Why waking up at 5am is the best drug created
Finally the alarm rang. The bright screen on my iPhone lit up in my dark room. I reached over in bed to switch if off, and the screen read:
"Nothing in life comes easy - hard work beats talent anytime, anyplace"
It was 5am, a cold winter morning in Dublin and I was ready to hit the Google gym.
I had started the evening before to mentally prepare myself for what was to come: Leg day.
A fire in my stomach and a sense of happiness crawled in on me as I put my feet out of bed and on the cold floor. A feeling that this day would bring me closer to my goal. An unknown goal.
I had no intention of becoming the next Arnold Schwarzenegger or going back down the path of a professional athlete, which I had already been as a cross-country skier.
No, this goal was different.
Even though I did not know why I had for the last 10 years of my life approached every single workout in this exact same way, with no goal and no clear vision but an inner drive and happiness for sports like no other - I always knew that giving it 110% in this workout would take me one step closer to becoming the person I wanted to be.
The strength of character. Dedication. Persistency. Confidence.
That was what I was fighting for. My battle. And one in which I was determined to walk out of with pride and confidence every single time...
For many people, working out is a pain in the ass. Something that needs to be done. A way to look better. Or live better.
Their minds will go to great lengths in coming up with excuses and limitations, not to mention how little impact missing one workout will have on their lives. After all, there will be another day tomorrow.
Working out is not as much of a means to give you an attractive body as it is to develop your mind.
It's a natural high. A battlefield. A struggle within yourself that you can choose not to engage with, sit back and let life play out the way the universe had intended for you.
"A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for."
Success = The Greatest Drug Ever Invented
What I have learnt from being one of the top cross-country skiers in Norway, to climbing mountains in Himalaya to getting a job in Google is to give it your all in every single situation you face.
From taking care of my loved ones, to nailing it in interviews, to push myself to the point of collapsing after races - it's all linked together.
And that is the single biggest reason I don't miss those 5am workouts. Never have and never will. They strengthen my dedication and shapes who I am in life.
And that is the message I want to pass on to you too. You are meant for great things in life. But sitting back and letting the temptation of that pizza, that party, that TV show that you can't miss - take ownership of your inner dedication, is not meant for you - be the boss of your own mind and go out there and achieve something instead.
Because then, you will truly see that the success you see when working out, gives you the confidence that passes over to all other aspects of your life.
Success is a drug like no other. It's a high like no other chemical can reproduce. Sticking to your planned workouts and giving your all in every single one of them is success.
Repeat this process over and over until your success becomes a habit. Something you do. Something you're good at. Then you will see that life takes a direction towards the top.
As a wise person once said:
"If an egg is broken by an outside force, life ends. If broken by an inside force, life begins. Great things always begin from the inside."
