sorry to post about homophobia in football in between the spotify wrapped but a thing that’s so clear to me now if that you can bring your politics into football if it’s conservative politics but you can’t if it’s left leaning. like it’s fine for pulisic to hit the trump dance, but it’s not okay for mazraoui to post something in solidarity for palestine. it’s okay for mazraoui, guehi, morsy, etc to use their religious beliefs to showcase their homophobia, but it’s not okay for sam kerr and kristie mewis to post their baby announcement. it’s okay for clubs across the board to increase their ticket prices and price people out of watching the team, but it’s not okay for marcus rashford to use his wealth to feed local kids. it’s okay for players to post their support for their rapist teammates, but showing any kind of solidarity with their women colleagues who were mistreated by their federations would be controversial. just a very nasty sport

Palestinian Wasim Abu Sal and Sweden's Nebil Ibrahim at the end of round of 32 men’s boxing preliminaries.

Abu sal entered, with chants of "Free Palestine” breaking out loudly.

"I promise you I will continue training in the coming four years till 2028, which I hope is the year I get a medal. I came here to grab a medal but that is sport and God willing, I will fight again. In four year’s time, I will raise the Palestinian flag over the podium,” Abu Sal said.

Ibrahim said “I tried to turn it around. It’s an honour for me to be the one to fight the first Palestinian boxer to enter at the Olympics. He’s not only representing his people and his country. He’s representing every oppressed nation in the world. Right now, Palestine is in the face of oppression so he has a big burden on his shoulders.”

Abu Sal was one of two flag-bearers for the Palestinian delegation.

His white shirt had embroidered images of warplanes dropping missiles over children playing sport.

"This shirt represents the current picture in Palestine," Abu Sal told AFP on Saturday. "The children who are martyred and die under the rubble, children whose parents are martyred and are left alone without food or water."

Abu Sal lives in the West Bank and was unable to train with his Cairo-based coach. A Gazan who cannot travel to him due to Israeli restrictions.

Here’s my two cents about this that no one asked for:

It is impossible to have extensive, systemic issues revolving around cheating within Canada Soccer and the players be completely innocent. Even if unknowingly, the Canadian players have intrinsically benefitted from this.

I can sympathize with the Canadian players, but not more than every other team they’ve played in the last 5+ years, men’s and women’s. Just because a team is likable does not mean they’re incapable of doing bad things.

I’ve seen people saying “imagine all you’ve worked for being taken away because of the coaches doing this” and I would counter with “imagine losing your chance at a gold medal because the team that beat you cheated”? If I’m Sweden, I’m filing a complaint and asking for an additional investigation immediately.

And I ask, because again I think the Canadian players are being unfairly coddled in this situation, do you think that if it was the Americans who got caught that anyone would have this level of sympathy for those players?

okay first of all yes obviously there is something rotten on all levels of the federation, and most guilty are the coaches and reps who enacted it. however, the players are not innocent victims, that would be their opposing teams, in particular the ferns. the players say they did not know (i dont necessarily believe it( but regardless, they were still the benefactors of cheating. again, THEY ARE NOT VICTIMS.
