Can I ask a genuine question? It's going to sound judgemental, but it's not, I want to actually know:
Why do fanart creators within the warhammer fandom reference each others art instead of the actual text descriptions of characters?
Like there's a weird feedback loop or closed off ecosystem of Primarch fanart where somebody draws, say, Konrad Curze as a bulky muscled square-jawed ugly he-man with eyes that have black sclera and light irises, and then other people clearly use that as the reference point for their art and then someone else uses that art as their reference point, so on and so forth. Each one has its own small unique variations, but they're largely at their core a kind of copy of a copy of a flawed original?
I use Konrad Curze as the example because the difference between the fanart depictions and book descriptions is so stark.
He's consistently--consistently--described as gaunt, emaciated, rangy, bony. A solid amount of text describes him as having a narrow face with a refined nose, high cheekbones, pointed chin. His eyes are always black, not black with light irises (that seems important? Like Nostramons have dark eyes because it's implied they evolved to be almost entirely pupil for better night vision? I dunno, maybe thats just nitpicking).
Hell he's even described as good looking underneath all of the filth and madness, but the art makes him a standard issue ugly guy.
And it's like...I dunno, annoying that all of the Primarchs are drawn with the same template of Big Muscle Square Jaw Man when in actuality there's a good amount of variation re: their appearances? Like Lorgar is described as having a slim "androgynous" torso, but again: always a muscle-y dude in fan art. There's a reason why all Space Marines have a similar, template look to them, but the Primarchs? Nah. They're individuals.
And I'm sure the fact this irks me is driven by my neurotic audhd tendency to go "Why is none of this accurate, why does nobody else care about things being correct, hnghhh nooo."
The answer is probably "Because that just doesn't matter to people as much as it does to you, they want to draw the characters the way they want to draw them, it doesn't matter"
But it still...it still irks me, man. I can't not be irked by it.
I can give my 2 cents on this as a fan artist,
A lot of it to me just comes down to the original descriptions being inconsistent and hard to find.
I've read my fair share of warhammer books, and often times the same character is described differently by different authors, so a lot of the "incorrect" interpretations are correct, just only in the context of one specific book.
There is also the issue that indepth descriptions of the primarchs are not readily available. In the past when I have gone looking for descriptions of them I can usually only find brief overviews of them, but it is actually surprisingly hard to find the original, indepth source descriptions unless you already have them saved somewhere.
There is also the issue that the official art and the models often doesn't line up with the book descriptions, and are often times slightly,,, ugly? So I (and I assume many other artists too) tend to stay away from the official art because its not the best reference material.
Because the original material isn't always the best, a lot of us just end up basing our work on the depictions we see most often, which is other fanart.
There is also the thing to note that most artists have things they like drawing, which heavily influences how they will depict certain characters. Half the primarchs I draw have hooked noses, not because its canon, but because I like drawing them. You are not going to catch me giving Magnus straight hair, I do not care what the source material says.
I agree with what you are saying, and in some circumstances I too get annoyed by the inaccurate depictions. But I think it's less that we don't care about accuracy, and more that it is annoyingly difficult to be accurate.
I've been getting back into animation recently and I decided to make a Gif of Fulgrim

Mortarion in a test style, it's not actually finished but I kinda like it how it is, so I probably won't finish it

(Not yet finished) but what do we think so far? I’d say it’s an improvement for sure, but there’s always places to tweak and practice on
Here are some pointers if you are interested, if the unsolicited advice is unwelcome let me know and I'll remove this reblog 👍
The saturation of the colours looks good, but the values of the background and the character are pretty similar. The thick lines do help to set him apart from it, but if you wanted to make him stand out a bit more you could make the background a slightly different hue or adjust the values a little bit.
The way the values are grouped looks good, but the focus of the image is currently the tail and the shoulder pauldrons, as the lighter colours stand out from the background. This isn't necessarily a problem, but it does mean the head doesn't stand out from the rest of the body. Adjusting the colours of the armour near the head could help it to stand out a bit more. Making the collar area and the powerpack either lighter or darker would help. Alternatively, adding something like white markings on the helmet (possibly on the fin on top of his helmet?) and making the eyes glow could also help it stand out.
The right hand stands out well from the background, but the left hand blends into the dark lines around the fins. A possibility would be making the whole hand lighter, or making the claws of the hand white to help define the shape of the hand. You could also make the lines around the fins slightly thinner.
These pointers are all pretty minor things, overall it looks good.
