So, black Magneto. It may be a thing in the MCU. And I’m going to weigh in right now. I am of Jewish descent. My ancestors were lucky enough to flee Poland before the Reich. Or I probably would not be here. I have been to Auschwitz. I have stood by the pool that was the crematorium at Birkenau. I am the first to say “Never again.” Which means I “should” be upset by this. Guess what? I’m not upset. I’m not insulted. And I am not upset or insulted for three reasons, one of which is VERY IMPORTANT. Yes, I’m using caps. Reason #1, the very important one: The creation of a new Magneto does not erase the existence of the old one. If I want to go back and watch Ian McKellen’s incredible performance, I can. There are decades of X-Men comics. It’s just the same as the argument that Miles Morales takes away Peter Parker stories. And it’s something we all need to remember. Remakes and reboots and reimaginings do not make the original version go away. Reason #2: Believe it or not, Magneto has been played by a black man before! Specifically, by Christopher Judge, who voiced Magneto in the X-Men: Evolution cartoon series in the early 200s. (For those who don’t know, he’s Teal'c from Stargate, and I now want Farpoint to get him as a guest one of these years). Reason #3: The MCU’s particular level of realism would make Magneto’s original background as a Holocaust survivor…jarring. They would have to explain why he hasn’t aged, they would have to do something convoluted and complicated. So, if this goes ahead, I see several wonderful possibilities, but the two that jump to mind: 1. He’s still Jewish! Black Jews exist. And they are overlooked, they get NOTHING in the way of representation. People forget they do exist. If Washington is actually the actor chosen, then perhaps he is an African-American man with a Jewish mother, having to deal with racism and anti-Semitism and the peculiarities of heritage that could come with it. 2. I would be very interested in a Magneto who’s middle name was Mohammed not Magnus, if you get my drift. The current flow of Islamophobia in our society is essentially anti-Semitism aimed at a different group. A Muslim Magneto would bring those threads together. Now, this is all at the rumor stage anyway, although it seems to be a “converging” rumor…first I heard that there might be a black Magneto, now there’s an actual name. But no. I am not insulted. I am not upset. I am eager to see where they go with this.

The Official “Log Off” Protest F.A.Q! 

The “Log Off” protest is in response to the recent NSFW ban announced by Tumblr. The ban flags all content the filtering system detects as NSFW, reducing visibility to the community. The system has proven time and time again that is inefficient, oftentimes flagging SFW material as NSFW. 

This SFW material includes art, memes and so on. This ban directly hurts the community and will not solve the actual problems at hand due to the poor flagging system. Because of this, the entire community will suffer.  

So to respond, I propose that every user on Tumblr logs off of Tumblr for 24 hours on December 17th at 12 am EST.
