Special Occasions at Home
Taking stock of all things magical this year!! xx
This year has seen a few special occasions celebrated at home. First of all my sisters 28th surprise birthday tea party and second my parents 30th anniversary! Letās just say that the birthday tea party was very much trial by error. I woke up at 7am and rushed around Nairobi still in in my pyjamas, trying to pull off an incredible surprise for my early riser of a sister. Nairobi is not the bestā¦

Christmas Picnic
Last year my friends and I came up with the great idea of celebrating christmas with a āSquadā style picnic. We by no means do picnics half hearted, and this year we went all out.

I always find that travelling home lights this unmistakable euphoria deep down inside of me. Many of you may relate to this-especially if your home is as beautiful and wonderful as mine! I always find that on my short connections that all I can think about is food-most of you might be laughing at this point and thinking when is this never a central thought in my head⦠and to you I say touché!

Feeling Festive!
Greetings, followers!
Some of you may be wondering where Iāve been for the past few months and to that I answer, Law School. I felt a little guilty for a few weeks in late September when I realised that my fortnightly posting had pretty Ā much gone down the drain. It was then at a party that I was presented with a solution by a very good friend. That solution is seasonal blogging. So, if itsā¦

Sun, Sea and Thrills
In between all the indulgence which included wine tastings and set menus, we somehow found time to do a few touristy things. As we were situated on the beautiful coastline of Portugal, a lot of these activities included water sports and excursions far out to sea. I love the sea and all it has to offer, so each new excursion left me beaming and desperate to book the next.
Our first adventure wasā¦

Salt Lakes & HotĀ Springs
When it comes to spending the summer months in Kenya, you quickly find that you have exhausted all means of entertaining yourself. There are only so many lunches you can have, nights you can go out on and family get-togethers you can participate in, before it gets rather dull. So after hopping on a flight home and surprising my family and best friends, I was rather eager to hear of where ourā¦

Portugal has always been on my bucket list. My knowledge of the country and its cuisine were very limited before I landed in Lisbon. Iād learnt a few tales in school of the adventures of the likes of Vasco De Gamma and their discoveries and that was pretty much all I could relate to Portugal. The trip taught me a lot more than I could have imagined. I tried a range of dishes that were both unique and delicious. Hereās a few tips on how to eat in the Algarve!
***
The first thing I will point out is that the Algarve is a long stretch of coastline with very different towns lining it. I found that Albufiera was unique in that one was able to experience a calm romantic holiday with the prospect of partying all night being an option too. Albufeira is very much a town that is rich in night life-with most bars opening in the late afternoon and staying open to the early morning hours. What this type of environment attracts is cheap alcohol, wonderful cocktails but rather disappointing food options. I guess most people would say that you know what you are getting when you go to such a party centred holiday destination. Long forgotten is the quality and quickly ushered in is the need to sell more. This meant that there were countless restaurants halfheartedly trying to sell the āAlgarve Dreamā with ālocal cuisinesā and āAlgarve specialsā. What they were actually selling, fell short of any of these titles. Food in these restaurants came quickly, covered in grease and accompanied by utensils that came in a packet. For someone who enjoys things which demonstrate a little more effort I struggled on the first day when wondering around in search of food.
We decided to break up our search with a few cocktails atĀ Bar Snoopy.Ā I was fist drawn by the turquoise coloured cushions siting atop the crates-come chairs. The bar staff are what you would imagine in any beach bar in California or LA-long golden dreadlocks, tattoos and sun kissed skin- I wasĀ veryĀ surprised! The cocktails were pretty and bright but very strong too! I soon found myself skipping in search of a restaurant.
***
Our first restaurant turned out to be the best in the area.Ā Cabana FrescaĀ had a view of the Sea and a long line of people waiting. I took both as an incentive to want to dine there too. After waiting for around fifteen minutes we were shown to our table. Cabana Fresca is an odd looking restaurant with its large plush leather chairs dotted around small tables covered in white linen. The chairs say office whilst the table cloths and setting say cic beach restaurant- itās all very confusing! With the Portugese flag hung in each corner in sight and the four large screens showcasing the Euros, I had no idea what to expect. Our starter put me at ease when a simple sardine and tuna pate arrived with freshly baked rolls. A dish so simple and yet I found myself thinking about it for days to come. Imagine extra virgin olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, pink pepper corns and smooth tuna pate. It was small, light and refreshing. It may not look like much but I used it as a indicator of the meal to come-which was nothing short of exquisite.
For my main I decided to have what the person sitting next to me was having. The menu said āprosciutto wrapped sea bass stuffed with sun-dried tomatoesā. I couldnāt imagine how all those flavours would pair together.Whether this would be an attempt at the common prosciutto wrapped chicken gone wrong. However I was brave and decided to give it a go-a choice I will never regret! The fish broke apart effortlessly and coupled with the smokey prosciutto my senses were slightly confused yet excited. It was fresh yet comforting and I wasnāt really sure why. I can only recommend it to you all!
Ā Iāll now fast forward to a few nights later when we ate here again. I choseĀ cataplana, a traditional Algarvian dish which is very similar to paella. It had an assortment of fish from mussels to langustine. It was an extremely big portion for one person but all the dress loosening and seat readjusting was worth it!
Our next culinary adventure took place atĀ āĀ At first I wasnāt sold. Only a stone throw away fromĀ Cabana Fresca andĀ filled with pleasure seeking retirees I was more than dubious. One look at the specials board however quickly changed my mind. Nothing else on the menu seemed authentic so I let my eyes wander over the āfull english breakfastsā and āhamburgersā to the simple grilled sardines. I had been told that I couldn;t leave Portugal without having grilled sardines with freshly made bread rolls. I was quick to oblige but decided to order a side of chips too! I cannot emphasise how truly suculent the sardines were. Grilled with only sea salt and arriving with a few wedges of lemon it was so simple yet a culinary delight-please go out and have some now!
Last but by all means not least myĀ favourite thing to eat in the Albufeira was the Algarve dessert. I have never to this date eaten anything like it.Ā Its made from a thick layer of fig preserve, carob and almond blitzed together and a fine dusting of icing sugar. Itās extremely sweet and satisfying and again does not look like much but really does taste incredible. Its very gooey and soft and wonderful-writing about it now has me craving a piece!
My favourite drink to date is theĀ Green WineĀ of the Algarve region. Its light and crisp and frankly not like any wine I have ever tasted. Sometimes the colour can be a bit off-putting as it can be somewhat transparent with no golden hue to it. I feel as though any bottle of Vinho Verde is one to have, buy and fly home with!

Spending my University years at Leeds has been wonderful. I have fully immersed myself in the student culture. Weekends are like any other day, because at university everyday is a worthy day to party. Itās all down to you-whether you can go out on a Tuesday night till 3am and make it in to that 9am seminar, or not. You are the one in charge now. So you must appreciate what a rude shock working nine to five every day has now been for me- especially because Iām still in Leeds. The weekends are very much sacred, precious and even loved. I sit at my desk each Friday afternoon mind tired but eyes glued to the little clock at the bottom of my computer screen. I elongate tasks such as washing up my mug or making that fourth cup of green tea in a row. Even a trip to the bathroom may leave others wondering what strange bowel movements Iām dealing with. So now, I am part of the working classes and although I love catching up on my sleep, I try to do as much as I can on the weekend.
This weekend I found myself scrolling through āwhatās on this weekendā to try and find something fun and interesting. I must admit that being a student for so long in Leeds means that the only cultural thing I can think of doing is visiting a beer or jazz night, Ā rather than coming together with the dub heads at the famous Warehouse nightclub, or going big at one of canal mills boorish nights. I seem to find that everything in Leeds is centred around drinking and sometimes eating-a fact that I really do not mind. So this weekend when I stumbled upon the āBelgrave Feastā I was more than happy to partake in an eating and drinking afternoon in the retro environment that is Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen.
It was loud and the smell of jerk chicken, freshly baked pizza and tandoori naan permeated the air. There was a certain buzz with groups huddled round jugs of Pimmās and pints of sol. Eager customers weaved through the crowds clutching charred hotdogs, chips and bao buns. My head turned with every boxed meal and although I had just finished some nachos and guacamole in the cinema I was in desperate need to try the bao bun.
I had my bao bun with cantonese chicken. it was glazed in sweet soy and had a slightly charred flavour to it. Inside was succulent chicken which paired wonderfully with the freshly cut spring onion. It was small but delicious and for Ā£4 for one or Ā£7 for two I had no complaints. Ā Hereās a look at the company and the chef:
All in all the day was wonderful. Drinking a glass of white wine on the rooftop terrace with the odd bit of sunshine breaking through the gloomy clouds was a perfect way to spend my Saturday. I would definitely recommend the āBelgrave Feastā and for those of you who decide to go to the next one-see you there!
Also bring cash, none of the food stalls accept card and you donāt want to have to go looking in search for a card machine! Shout out to the guy manning the pizza oven, our shared love for bao buns was endearing!
Bittersweet note but for anyone who tries to contact the entertainment team through Facebook they are awful with their replies. I have now sent three messages which have all been read and ignored-its a shame that such a wonderful establishment doesnāt have time to listen to its patrons!

Iāve recently started working at this law firm and my boyfriends moved back to London- so all in all thereās a lot of change and adjustments going on in my life. For those of you who donāt already know, I study Law at Leeds university. What this means is that I have an insane amount of work, I can recall the strangest of cases at any given time and I am part of one of the best societies in Europe- that isnāt me just gloating itās actually a fact!
Being part of the best society allows me to take part in all the best activities and nights out. Our final Law day out involved the York Races. We all got dressed up- I even wore heels for a grand total of 20 minutes and we began betting.
In total I won Ā£10, and as I canāt speak for my betting skills I can only give rundown of the days activities. After being picked up by our coach at 11:00 we began to pop bottles of prosecco and get ready for the days activities. When we arrived a few of us stumbled through to say the least. The food was surprisingly basic, and I settled for a good old sausage roll which was delicious. The day then involved betting, more drinking and lots of envious stares at those who had won āthe big moneyā.

To say I love afternoon tea is an understatement. Iām not sure where my fascination began, but seeing as I love all things sweet and colourful itās somewhat understandable.
To me afternoon tea is all the best possible treats and snacks all in one. I canāt resist a chance to go to a tea room, even if itās only to gawk at the pastries and only have a drink. Truth be told thatās very rare!
We decided to break up our day in Harrogate by having lunch and then coming back for dessert at Bettyās. Lunch was hearty, rich and incredibly satisfying. I ordered a Rƶsti which came with Gruyere cheese, bacon, mushrooms, spinach and raclette cheese. It was simply divine. On recieving your plate of utter heaven, your server arrives with three pots of chutney. You can either have caramelised onion, sweet tomatoe or Apple. Iām not one to shy away from trying anything so I quickly asked for all three. I soon found the tomatoe irresistible and the onion paired perfectly with the rich cheese. I would really recommend these two as I found the apple too sweet. Paired with a rose bud tea whose petals unfurled before you in a large white tea cup, it was a lunch to remember!
For dessert we each chose differently. A white chocolate and passion fruit cheesecake for my sister with earl grey tea and a raspberry and creme anglaise tart with elderflower bubbly for me. The tart was refreshing in comparison to my sister choice which was extremely rich and dense. The pastry crumbled like perfect shortbread and with the fresh elderflower it was a perfect pair. I would recommend Bettyās to anyone in search of some good hearty food; with rich ingredients and perfect taste. The traditional tea room is quaint yet merges well with the modern world and nestled in Harrogate high street itās a perfect find.
Ā For an edible souvenir pop into the shop and pick a box of the traditional shortbread and Bettyās tea room tea.
