How to make a character's death sadder
Don’t have them die of old age after a long, fulfilling life. Many people don’t even think of this as sad (note that this can still work if you have enough of the other factors).
Leave one of their major goals unfinished. The more enthusiastic they are about completing the goal, the sadder.
Give them strong relationships with other characters.
Make them fight against whatever is causing their death. Their ultimate loss is sadder if they struggle.
Kill them in the middle of their character arc.
Don’t describe their funeral in detail. Maybe it’s just me, but I find that long descriptions of funerals kill the sadness.
That’s enough Satan’s publisher…
>B)
7. If possible, try to kill them off in the middle of the story, so we had time to like them and we will have time to let the loss settle in.
8. Also, place surviving characters in a situation where having the deceased person there would help them get out. You can choose whether you will point this fact out or if you want the audience to make the connection themselves.
9. Make them die by sacrificing themselves to save someone they love from a danger created by the antagonist.
based on a few deaths that made me blub like a baby…
10. have their loved one, broken hearted, tell the team to stop fighting because “its over.”
11. have their pet come looking for them.
12. have their loved one perform a popular song at their funeral so it makes the fans cry whenever it’s played.
13. family witnessing the death and/or blaming themselves.
~ Mulan
so… let’s add some frustration to your dear readers’ sadness, shall we?
14. kill the character in the middle of making a joke, smiling, or expressing/experiencing joy/happiness.
15. make the character’s death slow and painful, but make them unable to call out for help even though they can literally see the other characters nearby.
16. after killing the character, have others think the character had betrayed them so they’d always hate them and remember them as traitors and never say nice things about them… Give your readers no chance to have group-therapy with other characters by making them the only ones who know the truth.
17. right before their death, show a side of them nobody has seen. (someone who is always tough and brave being genuinely scared of dying alone; someone who is always laughing being in tears before dying, etc.)
18. make them the only person who knows a big important secret that would help other characters in the story.
19. have them being lied to before dying. (thinking they’ve been betrayed; thinking they weren’t loved; thinking they’ve lost their loved ones, etc)
20. make the character very enthusiastic/passionate about a certain goal, constantly put stress on their goal, have them die unexpectedly before they can reach their goal.
and the best one…
21. have another beloved character kill them–better be a close friend to your character, one that absolutely nobody suspects, one that everyone can’t help but love, one who is always enthusiastic about things and encourages your character. THEN
reveal the truth only later when it’s too late and the a-hole character has already escaped.
have a cowardly character know the truth and never tell anyone else
have another character find out the truth and have them die before revealing it to others.
have the said character ^ not actually die, but go through something so they’d forget the friend of the deceased character is actually an asshole.
This way only your readers will know the truth, thus the frustration would be… most enjoyable for you.
Satan out.
24. Show how it effects the other characters. Don’t just gloss over it. Is this the death that pushes them over the edge? Do they blame themselves? Do they scream at everyone and break down, or do they suffer silently?
25. Have their family find out. The mother screams, the dad cries, the brother punches the wall or holds the body sobbing “I was supposed to protect him”, or “come on, you need to wake up”
Antra no stop pls
22. Don’t kill their body. Kill their mind.
Leave the physical shell walking and talking, but strip out everything that made that person who they were. Make them forget all about their loved ones, themselves, their experiences and past, their skills, and have them have to start over completely from scratch. Physical and mental disabilities bonus points.
And keep them in a place where their loved ones will be taunted every day by a living ghost.
27. Have them die by accident. Take the character the readers will love most, who has never been mundane throughout all the time the readers knew them. Take that special character, the leader, the fighter, and let them die from something none of your characters could have prevented. A rotten bridge, a runaway carriage or drunk driver. Anything that could happen to anyone. Let it happen to them.
I feel so much pain right now.
This post pleases me
Describe their death through a loved one’s eyes during a moment of triumph. Describe their exhilaration about their win, only to crush it later as the character dies
thanks @happydooky for suggesting posts so often!
28. Make the death pointless. Maybe they died trying to save their child from the antagonist, but it turns out the antagonist never had the child, they were just at a friend’s house and forget to leave a message.
29. Make the death a character whom someone else depended on to keep themself functional. Make the death happen to a character who knew what to do to keep their friend or family from spiraling downward. Don’t necessarily kill this character off, let them slowly get back onto their own feet later, but first let the surviving character get knocked down. Let them get lost without their supportive character.
30. Make it happen after an argument. Make them die before they had a chance to make amends. Cripple the surviving character with guilt over what turned out to be their last words to each other, now to be left unresolved forever.
31. Give the other characters survivor’s guilt.
32. Make a surviving character have to take over the dead character’s responsibilities. Make them feel overshadowed, struggling to live up to the idolized memory of the dead character. Let them try to emulate the dead character in the role they inherited, then struggle with the fact that they’re not that dead character.
This is so useful seeing as I kill off all my characters
@carverly
Just reading some of these made me hurt, so I feel like this would be useful to you
33. Take an immortal character, someone who always comes back, someone who has died so often death has no meaning to them, their loved ones or to the readers. Make this time permanent. This time they’re never coming back. They’re gone.
34. Tease a chance to save them, say look the battles being undone! Only for it to end five seconds to soon
35. If you’ve already killed off their family, have them whimper the guardian closest to them, I.E, auntie or momma
36. Give another character the same sickness, but they survive it
37. Kill the comic relief. Controversial, but very effective imo. Take the character who, throughout your entire story, has been nothing but smiles, jokes, and special bonding moments with the other characters. Give them a slow death where they spend their last moments still trying to lighten the mood and make everyone smile. Bonus points if one surviving character was always annoyed by them but never realized how unsatisfying life would be without them.
“Writing a book is so easy.”
Yes. Writing a book is the easiest thing in the whole world. In fact, let me show you just how easy it is!
Goal: change all this paper into a book.
Eh, not that hard. I mean, you just have to read, right?
Maybe scratch a few notes in the margins as reminders.
Yeah, writing and editing isn’t time consuming or painstaking at all.
In fact, I find it quite relaxing. Good meditation. No stress whatsoever!
I mean, it’s not like writing a book involves any train of thought or decision making, like when to cut scenes, because whatever you write is perfect and there to stay!
I mean, come on, it’s not like I’m going to rewrite the first chapter 51 TIMES to make sure it’s how I want it, right? That’d be crazy.
And no, it’s not like I spent over 3,000 HOURS READING AND REVISING 14 DRAFTS OF THE BOOK to make this book readable.
No sweat, no tears, no blood, and DEFINITELY no coffee stains.
Nope, writing is the easiest job in the world. I don’t see why anyone thinks otherwise. I mean, all we do is scribble words and take a few out, right?
We feel no satisfaction AT ALL when we receive a shipment of the final product for a book signing. *yawn* BOR–ING.
Nope, we don’t get excited at all. It’s just another day in the life.
And the sequels? Bitch, please. That’s child’s play.
You’re right. Writing a book is so easy. It’s not stressful, not exciting, and it’s definitely not worth the reward of holding something that USED TO BE EXCLUSIVELY IN YOUR HEAD AND NOW YOU GET TO SHARE IT WITH THE WHOLE WORLD.
Im not sure this scares me or inspires me…
so much more respect for writers now

I would like to personally apologise for being unrightfully spiteful towards Johnny Depp.
“what are you reading?”
“its a…online book.”
“oh cool, what’s it about?”
“….uh….”
I love that everyone just knows
Or…alternately:
“what are you writing?”
“it’s a….story.”
“oh cool, what’s it about?”
“…uh…”
“can i read it?”
“Oooh what are you drawing? Can I see?”
I FEEL THIS on a personal level
no but also “what website is that?”
“you have a tumblr? can i follow you?”
“what kind of blog is ur tumblr?”
What makes this funnier is that most of these users have deleted their accounts.
It's so relatable it's almost scary
Do you want me to tell you something really subversive? Love is everything it’s cracked up to be. That’s why people are so cynical about it. It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don’t risk anything, you risk even more.
Erica Jong, Fear of Flying (via deceptivelips)
they got mad
Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this about his father, who died of cancer on September 1st, 1982. At his father’s funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie’s room, Billie simply said, “Wake me up when September ends.”
So I’d be angry too if people kept this shit up every single year.
i am going to reblog this until i die
…oh
Seriously its just not funny and I wish people would stop
I reblog this every fucking year. Leave them alone.
Every year.
“There is one thing I like about the Poles – their language. Polish, when spoken by intelligent people, puts me in ecstasy. The sound of the language evokes strange images in which there is always a greensward of fine spiked grass in which hornets and snakes play a great part. (…) When [the Poles] spoke to one another, sometimes in French, sometimes in Polish, I sat back and watched them fascinatedly. They made strange Polish grimaces, altogether unlike our relatives, who were stupid barbarians at bottom. The Poles were standing snakes fitted up with collars of hornets. I never knew what they were talking about but it always seemed to me as if they were politely assassinating someone. They were all fitted up with sabers and broadswords which they held in their teeth or brandished fiercely in a thundering charge. (…) They hissed their long polychromatic words through tiny, sensual mouths whose lips were soft as geraniums. These furious sorties with adders and rose petals made an intoxicating sort of music, a steel-gibber which could also register anomalous sounds like sobs and falling jets of water.”
— Henry Miller, Sexus
i just read a washington post article on romcoms aging poorly due to the pushiness (and oft-stalkery conduct) of the male characters therein, and it got me thinking about pride and prejudice, and specifically darcy saying, “one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”
because, like, that’s the seldom-portrayed romantic dream in the patriarchal hellscape that is our world, isn’t it?
a dude being willing to say, “i understand if you don’t feel the same way about me, and i’ll leave you alone forever about this if my attention is unwanted.”
so simple, yet so wonderful in its basic human decency
and dudes to this day wonder why women still swoon over darcy
Note also: Elizabeth turns down Darcy’s first proposal, and in the process, accuses him of doing some stuff he did not do (and also some stuff he totally did).
The next day, he surprises her on her walk. He hands her a letter, asks that she read it, and then takes off.
When this happened to me after I had turned someone down IN REAL LIFE, the letter contained a passionate argument to the tune of “actually you’re wrong and you do like me and you should go out with me” and it was creepy af.
Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth starts with: “Be not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter, by the apprehension of its containing any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers, which were last night so disgusting to you”. He goes on to set the record straight about the stuff he didn’t do (as well as the stuff he did) which is *actually relevant* to Elizabeth. And he, as promised, doesn’t romance her further.
It’s totally bizarre that even now, this can be considered unusually great dude behaviour.
Darcy’s first proposal: “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
Darcy’s second proposal: “One word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”
His whole arc in the book is about learning to consider other people’s feelings and not just his own, but the fact that it’s expressed via who gets to talk and who is told to shut up is so, so telling. The first time around, he imposes his voice on her whether she wants it or not. The second time, he asks how she feels, and in exchange, offers her the gift of his silence.
And yeah, the fact that dudes still! have! not! learned! this! lesson! is exhausting.
THANK YOU ALL FOR THIS!
The other day my mom said something that i found really insulting to the 2d animation movies, she said that they stopped doing those because they were no longer appealing to the audience and that they were supposed to be discontinued, and i just thought how bullshit of an argument that is.
Comparing 2d animation with 3d and saying one is superior is like saying that digital art is better than traditional art, better than the fucking Mona Lisa, The creation of Adam, in fact, is a pretty ignorant comparation to do because one does not suprass the other, but new techniques are getting invented and we invest in those more.
Is just another way of animation, in fact, the shitty move all those studios did by closing their 2d animation studios eas pointless and it´s gonna cost them greatly, because someday people are gonna want to go back to the 2d animation and studios like Disney or Dreamworks will be too scared to do that, that will be the day that other studios will take upon them and give us what we want.
2D animation has the most beautiful animation i´ve ever seen, there´s something in it that i can´t explain that makes a big difference from watching cgi, and what i think would make a great combination is the great amount of details that you see in CGI and 3D movies into 2D techniques so you could expect to see shit like this
Atlantis (2001)
Treasure Planet (2002)
Sinbad (2003)
5 centimeters per second (2007)
The princess and the frog (2009)
Children who lost their Voices (2011)
Beyond the boundary (2015)
Your name (2016)
So whoever dares to say 2d animation is dead is wrong and also a bitch
It's been so long since I posted sth here last time
You see these boys?
These boys used to be no one. No one but kids leaving their homes to go to the Big city in hope of achieving their dreams.
2013
This boy was studying to get his acting degree when he was found. This boy rejected the offer of being considered for EXO, believing he was getting scammed.
This boy suffered from social phobia, depression and alleged suicidal thoughts. These boy’s parents were against his love for rap, leading him to leave home.
This boy’s dad was against his dreams. This boy felt like he was a disappointment to his other his whole life. This boy hid his sad self.
This boy never thought he’d be an idol. This boy was in the 1% of students i Korea at one point and has an IQ of 148. This boy left all that to be a rapper.
This boy left his parents and younger brother to go to Seoul. This boy changed his life and at first was alone in a big city. This boy was one of the poorest members. This boy had body issues.
This boy was raised by his grandma in a village for 14 years, knowing very little of what else exists.
And this boy found himself ;saving his parents at 14, only to be give to 6 other boys, whom he did not know.
These boys had nothing to eat.
These boys were happy with just 500 views.
these boys were happy with just 150 fans.
These boys did not expects 300 fans at their members birthday party.
In fact tho boy wrote all 300 fans a little sticky note and gave them a little food, despite barely having for themselves.
But now it is 2016.
This man is now a great singer. This boy is now being more beautiful than ever. (But this boy needs more lines)
This man is now the caretaker of the group, making sure everyone is ok, healthy.
This man may be under appreciated but he is the one who makes the members feel comfortable with him, despite him being older.
This man is the one of the first ones to produce, to write, to create. This boy is the one to fix and mend.
This man is the one to pretend
to be annoyed with th younger ones,
only to truly love them.
This man now dedicates his life to giving 1097% of energy and happiness to others. Even if that means that there will be none left for him. This boy found happiness in the happiness of others.
This man dedicated his solo on his album to his mum.
This man now feels proud for once.
This man is now the leader of the group. This boy produces, writes and slays.
This man takes care of every member, whether older or younger.
This man appreciates every fan, speaking english when he can.
This man now feels better about his body. This boy loves his members the most.
This man will always make everyone happy.
This man got upset at his friends for not accepting Jimin.
This man bought 1100 dollar sweater for Jimin.
This man’s grandma died before he could dedicate his win to her. He won the day she died and all he said was ‘I love you grandma’.
But this man is ok. Because he had others with him.
He is now also an actor.
This man now acts like he is the hottest thing on stage. But then comes the backstage videos and he is just
so precious.
This man admitted to crying only when he sees his members cry. Because he can take pain. But he can’t stand it when others are in pain. He’d rather hurt than his beloved hyungs.
Here is some proof of their bond:
Support
Brotherhood
Love
Brotherhood
Friendship
Respect
Loyalty
Teamwork
(Some people told me their bonds look gay.
1. They are very close, after all they spent years only together.
2. So what if they are? Good for them to be comfortable and not shout NO HOMO every time they touch each other.)
And now, after 3 years they got their daesang awards. Not 1 but 2: Best album and Artist of the Year. Those boys deserve it.
The performance was so elegant and beautiful
So graceful
The dances captivating
Energetic
This cutie was so surprised he just lay on the couch.
Min Yoongi once said that the only time they will cry is if they receive the artist of the year award, their goal. Ladies and gentlemen, may i present you Min Yoongi breaking into sobs, as he achieves his dream.
Once again, so graceful
The music choice also amazing
I would suggest to all to chest out their performances on MAMA 2016
The group hug
The thrill
Last years, the boys were not even nominated for best dance but here they are.
jungkook did not even realise their name was called.
NO BTS. Thank you.
Thank you for taking us on this crazy ride.
Thank you for letting us cry. laugh and celebrate with you.
Thank you for being an inspiration.
Thank you for proving that one can start from the bottom and succeed.
Thank you for giving us hope.
For motivating us.
We love you boys! You guys really deserve all the awards you get and more!
So congratulations boys!
I love you!
We love you!
Teamwork makes dreamwork!- Kim Namjoon/Rap Monster
Thank you for reading!
(Special thank you to the best producer and CEO Bang PDnim!)
PS. I don’t know if this is appropriate but i would also like to say congrats to my beloved boys from Seventeen
and Taemin
And congrats to everyone else!!
This isn’t my normal content but I feel so happy and proud for them, I cried when they received the award and I’m still crying now when I think about how moved they were, filled with joy and gratitude towards they fans. They deserve it, they’ve all worked so hard for it, starting from nothing, they’re not even from a big company and yet they got two daesangs the same year. Seeing their faces and them holding the award makes me believe that one can achieve anything by working hard and believing in one’s dreams. They’ve come such a long way and look at them now, look how far they’ve come. They’re great artists, but they still remember about their fans, Namjoon thanked ARMY first while he was struggling to hold back the tears, and he acknowledged us,international ARMY, by speaking English at I just couldn’t help crying seeing them like this. I’m just so proud and happy and thankful to them, cause they gave me wings so I could believe I could fly and they fill me with hope with every line of their songs, every note, every movement of stage, but most of all every smile they share with us. They deserve all the happiness in the world 💜
