personally, it doesn’t motivate me at all. but you’re right, he is a white guy from Chicago. a white guy from Chicago who is opposed to abortion funds and telemedicine abortion providers who help people in states like Texas and Louisiana access lifesaving abortion care.

as a lifelong advocate for abortion rights: you will simply not ever see me handing it to the catholic church! he’s calling safe abortion a “so-called” right. you all can fight side by side with whoever you want, go with God. but I’ve spent my whole professional life and quite a bit of my personal one fighting alongside doctors, nurses, doulas, abortion funds, and some of the fiercest advocates I’ve ever met, and I’m not gonna abandon that lifelong effort to hand it to the head of an institution that’s fought us every step of the way.

I know I’m coming off stridently, but when I look at how Catholic hospitals deny people abortion care, miscarriage care, and abortions in emergency situations (and deny other care they object to, like transgender healthcare), and you realize that 28% of hospitals in the United States are Catholic hospitals, I hope you’ll appreciate why I’m personally so unwilling to applaud a man who has tremendous influence over the directives those hospitals are following to deny pregnant people emergency care, and who is unlikely to use that influence because again. he does not believe pregnant people have a right to safe abortion care.
