An author I follow on IG posted about her older books getting new covers and having the opportunity of going through them and edit them to make the referencers more “modern” like group chats instead of group texts and I have seen other people mention about older books getting updates like this (was it pretty little liars and the deal changing the name of tv shows to more recents ones?) and I have to say I absolutely hate this.

I hate that they are trying to modernize older books with things that are going to be outdated in a couple of years. I hate that authors can go and take out the age of their characters after a decade (looking at you six of crows). I hate that authors do this and don’t tell their fans they are doing this.

Leave the books how they were written, add disclaimers at the start if you want but don’t touch the actual text. A book is a result of the time period it was written, adding stuff like scrolling through TikTok in a book that was published way before social media existed doesn’t make sense and I hate it.

Yesterday I had a large cold brew and it gave me both the Shakes and the Audacity to edit out at least a hundred words of "Plastic Fangs". No small feat, considering I typically only edit out a fistful of words per pass-through. Fingers crossed I can squeeze out more of that Editing Juice without having to overcaffeinate to shakiness today! 🤞🏻

Pax you are an absolute Angel as always. Thank you for enabling me.

So "Plastic Fangs" is about Marcellus, who is a vampire and also a theatre kid. (Same difference, really.) He's an absolute freak. Loves stealing and reading peoples' diaries, loves making out with strangers in the woods, loves spending all of October dressing as a vampire and thinking he's Oh So Funny for it. Dude's almost seventy but since he was turned at nineteen, he's going to look Super Young for forever.

It takes place in the early 80s because I can't write things in the twenty-first century.

It's also about Abel, who is just as much of a freak as Marcellus. He's a punk who loves being in the mosh pit. He likes scaring children. He got kicked out of Catholic school for being suspected of Satanism. Your average sort of edgy, queer punk guy without a lot of lived experiences.

I just. I love them both so much. They're so Weird. They're outsiders of the world they live in and they find each other under strange circumstances and just cling to each other. I'm writing an entire novel about their dynamic because the short story gave me a taste of their strangeness and I couldn't stop thinking about it. 10/10 Little Guys. I adore them.

Today we have some writerly questions. Please help yourself to one of the iced drinks on offer and relax under colourful umbrellas on the Tavern Patio! Each drink comes with a tag tied around it. Each tag has a question. Which drink(s) do you choose?

🧊Iced Raspberry Tea (Raspberry and blueberry leaves with rosehips, hibiscus, roasted chicory and hints of orange. Served in glass cup): What character have you created for Plot Reasons and then ended up falling in love with?
