Some Filipino things about Encanto

I know the film isn't set in the Philippines but I wanted to share my thoughts as a Filipino watching it so bear with me

First of all, the name Encanto is present in our language, but spelled Engkanto and is actually derived from a different Spanish word altogether

Engkanto also has a bit of a negative meaning for us in that the best translation would be is "environmental spirits that can take on the form of a human, but sometimes of varying sizes". If you say "na-engkanto siya" (he/she encountered an engkanto) it meant they ran afoul with a spirit

Interestingly, engkanto can also generally mean any mythological spirit as it is a broad term

Perhaps more intriguing is that Luisa and Isabela is reminiscent of the legend story "Si Malakas at si Maganda" (the strong and the beautiful) and the two titular characters are considered engkanto

Funny enough while searching for some reference, google translated engkanto to fairy

Something that also caught my eye is Bruno knocking on wood. I know a lot of cultures do this but it struck out to me since it's a superstition prominent in the older generation of my family

(To those who don't know and too lazy to search, to knock on wood is to "not tempt fate" when saying something like "i might fail my test today" or "im getting that promotion next week"; it's tied with luck)

Another superstition that is somehow similar to knocking on wood is the phrase "Magdilang-anghel ka" (may you have the lips of an angel) which we say to wish that one's words will come true. Like when someone says "your business will become popular", you wish for it to become true

Anyway, can i just say the way everyone pronounces names sounds so familiar to me. Because of the song, everyone rolls their R's in Bruno's name and Madrigal's emphasis is on the first syllable

Overall, I really love this film and I wish I'd seen it on the big screen to fully appreciate Bruno dancing in the background of Dolores' verse in We Don't Talk About Bruno lol

Just watched Encanto (spoilers)

First of all, the music and visuals is absolutely beautiful and inspiring

The pronunciation of the names sounds really familiar coz we have a lot of Spanish surnames in my country

My friends said I have a Mirabel-like vibe (mostly coz I have curly hair and glasses)

But I actually LOVE Dolores, especially her whispery voice and rap-like verses

"We Don't Talk About Bruno" and "Surface Pressure" are both amazing but my top favorite is probably "What Else Can I Do?" purely for the line "a hurricane of jacarandás"

You know for some reason I thought Bruno was voiced by Josh Gad coz he kinda sounds like Olaf in certain points

I kept forgetting that Dolores, Camilo and Antonio are siblings lmao they barely interact

I saw a theory about how the triplets have a color-coding thing going; Pepa's family is full of yellow, Bruno is green and Julieta's mostly blue and purple/pink. Abuela kinda has it as well with her red/violet dress. The fact that Mirabel has all these colors in her design is genius

Luisa's voice is so fascinating to hear in "Surface Pressure" coz the pitch lowers and rises and I see myself in her coz I never sing in one "voice"

Bruno, Hernando and Jorge are so amusing we need more of them

The fact that the Madrigal family and the film in general is female-centric gives me such happy thoughts

If you look closely at the photos of the kids gaining their gift/door with Abuela beside them, you'd notice that the only time Abuela is posed differently is in Isabela's photo with her head tilted slightly. I wonder why?

Speaking of the photos, Bruno is absolutely adorable as a kid

I wanna know if the guy and his aunt end up together though...

SPOILERS: In the final scene when the magic reappears on the door, Mirabel's glasses lit up with it. Part of her name means "to look" and there are a ton of "Open your eyes" lines throughout the movie and I think it's part of why Mirabel is the best one to suceed the family coz she "sees" the things that are hidden (Luisa) and the potential (Isabela) in her family

I totally think Mirabel's 'gift' is to be the next keeper of the flame (her door is the front door of the house itself, meaning her family is her world) like her Abuela
