I was like 15-16? and realized that I was the age where it was common to start dating. I was curious about the hype and didn’t want to to an outlier so I decided to get myself a boyfriend. I asked a random boy, who was above average in height and looks, for his number. After that I got straight to the point and asked him out.

Our first date was at a movie theater, because I believed that was a common first date. Our second date we went mini golfing, I kissed him on the cheek because I decided he was to timid to initiate it and I had to fulfill the normal second date requirements. Our third date was at the zoo, pro-protocol, I kissed him. This was because out of the many people I interviewed, the 3rd date was commonly decided to be the “kissing date”

We continued to date some more after that. On our 6th date, he tried to say “I love you”-I cut him off by saying “nope” as it was far to early for that according to general consensus. (Also I didn’t feel comfortable saying that to him). After I had decided that I fulfilled the healthy teenage milestone, I broke up with him. Overall I was satisfied and didn’t want to go further until I was older. I told him the basic, “it’s not you, it’s me” and paid for his food and left. I was super happy afterwards, as I now had more free-time.

My parents still refer to these events as my “experiment”. I refer to it as, “that time I decided I needed a boyfriend”

I think 2016-style "Men's rights activist" misogyny really did a number on our ability to talk about gender online in ways that we have yet to fully unpack.

At this point everyone is so jaded from dealing with those trolls that any time a men's issue of any kind is brought up the kneejerk reaction is "ugh, this again! Reverse sexism doesn't exist!" even if nobody said anything about "reverse sexism."

That's how we got into a situation where a statement like "trans men and tranmascs face specific struggles and prejudices. Maybe we should have a word for that so we can talk about how it affects us" sets off the MRA Troll Alarm and gets everyone on the defensive.

Oh, hey, an opening to talk about my second most controversial opinion, that men do in fact suffer from gendered issues and that the shitty terrible men's rights movement shouldn't be allowed to erase that.

Time for anecdote: back in the dinosaurs roamed the earth years, I (a cis woman because it matters here) was on a forum and ended up starting a thread for men to talk about issues that affected men, because some men had said they wouldn't feel comfortable starting a thread like that. A lot of men jumped in and started talking and it was--eye-opening.

They talked about the way they had to perform their gender roles around other men, because they'd get endlessly mocked if they ordered a slightly girly drink. They talked about how they had to perform their gender roles around women, because anecdata had taught them that even if a woman said it was all right for a man to be emotional, she'd change the way she treated him if he cried in front of her. They talked about concern and confusion about their sexualities and the way it was often framed as predatory. They talked about how hard it was for them to make close friends or show emotions, how they had to police their own fashion, how platonic love wasn't ever seen as an option for them.

There were guys in there who said things I disagreed with and guys in there who painted women with a broad enough brush that it made me defensive and I don't remember all the details, but it was genuinely humbling to listen to these dudes talk about their experiences as men, what being men meant to them and how hard it was sometimes to be a man.

All that story to say, I think men (in the very broadest sense of the term) should be able to talk about the gendered issues they experience! And, as a treat, I think they should be able to talk about those experiences without having to 'acknowledge their privilege' or act as though they are lucky to be allowed space for their concerns. They shouldn't have to reveal whether or not they're cis either!

And when men have a concern, they shouldn't need to couch it in terms of trans men or their own transness to be able to talk about it. They shouldn't have to talk about their race or their sexuality or their health to be heard, as if we're all playing marginalization bingo and the person with the highest score gets to have their issues acknowledged as real. People should be able to say 'I'm a man and this is an issue/concern/experience I have specifically because of that' end statement no qualifiers needed and people should be able to acknowledge that as a real issue.

I see so many posts that are like 'some of you need to remember that when you're talking about men you're also talking about trans men' and I think we, the collective we, should maybe instead say 'the way some of y'all talk about men is messed up.'

because otherwise I swear people end up making posts with the thought process: 'well if I just remember to exclude trans men, in a way that /totally/ makes it sound like I think they're still men, just not, you know, the /bad/ kind, I can be really shitty towards a group of people! Hurray!'. There are people out there who really want to learn the rules of harassment like a D&D rules lawyer, trying to find the group of people they're allowed to fat-shame or mock or just plain hate.

I don't have a good ending for this, it's just a long, somewhat connected rant. If you're a man reading this, the issues you experience due to your gender are not trivial and deserve to be acknowledged and addressed.

That aside.

I’m only going to talk about food items but if your food bank takes personal items, a lot of times diapers, feminine hygiene products, etc, are very very welcome.

1) Canned chicken and beef

looooooove this stuff. It’s expensive, it lasts forever, it tastes good and it can be used a variety of ways. This stuff is fucking catnip to food banks, it’s so hard for us to provide proteins.

2) Fancy nut butters

Peanut butter is a standby for food banks as a shelf-stable inexpensive protein, but if we have a family with a kid with a peanut allergy that’s not going to work. Non-peanut butters are expensive and it’s something we hardly ever see donated. (we also like peanut butter, but that’s easier for us to buy ourselves than non-peanut butters)

3) Canned or packaged tuna

You may notice a trend here in shelf-stable proteins. And yeah. That’s basically it, so I’m not going to keep harping on it. But this stuff is a godsend.

4) Easy breakfast things for kids (Granola bars, instant oatmeal, and the like)

Whatever Donald Trump tells you, most people who get food from food banks are actually working their asses off and so they have to leave Obama to raise their baby or whatever, and they don’t have a lot of time in the morning. Things like this that kids can make for themselves are expensive. (Another trend you may be noticing–donate shit that costs a lot of money. That helps us more than all the shitty green bean cans in the world) But they are so helpful for busy working families where the parents may not have a set schedule and sometimes little Amanda is making her own breakfast before she runs off to school. Don’t let kids go to school hungry.

5) Shelf-stable juice

This is one people never think of! But if you show up with a bunch of (preferably reduced sugar stuff) bottles of juice at my door, oh man, you are gonna get so many check mark and okay hand emoticons. This stuff is great for kids, and it doesn’t require refrigeration until it’s opened, so it works great for food drives.

Also, please consider setting this as a scheduled post for June/July. A lot of food insecure families with children rely on school lunch to make ends meet, and that’s obviously not an option during summer vacation. Lots of people give during November and December, but summer is a lean time for food banks. Which is a shame, cuz fresh produce is at a boom during that time of year, so not only would summer donations boost how many people the food banks can help, it would boost the quality of the help they provide.

It’s so weird talking to people who’s view of “here’s the way life is for everyone” is shattered as soon as they talk to someone with disabilities (physical, mental illness, any). Like you’ll say you’ll have a problem and instead of helping you they’ll argue with you about how you’re not actually facing that problem. Like,

Me: Hey, I’m really struggling to find a job and a part of it is my resume. I was depressed & psychotic during highschool so I didn’t do anything to gain skills or achievements to put on my resume. I also don’t have anyone to put as a reference. What can I do?

Them: You can add your skills, hobbies, clubs you’re in, and different volunteer work you’ve done! You can also get your teacher as a reference.

Me: I already know what to put on a resume, my issue is that I don’t have things that I can use. Also, I’m in my mid 20s so I don’t know if I can put my highschool teacher as a reference.

Them: Well if you’re a part of a church or an activity group, you could add that. Also, think of any projects you’ve worked on in the past.

Me: I already know you can put these things on a resume. I’m not looking for suggests of things I’ve already done, I’m looking for what I can do now if I haven’t done anything.

Them: There’s no way you didn’t do anything during highschool?? What about some odd jobs you definitely did for extra money, like babysitting or mowing the lawn?

Me: I spent all of highschool either in modified classes or in bed doing nothing - not even hobbies, what about that do you not understand?

And then you talk to someone who’s also disabled and they’re like “Here’s a bunch of jobs you can do from home that don’t pay much but look good on a resume, here’s some free online courses that also look good on a resume, here’s how you can be making small amounts of money in the meantime, here’s some things you can put besides a professional reference, and here are your rights if your future employer tries to take advantage of your disability - which you probably shouldn’t tell them about unless you need accommodations.”

And suddenly my will to continue trying returns!

Freelance Jobs You Do From Home That Look Cool On A Future Resume

Please research any company before sign up with then. So many companies are scams and pay you way less than you deserve for your work. Go to r/freelancers and search to make sure nobody has had some horrid experiences. There’s also usually reviews of a company on YouTube as well.

Transcribing - adding subtitles to videos for deaf and other hard of hearing people. You usually read a big instruction manual, do two or three tests to see how well you can follow the instruction manual, and then get an e-mail if you can work with them or not. Depending on where you sign up, you can also fill out which topics you’re knowledable on and less likely to make mistakes on when transcribing.

Translating - same as transcribing, but now you’re translating one language into another. I have not done this before, so I’d suggest talking to people who have.

Article Writing - there are different websites you can sign up to work for where someone sends in a request for an article about a certain topic, you can write that article, and if they like it they can purchase it from you. Some websites have a ranking system where the more good reviews your article gets, the more money you’ll get paid.

Article Editing - you can also get payed to fix typos and reorganize an article (or list) if writing isn’t your thing.

Top 10 Lists - There are different sites that will pay you to write 10 ten lists. They usually require a specific amount of words and have an author’s guide on their site.

Graphic Designer - if you go to different generic freelance websites, you can often find people who are searching for someone to design logos for their company or banners for their websites. It helps if you have a portfolio as well.

Virtual Assistent - scheduling appointments, answering calls, and managing email accounts from your own home. I haven’t done this one so again, do more research.

Small Amounts Of Money

Qmee - I’ve been using this app for awhile called qmee where you do surveys for money. Surveys usually pay anywhere in between 30 cents and 2 dollars, and they have a feature where if the survey asks you anything sketchy then you can report them. You can also cash out whenever, like you don’t have to build up a certain amount. (If you aren’t American, you may only get a couple surveys per day.) An extra 20 dollars a month isn’t much but it’s nice.

Fiverr - A website where you state your talents and you can take on other people’s smaller projects for small amounts of money. A funny example is this YouTube skit where someone paid some people on fiverr to come up with a break-up letter. I believe you can also keep a portfolio for any projects you make during your freelance jobs on fiverr too.

Redbubble - this is where you can put different designs onto different types of clothing, notebooks, mugs, hats, etc. It helps if you have a design that’s from a fandom, references a meme, or fufills a niche. You can also go to TeeSpring if you want to put multiple designs on one item, but you’d have to promote your items yourself as TeeSpring has this issue where you can’t search for new stores who aren’t already popular.

Test Products - once again, please research any company you’re going to do this for. There are companies that will send you products for a week or two and ask for a report on how well it works, what you like/dislike, etc.

If You Don’t Have Anyone To Put On Your Resume As References

Volunteer Somewhere - animal shelters, tutoring, soup kitchens, summer programs, public libraries, etc. If you’re able to volunteer somewhere, you can ask the people there if you can use them as a reference.

Volunteer Online - you can also do online volunteer work if you’re unable to do physical volunteer work. Here’s a list of examples of online volunteer work which includes things like creating a large amount of thank-you cards, transcribing books into digital form, or answer texts or calls on a crisis line. This may be a better option due to covid.

Add Personal References - friends and family members do work (just don’t list them as professional references). It’s especially helpful if you’ve done a project for/with them as well.

Or don’t add references at all - references look good on a resume, but unless you’re writing a federal resume you kind of don’t need them? If someone is interested in hiring you, they may ask if you have any references. You can just say “no, this is my first job” (if it is). They might ask why you haven’t worked before, but you can just say that it’s personal or private information. Or you can give a vague answer like dealing with family matters.

Once you have some, this is how you would format your references.

None of these are long term solutions and not everything will work out for everybody. These are just helpful suggestions I’ve received over the years!

There’s also a whole bunch of YouTube tutorials for learning Excel. And, if you’ve a mind to learn it, there’s a mapping software called QGIS that’s free to download, and the internet is full of tutorials. If you can learn it, it is an EXTREMELY sought-after skill in a lot of fields.
