I wish you could feel it like I do. For soon it will be gone, and with it the part of me that knew its warmth as well. I shall miss it.
Oh my gods, Adar-stans, I’ve just had a brainwave and I need to tell you all about it. (Long post is long, soz.)
Right, so, this scene really bothered me the first time I saw it. Adar has clearly demonstrated that he cares about the Uruks, and that he wants to spare them suffering when he can. So why does he make one of them hold out his arm and show him what the sunlight does to him? Why does he wait so long, leaving the other Uruk’s skin burning right in front of him, before he finally reaches out and covers his arm back up for him?
At first, I thought the writers did it to show just how profoundly loyal the Uruks are to their Lord-Father. This Uruk’s skin is burning like it’s on fire, but Adar said “Show me your arm,” so he isn’t moving until Adar says he can. I still think, from a narrative perspective, that is one of the things this scene accomplishes. But if that was the only thing the scene was meant to achieve, the writers could’ve had Adar realise this Uruk wasn’t going to move, and then immediately respond. It still would have demonstrated the Uruks’ fierce loyalty (to a disturbing degree), without undercutting the audience’s belief that Adar genuinely cares.
So, having sat here staring at these gifs for a while now, I think there’s something going on in this scene that I didn’t fully grasp at first.
absolutely love these words about the significance of the light but there is one thing I have trouble reconciling or wrapping my head around; one the one hand he gets comfort from the sunlight “accepting” him but on the other the same light “rejects” the (other) uruks … something given his words about their “heart” and worthiness of having a place in the world Adar does not quite agree with; Why would he “care” about the sun´s judgement on him, if he rejects it in another place? I kind of feel like it would at least sour the solace, if the same thing that confirms his personhood denies it to beings Adar very much considers having that kind of worth
(But that whole scene and especially the question of why is he exposing the arm to the sun is giving me soooo many brainworms and they still go on; one worm is also the thing about him probably having seen this kind of blistering before, probably often, the uruks will have been exposed to the sun for one reason or another; perhaps it´s just not that “big” of a deal (”this but a scratch”/had worse” vibes) and after all e.g. uruks are also sent into battle as cannon fodder with the Southlanders but of course that could count under “necessary”, while the arm thing was technically totally avoidable ..)
Ah yeah, that’s a totally fair point! Personally, I think that relates to why Adar is finally able to let it go—because it’s something he can have, but that’s denied to all the other Uruks. Adar can claim an identity as both an Elf and a Uruk; and in his conversation with Galadriel, he does (i.e., “We prefer ‘Uruk’.” / “It would seem I’m not the only Elf alive who’s been transformed by darkness.”). My read on that seen in the sunlight is that he elects to renounce those things that make him different from his children, and fully/exclusively embrace his identity as an Uruk. The rest of the Uruks have no choice in the matter, but he does. And making that choice means letting go of any residual hope that he could go back to who he was before he was taken and made into one of the Moriondor.
Re the matter of the sun... I may have chosen my words poorly. I don’t mean to imply that the sun (as an extension of the will of Eru) “accepts” or “rejects”; what the light does to him vs to the other Uruks isn’t a judgment, I don’t think. I meant more that...it reminds him of his origins, I guess? The sun is a physical expression of the Light of the One, the Secret Fire, which is really a spiritual/metaphysical reality. In the same way that some people in our own world read deeper, symbolic significance into natural phenomena like rainbows or shooting stars, I think the sensory experience of sunlight means something deeper to Adar. It acts like a signpost, pointing the way to the truth that he is a Child of Ilúvatar, and he derives some comfort from reminding himself of that truth.
But yes, that tangible reminder that’s available to him is not available to any of his children: not because Eru has judged them or forsaken them (Adar hopes—as do I); but because of what Morgoth and Sauron have done to them, taken from them. The Uruks have been denied a part of their birthright as Children of Ilúvatar; so, out of love for them, Adar has chosen to relinquish it as well.
(I think. Always keen to know other folks’ thoughts!)
Writing a Blind or Visually Impaired Character
A Multi-Step Guide Written by a Visually Impaired Writer and Blogger
I’m hoping this blog will over time develop its own following, and when it does people will inevitably see my bio and notice what I included: I’m visually impaired.
Yes, a visually impaired writer, and I’ve written with two blind characters before so I have some practice in the field.
So, inevitably, someone is going to ask how to write a blind character.
Or, at least, I hope you’ll ask someone who’s actually blind or visually impaired about writing a blind character before you get too involved with your new WIP.
All parts will be tagged #blindcharacter in my blog, and I will add links to every post as I finish each part. Follow my blog for more writing advice.
Note, this post updates fairly often and old versions are still floating around out there. The most current version of this post is pinned to my blog with any new guides or links you might of missed.
As of 29 June 2022, this is the most extensive and screen reader friendly version of this post.
Part One: Crafting the Blind Character
In which I tell you how to begin making a blind character who is more than a cardboard cutout
Part Two: Narrative Choice, Visual Description, Verbal Description, Social Interaction
In which I give you a basic rundown on how to write from the perspective of a character who can’t see and still make the narration descriptive
Part Three: Tropes and Clichés to Avoid
Your blind readers will thank you for not being the 5000th person to do this and manage to actually finish your story. (Do you have any idea how many stories I’ve noped out of within two chapters because of these clichés? A Lot.)
Part Four: Canes, Guide Dogs, and O&M
Everything I can tell you about 1) how to learn how to use a cane 2) how a cane works 3) how to describe what your character experiences with their cane 4) everything I know on guide dogs

Part Five: Small Aspects of being Blind You Never Thought Of
5 January 2021 Edit: This link has been fixed to correspond with the correct post
Or, really, very normal everyday things for blind people, the inclusion of which will make your characters more real and authentic. It’s the tiny details.
Part Six: Should You Cure Your Character’s Blindness? (Short Answer: No)
There’s no way to write a cure for your blind character that doesn’t make blind readers hate you. Sorry. We came here to finally experience a relatable character who experiences the world like us, but none of us are getting cured so seeing this character we learned to love become something alien from us in the end feels like a slap in the face

Writing Blind Characters Falling in Love, an Advice Post:
Someone asked what being blind and falling in love have to do with each other. Honestly, blindness changes your perspective on everything and it makes an impact on every relationship you have. This includes some things that you definitely do not want your character’s love interest to be/do.
Writing Blind Jokes (Should You Do It?)
You know those flow charts of “should you do x?” going around? It’s like that, but screen reader friendly. Should you write blind jokes. It’s pretty complicated and there are a lot of possible scenarios and details to consider.

A small essay addressing the frequently asked question on giving your blind character a superpower to help them “see.”
It’s became a popular question, so to make the answer easier/faster for everyone to access, I wrote what will usually be my initial answer. Below there are a few links to some notable past questions on this subject.
Mourning My Vision, it’s More than Depression.
A small personal essay addressing the nuances of the mourning period you experience with a new disability. The mourning period is mentioned in other guides, but this is more detailed.
Dealing with Heightened Senses, a video by Molly Burke with additional commentary by me
While Molly talks about the myths and truths about heightened senses, I talk about the correlation with blindness and neuro-divergency and how co-morbid disorders/disabilities might affect sensory processing.
Satirical Commentary on the phrase “that blank look in their eyes” used too often in fiction to identify a blind character
a:tla, I’m looking at you (and my eyes aren’t blank)
I Found a Lost Piece of Blindness History
My grandmother told me about her blind aunt and how she sent letters. It led me to speculate about all the O&M things people develop on their own but never get a chance to pass onto other blind people. Technology and techniques are lost in history and reinvented, including the white cane ad guide dogs.
Includes a little history on the introduction of guide dogs into the 20th century

[ID: two screenshots of a reddit post on r/offmychest by user awaythrowjessie, titled "My girlfriend made me realize I'd be happier as a woman". it reads as follows:
I am 33, born male, and have had major self image issues my entire life. I hated seeing myself in mirrors, pictures, you name it. I honestly thought it was kinda normal so I just accepted it.
Now about 3 weeks ago I was at my girlfriends house, we have been dating a little over a year now, and have plans to move in together soon. Now recently she has shaved her head to support of her friends with cancer (side note thenl treatments for that friend are going very well). She had since bought some wigs to wear while her hair grows back out. We were joking around as I have male pattern baldness, and when she went to the bathroom I jokingly threw a wig on and waited. She came our, saw me we laughed for a bit and she said "you know I think you'd make a pretty girl" we laughed some more but those words triggered something in me.
Cut to a few night's ago she asked why I've been acting weird lately and I just told her how i was feeling. She said "alright let's do this " and when I asked what she told me she was going to give me a bit of a makeover and put me in one of her dresses and if i liked it then good. I was nervous and asked what if I did like it would she still be attracted to me. She just responded with "Baby you know I'm bi, guy or girl you're still mine." Her words reassured me honestly i love her so much.
Anyways she finished the make up, fitted a wig on me perfectly and got me in a dress and even helped me put a bra on and stuff in a little so i could see what breasts would kinda look like on me. Now I expected to see myself in the mirror, laugh this off and move on right, but I didn't. She did an unbelievable job, like I looked like I had been born a woman, and when I saw myself in the mirror for the first time in my entire life, I liked what I saw. I probably stared at myself for a good 10 minutes before she finally asked me something. She asked what I wanted to be called. After a few seconds I said Jessie, I always like the name Jessie. She whispered in my ear "well Jessie, you look beautiful." And that was it, I knew this was who i wanted to be.
I'm nervous now though, my friends will accept it but my family are, well let's just say not very progressive. But this is what I want.

[ID: A screenshot of a Reddit post from r/offmychest by user awaythrowjessie, titled “I went out as Jessie for the first time and I was honestly surprised”. The screenshot reads: Hello everyone, this is an official follow up to my previous post that went viral and caught me off guard.
So me and my girlfriend, (Who has officially agreed to disclose her name lol) Emily, had gone shopping for me to get me outfits and the like. Earlier today i put on one of those outfits and officially faced the world as Jessie for the first time.
To say I was nervous would be an understatement. We went to our local mall and I was almost shaking, thankfully Emily calmed me down and said if anyone said anything mean to me she'd handle it, then playfully threw up her hands like a boxer lol. We stepped inside and started walking around going in stores and I noticed something, no one was staring. Like at all. I live in an area that still has issues with LGBTQ people so I was afraid of staring or aggressive people. But none of that happened. People greeted me, the store workers were kind and nobody looked at me like I was weird. I felt comfortable, and Emily even said she saw someone check me put, though i doubt that.
This was unbelievable to me and honestly I felt like myself. I feels nice that I can go out without worrying about Judging eyes.
To all the supporters of my previous post thank you, you have made me happy. Ill keep this account going to let you join me in my journey and once I'm confident enough I'll post up some pics of me and Emily too :) end ID]
I'd much rather people reblogged this version of the post than any other at this time btw
I think a lot of people spent their childhoods being very deliberately forced out of their comfort zones by parents / teachers / whomever in a way that was just deeply unpleasant and degrading and so, when they reach young adulthood and are finally allowed real control over their lives, become set on only doing things they know they're comfortable with forever. that's a really important thing to be able to do, especially if you're so used to having your boundaries routinely ignored that you aren't even certain what you like vs what you can bear, so I absolutely see why a person would have a negative reaction to being told that discomfort is good: it can very easily sound like being told that all that work they've been doing to prioritze their needs for the first time ever is Bad and Selfish, actually. and to that I will say two things:
one: as long as you aren't hurting or, like, being a dick to anyone, just staying in your comfort zone isn't an immoral action. if you just want to read one type of book (or just fanfiction), or just eat one type of food, or just watch one type of movie, or not go to new types of social events, you aren't being bad person for that, and if people say that, they are soundly wrong and just trying to get a self-righteousness kick.
two: trying new things because you want to expand yourself feels a hell of a lot different than trying new things because you're being forced to. you'll feel better about trying new foods if you know you have a back up familiar one in case you can't stomach the new one, it's easier to read new books if you can experiment with audio versions or reading it in little five-page chunks by yourself, you can breathe a lot easier going somewhere new if you aren't chained there for three hours because your parent is your ride home, etc.
tl;dr: new things are good. I get why you might not want to try new things, and that's fine, but it's also more comfortable to try new things as an adult with your own agency so, yeah, what have you got to lose by trying a weird old art film?
At my work, we talk about the “Stretch Zone” and the “Panic Zone”. Things in the Stretch Zone are outside the Comfort Zone, but not too much outside. They’re things we can imagine ourselves doing, things we feel reasonably capable of trying. The Panic Zone, on the other hand, is too far outside the Comfort Zone to even contemplate. Just thinking about going there is too much.
Nothing good happens in the Panic Zone; we’re too frightened/upset/triggered/etc. to learn anything from it—our brains are literally too stressed for it. But the Stretch Zone is where learning and growth happen. And by committing to spend a little time in the Stretch Zone regularly, the boundaries of both the Comfort Zone and the Stretch Zone slowly expand to include things that used to be outside of their boundaries.
We have people draw diagrams, like bullseyes, of their Comfort/Stretch/Panic Zones, and put various experiences and activities they want or need to do on the diagram. Which things in your Stretch Zone are nearest to your Comfort Zone? Try those first, see how you get on. When you’re tired of stretching, retreat back to the Comfort Zone for a bit and recharge. When you feel ready, go again.
What’s in your Panic Zone that’s near the outer edge of the Stretch Zone? Is there anything that could get it across that line? (E.g., Could it move into the Stretch Zone if you knew more about what to expect? If you had a solid backup plan? If you were confident there wouldn’t be any consequences if it didn’t go well?)
“Pants were invented for men” not according to my ancestors.
Pants were invented for riding horses. People who didn’t have nomad horse culture all wore dresses. Dress wearing old greek men considered pants to be the mark of barbarism. Like the Scynthians and Samaritans.
Also- the Scynthian and Samaritan tribes were known for equality between genders. Where women were renouned hunters and archers. They are where the greeks got the idea for Amazons.
So sorry bro pants are totally for women. You just mad its for riding something that’s not you.
Okay but like based on genital structure, it would actually make sense for mean to wear skirts and women pants, why are we even talking about logic

The reconstructed face of the “Cheddar Man” (c. 7,000 BCE) compared to his living descendant, Adrian Targett
The Cheddar Man is a Mesolithic skeleton that was recovered from England’s Cheddar Gorge in 1903. At around 9,000 years old, the Cheddar Man is the oldest complete skeleton ever discovered in the UK, and has long been hailed as the “first Briton.” DNA analysis on the Cheddar man from 2018 indicated that he was lactose intolerant, had light-colored eyes, dark brown or black hair, and had a dark to black skin tone. Although the discovery of the Cheddar Man’s dark skin tone was surprising for both scientists and the public alike, it corresponds with recent research suggesting that genes linked to lighter skin only began to spread about 8,500 years ago - approximately 32,000 years later than what was previously believed.
In addition to the development on his skin tone, the Cheddar Man surprised scientists in 1997 when DNA analysis revealed that he had a living descendant - a retired history teacher named Adrian Targett. Targett and the Cheddar man share the same mtDNA, which is passed down from mother to daughter. In other words, they share a common maternal ancestor. What is even more remarkable is that Targett lives in Cheddar, only a half mile away where his 9,000-year-old ancestor was discovered.
Targett was not invited to the initial reveal of his ancestor’s new facial reconstruction, but he has since seen it and has commented on the family resemblance. “I do feel a bit more multicultural now,” he once joked in an interview “And I can definitely see that there is a family resemblance. That nose is similar to mine. And we have both got those blue eyes.”
The development of the Cheddar Man’s skin tone has generated resistance, especially among far-right and white supremacist circles. Targett, however, is unbothered by it, stating that it is “marvelous what scientists can reconstruct once they sequence the DNA.” When asked if he thought whether the findings affected the way people think about race, Targett responded: “Yes, I do think it’s significant. Not many people in Cheddar mind it. But the lesson is that we’re all immigrants, whether you’ve been in a place for 10 minutes or 9,000 years. We’ve all come from somewhere.”

Okay I’m currently furious that migraines are often so blindly easy to treat and I had to find this out myself at the age of 26 when I’ve been to a neurologist since I was 11 lol so I’m about to teach you two neat and fast little tricks to deal with pain!
The first is the sternocleidomastoid muscle, or the SCM muscle.
This big red section is responsible for pain around the eye, cheekbone, and jaw, as well as some temple pain. Literally all you have to do is angle your head down a little, angle it away from the side that hurts, and then you can gently pinch and rub that muscle. I find it best to start at the bottom and travel upwards. The relief is so immediate! You can increase pressure as you feel comfortable doing so.
Here is a short and easy video showing this in action
The second is a fast and easy stretch that soothes your vagus nerve, which is the nerve responsible for calming you down. The vagus nerve, for those unfamiliar, is stimulated by deep breathing such as yawning, sighing, singing, or taking a deep breath to calm your anger in a tense situation.
You can stretch this out by sitting up as straight as possible (this does not have to be perfect to work) and interlacing your fingers. Put your hands on the back of your head with your thumbs going down the sides of your neck and, while keeping your face forward, look all the way to one side with just your eyes. Hold that until you feel the urge to breathe deeply or yawn, or until you can tell there’s a change. Then do the same thing on the other side. When you put your arms down, you should clearly be able to turn your head farther in both directions. If the first session doesn’t get rid of your migraine, rest and repeat as many times as necessary. I even get a little fancy with it and roll my eyes up and down along the outer edge sometimes to stretch as much as I can.
If you need a visual here’s a good video on it. I know some of the language they use seems questionable but this is real and simple science and should not be discarded because it’s been adopted by the trendy wellness crowd!
I seriously cannot believe I didn’t hear a word of this from any doctor in my life. Additionally, if you get frequent recurring migraines, you may want to see a dietician. Migraines can be caused by foods containing histamines, lectin, etc. and can also be caused by high blood pressure in specific situations such as exercise, stress, and even sex.
If any of this information helps you I’d love to hear it btw! It’s so so fast and easy to do. Good luck!
*currently suffering from a horrible migraine. Tries this*
Are you fucking shitting me it works!?
@thebibliosphere I don't know if it'll help, but it may be worth looking into.
This is something my magic physio man also taught me. It helps if your migraines are triggered by muscle tension. Not so much if you have other root causes like OP mentioned above.
Nine trying to send a distress signal to any potential other survivor of the Time War. That’s not a good idea.
Inspired (a couple of months ago) by this picture made by this user on DA.
Apparently this comic is making the rounds again, and the people who reblog it are just as angry with me as they were two years ago.
hey op fuck you (but in a good way because holy shit)
At this point this comic is nearly six years old and people are still angry ; it kinda warms my heart that so many people are as emotional about Nine as I tend to be
Continuing off from this brilliant comic.
Hope in these trying times.
@orneryjen Excuse me holy shit
[First comic:
We see the Doctor inside the TARDIS with multiple glowing cubes on the floor around him. He touches one, and it plays a recording he has made:
“If you are recieving this message, please make yourself known. I am the Doctor and I am looking for other survivors of the Last Great Time War.”
The Doctor releases the cube into space, and then wonders around the TARDIS aimlessly. He keeps going back to the door, and waiting with it open, then returning inside to find other things to do. Finally, there are 3 knocks on the door, and the Doctor quickly takes the returned cube inside, smiling and holding it like it’s precious. As he sits down, it begins to speak:
“If you are receiving this message, please make yourself known — I am the Doctor and I am looking for other survivors of the Last Great Time War.”
The Doctor slumps forward against the TARDIS’ console, head in his hands. The cube sits silently in front of him.
Second comic:
The Doctor is leaning against the TARDIS’ console, head in his hands. In front of him, the cube says: “Playing first message. Beep!”
He looks up, startled, as the cube flies into the air. It continues, “Hello, Doctor! It is Max, the Great! No Timelords ‘ere, but I’ll chuck this over to Quadrant Delta when I get the chance.”
The cube continues flying and it’s words surround the Doctor’s stunned body: “Hey Doc! You’re alive!? You’ve got to send us a proper letter! What have you been up to?”
“ … the time war has ended? This is news … ”
“Greetings Time Lord. We shall share your message. It is the least we can do.”
“ … 'ave you tried Greg the Judoon? Just get him ice cream before he smashes your face … ”
“ … Baww-urrp! Crunch! Crunch … ”
“ … Beela wants to say 'hi’! Say 'hi’ Beela!”
“Wow! You’re not dead yet?”
“ … Zautaro is rebuilding. You must visit us … ”
“ … does Keanu Reeves count?”
“ … You owe me 50 squids. Don’t forget!”
“ … you are always welcome on Maloraii, Savior … ”
“02374A1UDSA!?”
“Ahhiiiieee! What is this flying thing? Get rid of it!”
“ … Hope you find what you’re looking for, stranger!”
“ … Safe journey and good fortunes, traveler … ”
The cube flies back into the Doctor’s hands, saying: “There are 498 messages remaining. Would you like to continue?”
The Doctor holds the cube, looking comforted.
We see the TARDIS flying away into space.

Gorgeous!! I really love the reflections of the light off his hair, and in his eye. Those are the sort of details that make me just like, *fans self*
First ever recorded snowball fight (1897)
Happy Holidays And Merry Christmas To All!
Colorized!
Guy On Bicycle gets so smeared he leaves his hat behind to escape!
All Victorian ADULTS. Awesome.
I love this so much. Someone slowed it down so it's not the old-fashioned herky-jerky of old films, now someone colorized it…the past feels like the present because, well, people. Lookit them having fun! *beams at everyone*
You guys I just found out about this guy who made 3D printable files for adapters for game controllers to allow them to be used one handed! It’s so clever and easy and accessible, unlike other adaptive controllers. It just snaps onto a regular controller. The way the stick is controlled is damn genius. So much easier than trying to use your feet like other systems.
A friend is using one due to a stroke and as someone with problems from arthritis, this is so great to see, in case I get to the point I really can’t use my right hand.
Please share and give this guy some love, cause this is awesome.
