I was looking at wrapped gifts under the tree today and saw one to me from my mother, tagged with
â B Vesâ
She started to write my dead name, then corrected herself. She is TRYING to get the hang of my new name. Though it is very difficult to be patient sometimes, remember that itâs a transition for you AND for those around you.
Keep your head up and happy holidays!! <3
My mom has three sons, she just doesnât know it yet.
My mom has three sons...but now she knows!!
âStrangerâ -a trans poem
Wholeheartedly,
I stared in the mirror
for an hour that night.
I gazed into my own two eyes.
In a moment
like a never ending twilight,
I felt my heart collapse
in on itself.
This body
in which
I have walked upon the Earth
is a tomb.
For twenty years,
a billion cells have fought
to keep me alive.
A vessel,
a means of transportation,
a shell in which my breaths
have resonated
and released
time and time again.
I see a soul
stuck in between
who it is,
and who it wants to be.
Awoken from pleasant dreams,
oh few and far between
they may be,
I feel foreign in my own skin.
As if I havenât known these cells
for decades.
A sensation of surprise,
and the purest disgust,
engulf me, reflection staring back.
Who is this person I see?
Do they know me?
Stranger,
please be kind.
Teach me how to live,
how to stand it
in this warm flesh.
Until I can morph it
to be a home
and not just a place of dwelling.

Unexpected things/tips about top surgery:
-give yourself more than enough time off work/school/life to recover. I spent the first week in bed and couldnât do anything on my own. I was still uncomfortable and in pain during the second week. I didnât have full mobility until 5 weeks.
-laying down/sitting up was very hard to do by myself. And laying down is the scariest trust fall youâve ever done. I was crying as my mom lowered me down onto my back.
-I couldnât hold a water bottle up high enough so you need straws to help you drink.
-Youâll need help washing your hair for the first 2 weeks. And itâs probably best to not shower until your drains are removed because your chest is scary to look at. When you do shower itâs hard to wash your armpits. I used a removable shower head but I needed help getting it down because I couldnât reach high enough to get it.
-my drains used maxi pads under the binder and my mom had to change them while I closed my eyes because the one time I looked I almost passed out after seeing the blood.
-I couldnât walk farther than the bedroom to the bathroom for the first week. You need someone to make and bring you food.
-nerve damage. My elbow got sharp pains when I put weight on it trying to sit up/lay down and at random times.
-your incisions will really hurt if you try to lift your arms before 2 weeks. When you do lift your arms, donât put them higher than they can go. It took until week 5 to be able to reach directly above my head with a straight arm.
-donât let anyone/anything hit your sides/back because there is blood clots/swelling there that will hurt a lot.
-follow the instructions your doctor gives you such as wearing the binder for 2 weeks so you heal nicely.
-I had a really hard time even writing/holding a pencil/moving my arm up to the paper for the first week. And I certainly couldnât have worn a backpack so make sure youâre well enough before going back to school.
-When you start wearing t shirts again, put your head in first and then one arm at a time, making sure your arm doesnât go too high because it will hurt.
-donât try to do too much, rest and sleep a lot so youâll heal faster. Donât lift/push/pull heavy things for 4-6 weeks because it will hurt your incisions.
Phases are VALID.
In the LGBT+ community, the word âphaseâ has become such a negative term. Some of us may have been told that our sexual orientation, romantic orientation, or gender identity is âjust a phaseâ and weâll âgrow out of itâ or, âget over itâ. In that context, that idea comes from ignorance, but there is another side to the story. You see, phases DO happen. They are VALID. Being gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, transgender, or any and all other identities is not a choice. However, accepting yourself as that identity IS a choice. You canât choose how you feel, but you can choose to embrace it or refuse it. Itâs all a matter of how honest you want to be with yourself, or how honest you are ready to be with yourself. Itâs a process. Every single one of us, both within the LGBT+ community and outside of it, is in constant growth. Thatâs life. You live, you learn, you grow, you change. Thereâs nothing wrong with that.
Sometimes, certain identities are stepping stones. Before I came out as lesbian, I came out to a select few people as bisexual. I genuinely felt that way at the time. Later on, I realized my attractions had changed, and that is perfectly valid. Identifying as bisexual gave me a way to âdip my toe in the waterâ so to speak, and begin to accept the possibility of liking the same sex. It doesnât mean I was confused. It meant I was growing. Years later, when my gender identity began to change, I identified as queer instead of lesbian. I identified as gender non-binary, because I didnât feel like I âfitâ into the female or male categories. Two years after coming out as gender non-binary, Iâve come to accept myself as a trans male. Again, all of those identities are valid and countless people who resonate with them stick with it. Just because you identified as a certain thing for any amount of time, and donât now, doesnât invalidate those feelings.
I encourage you to do research. Speak to people with various identities, if possible. Everyone has a story to learn from. You never know what will be eye opening for you.
In summary, let yourself feel and experience the things. Allow yourself to try different labels, no labels at all, different pronouns, different names, etc. There is nothing wrong with trial and error. Give yourself time.
