool whenever he catches your eyes lingering on him
he makes it his secret mission to get more of your attention than anyone else but without being overbearing
he will sweet-talk you and compliment you loads tho. if you do it back, he will think he’s playing it cool, but actually gets flustered
“you’re soooo tall and strong” 😛 he loves it but also wishes he could protect you better from danger
when he tells you stories from back home, definitely exaggerates his bravery or intelligence, of which you are aware and it makes you laugh; however, when you laugh it’s even better, actually. the way your eyes gleam makes him daydream of forever, but then he wonders whether he could ever be adequate for you.
but you fluster him on purpose, listen to his rambling and ramble right back, spar with him and always always overtake him (to his absolute delight – he’s competitive but having you peering down at him beats any other feeling) and he is down bad – so what’s a little height difference? he’ll be damned if he doesn’t at least give it a try
so he starts testing the waters by giving you affectionate nicknames and “accidentally” brushing hands; when you do it back without missing a beat, he hopes it’s not just a game to you because it stopped being a game to him long ago
he will literally try to lift you up and act all strong
the confession or a kiss happens as a part of some game or a dare as you sit around the fire at night – it gives you an easy way out if needed, too, but you don’t back away, and he promises himself he will do anything to be man enough for you
when you get together, he most definitely likes to show you off a bit and he’s very proud, almost honored that you chose him

although he was dead convinced he had no chance with you in the romantic sense, that wasn’t going to stop him from being his chatty, affectionate, sweet self towards you all the time
he thought he made peace with the fact you will never fall in actual love with him, but there was just a bit of sadness in his heart because he found you so very amazing
he climbs things to be closer to your height, and definitely trips or falls a couple times – if it makes you laugh, it’s worth the minor trouble! but you assure him that he really doesn’t need to do that, he’s just fine the way he is
if you pay him a compliment, he will in all seriousness stop functioning for a few moments (how fun it is to shut up a chatty person by making them blush!!)
steals your cloak even though it’s literally dragging behind him as he walks, and it’s collecting leaves along the hem — but but but it smells like you (he will not outwardly say that) and it’s so warm!
when you are on night watch, he will sometimes go so far to sacrifice sleep just to have the chance of hogging all of your attention
he asks lots of questions, about humans as well, and he revels in how you answer every single one, without brushing him off
and now you got him thinking he’s important to you too – the other three will literally have to convince him that you do like him back and that he’s not just imagining it with an idealistic view
he loves that he feels so very safe and protected around you, like you have the power to block out all the bad in the world
as you walk, he will pick up a nice leaf or rock or flower and hand it to you as a small token of affection; if you show him appreciation through a hug or petting his hair or even a small kiss, his heart triples in size
the confession happens after you all just barely defeat a pack of orcs and he realizes that there is a million things scarier than revealing his feelings and that he can’t have something happening to you without you knowing that he cares about you, even if it’s not reciprocated
but his whole world shifts when it IS!

another outrageous hobbit at whom nobody even blinked an eye when he marched back home with a lover almost twice his height; if nothing, it gives all the neighbors extra fuel for sensational rumors as they have their afternoon tea
initially he was only slightly suspicious, but there was just something about you that drew him in and piqued his curiosity
you complain to each other during the quest and it bonds you in a way 😂
you treat him as an equal even though he’s well aware that he isn’t, in the physical sense, but it’s lovely regardless
will climb up on a rock or some tree roots to get closer to your height; naturally, you poke a bit of fun at him for it, he will roll his eyes with an undeniable smile
when he has to take a shift for night watch, you offer to keep him company sometimes which he really appreciates and it’s your steadfastness and stability that wins his heart – something about you feels like home away from home
he’s not actively trying to win your heart all the time, but he also kind of is, depending on whether he allows himself to be way over in his head, on a given day, about if you might actually want something real and longlasting
he tells you stories about his home and he cautiously peppers in comments such as “i will have to show you…” and when you, of course, enthusiastically agree, everything seems suddenly possible
once you fell asleep subconsciously curled against him and his entire heart went: !!!!!!
it was a huge victory for him, that you – tall, strong, impressive, felt safe enough with lil old him to just relax completely. his confidence grows
from thereon, he will have no problem stepping in to protect you in a battle, as scared as he might be
his confession is, to his absolute mortification, a little unskillful, quite accidental, but incredibly sweet just as well! it comes out unplanned during a random conversation after a long day of travelling, but you are charmed by the honesty nevertheless, and very much reciprocate it!

✧ Aragorn doesn't reveal himself immediately and just watches you for a little while, a smile on his face.
✧ It's actually you that notices him, leaning against the wall.
✧ Following his gaze you realise he's staring at the shirt you've taken, and you awkwardly laugh before asking if he needs it back.
✧ He is very quick to reassure you that there's no need.
✧ Then he comes up to join you, holding you in a hug before giving you a kiss.
✧ When his hands wander a little it's actually not to your hair, but instead tracing around the fabric to see where it falls on you.
✧ Won't say this out loud - but also finds it sweet to see them not quite fitting your form.
✧ When he first gets to Minas Tirith he keeps expecting to find you in one of his nicer outfits, but instead you keep going back to the ranger ones.
✧ Doesn't ask why - but eventually you approach with a handful of nicer shirts and ask him to wear them more so they'll still feel like him when you put them on.
✧ He is very happy to oblige.
𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐬
✧ Stares at the shirt for a moment, then back to you, then back to the shirt.
✧ "You... you are aware that's my shirt, melleth?"
✧ "I am." You look up at him with a smile, and Legolas realises that he must be missing something.
✧ A light blush settles on his face as he comes up to you, "May I ask why you have chosen to steal my clothes?"
✧ "Do you want them back?"
✧ The blush becomes darker, before Legolas looks at you again.
✧ Words don't seem to come to him for a moment, and he simply stands there as if trying to convey something to you through only a confused but admiring look.
✧ "No. At least not right now."
✧ And then his arms close around you, hugging you tightly.
✧ Legolas doesn't fully understand why he enjoys seeing you wear his clothes so much, or why it feels so intimate and loving to him, but he also doesn't complain.
✧ There's still a small look of fascination on his face each time he sees you doing it, no matter how many times you've stolen his clothes.
𝐆𝐢𝐦𝐥𝐢
✧ "And what do we have here, hm?"
✧ As flustered as Gimli gets by it, he still speaks up about it quickly and smiles when you turn around.
✧ (He can admire you better when you're facing him as well.)
✧ Most of his blush and admiration of you comes out as a series of compliments more than anything else, and although they're rushed you can tell they're genuine.
✧ Sneaks glances to you throughout the rest of the day as well.
𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐫
✧ The first person in the Fellowship to be less flustered by it and more admiring of it.
✧ You see him stop in the entrance of the room, eyes sweeping over you as he looks at the fabric on you.
✧ Where it seems to hang more loosely, the bits it's a little tighter on.
✧ Only becomes sheepish when you make eye-contact and he realises he's been caught staring.
✧ "You look lovely."
✧ The praise is sincere, but you still laugh a little. "You tell me that with anything I wear."
✧ Boromir has crossed the gap between you two, leaning forward to give you a gentle kiss on the forehead.
✧ "You look especially lovely."
✧ Is definitely proud of the fact you feel comfortable enough to wear his clothes.
✧ Not just because it means you like him enough to steal something of his - to want him near you - but also because you can feel safe around his things.
✧ He won't admit this part out loud, but there's a small part of him that sees it as his way of protecting you and being there for you even when he's not in the room.
𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧
✧ As he greets you with a hug, Pippin doesn't even recognise the fabric at first.
✧ Then, as his arms wrap around you, he realises how familiar it feels.
✧ You can't help laughing a little as he steps back, eyes looking you up and down with a state of shock.
✧ And, as he realises you've stolen his shirt, a grin.
✧ Gaze going to the shirt, he simply says, "You have very good taste, love."
✧ As you laugh for the second time it's with him, and soon his laughter joins you as well.

✧ His gaze stays at the kitchen table, before eventually it flickers back up to you.
✧ "Is that?" Merry sounds a mixture of disbelief and fluster, "Are those my clothes?"
✧ "They are." You think about leaving it there, before deciding to be a little teasing. "Do they look nice on me?"
✧ "Very." Merry says it without even needing to think, and both of you can feel your faces heating slightly.
✧ A moment of silence settles before he speaks again, this time managing to spin his words into something more coherent.
✧ Into a beautiful and no less sincere praise about the fact he truly thinks you look wonderful in them.
✧ And that, if you ever felt like doing it again, he... probably wouldn't be opposed to it.
✧ Keeps sneaking glances at you throughout the day, and whenever he joins you in a kiss his hand will trace along the fabric as if to confirm it's still real.
✧ A tangible manifestation of your love.

✧ Samwise is certainly the most flustered of all the Fellowship.
✧ Something in his mind just can't connect the two things that he's seeing.
✧ You - beautiful, amazing, wonderful you - wandering around the house in some of his clothing.
✧ Not even his finer outfits for better occasions, but just a shirt he would wear around Hobbiton.
✧ It's a silly thought, to think that fabric isn't deserving of you, but in his mind it truly isn't.
✧ He just can't begin to fathom why you would choose his clothes out of all the things available.
✧ Seeing him staring in confusion, even with the light blush on his face, you reassure him and tell him why you're wearing the clothes. To feel close to him even when he's not right there.
✧ "Oh."
✧ Even more blush comes onto his face at that, and he takes you into a hug - a brief kiss being placed on your cheek.
✧ "Well, if you ever want to spend time with me you can just ask me. You don't- you don't need to steal something of mine."
✧ His eyes soften a little, but he can't quite look you in the eye as he gives his next bit of praise.
✧ "Even if you do somehow make them look beautiful."

✧ Actually, Frodo has ended up wearing your clothes a few times around the house before you end up wearing his.
✧ In his mind he had never really understood why you'd stopped for a moment when he'd first walked out. Why you'd seemed to be flustered.
✧ Yes, he was wearing them to be reminded of you. But was it truly so romantic?
✧ As he sees you wearing his clothes he realises the answer is yes.
✧ He realises how much his heart enjoys seeing you like this - seeing an manifestation of how you love him and want to keep him close.
✧ Frodo stands in silence at the edge of the room, and instead of saying anything you only smile at him.
✧ Coming to join you after a moment, he lets himself relax into your arms and tries not to think about the clothing as he kisses you.
✧ "You... you look beautiful, my love."
✧ Doesn't really draw attention to it throughout the rest of the day, although you can see him glancing at it occasionally.
✧ It's not an intrusive gaze, or one that lingers too long on your body, but one that sees you.
✧ One that just wants to feel the love that this action shows.
