POV: Y/N has been going a bit. . .crazy
Youโd been feeling it for days nowโ
the spinning in your head, the fog that never quite cleared. Sometimes the walls seemed closer than they were, the floor a little too far beneath your feet. You told yourself it was nothing, just fatigue, just your mind playing tricks again.
Today, the house was quieter than usual. Unumโs wives were busy entertaining Shams and Noor, the childrenโs laughter echoing faintly from another room. Unum himself was off on some errandโor perhaps just wandering, as he often did. That left you alone.
Your stomach gnawed at you, empty, unsettled. You found yourself drifting into the kitchen, feet carrying you without thought. The fruits on the counter gleamed under the dim light, unnaturally perfect, vibrant in a way no fruit had any right to be.
You plucked a banana from the basket. The skin was smooth, almost too smooth, and the scent sweet and heavy. You didnโt think twiceโyou never thought twice these days. The dizziness made sure of that. You peeled it open and took a bite.
The taste wasโฆ different. Sweet, yes, but cloying. It left a strange tingling on your tongue, but you chewed and swallowed anyway, convincing yourself it was fine.
You turned to leave when movement caught your eye.
The pantry door wasnโt shut all the way. A sliver of darkness swayed, and something inside shifted, scraping faintly against the shelves.
Your pulse jumped. An intruder?
Your fogged mind sharpened in an instant, adrenaline burning away the haze. You set the half-eaten banana down, your fingers fumbling for the nearest thing to defend yourself with. A rolling pin. The wood was cool and solid in your hand, heavier than you expected.
You crept toward the pantry.
A voice snapped from the dark.
โUnum? I CANโT SEE SHIT! GIVE ME THE CANDLE!โ
You froze, breath caught in your throat, but your eyes caught a detailโthe faint glint of blue hair shifting in the shadows.
Your body moved before your mind did. With a startled cry, you swung the rolling pin down. The solid crack of wood against skull rang out, followed by a grunt of pain.
The figure stumbled back, collapsing onto the floor. You staggered out of the way, rolling pin raised for another blow if needed.
The light shifted, and the figureโs face came into view.
Your grip loosened. The rolling pin nearly slipped from your hands.
โUhhโฆ Y/N??โ Unumโs voice drifted from the doorway. He stepped inside, gaze darting between you, the banana on the counter, and Quinque sprawled on the ground. โWhat did you do to Quinque?โ
โIโโ Your lips moved sluggishly, the words sticking. โI thought he was an intruder.โ
Unumโs brow furrowed, concern mixed with disbelief.
Before he could speak again, another figure hurried inโAeliana, her eyes wide with alarm. โIs everything alright? I heard a loudโoh myโ!โ She gasped sharply, hands flying to her mouth as she spotted Quinque. โWhat happened??โ
โI donโt know?โ you shot back, defensive, clutching the rolling pin like it might still justify you. โI didn't know it was- I-I thought he was trying to break in!โ
You noticed that your words seemed a bit too nonchalant.
Unumโs eyes narrowedโnot at you, not exactly, but at the fruit on the counter. He pointed at it slowly, dread in his voice. โY/Nโฆ did you eat that?โ
Your gaze followed his finger. The banana. Half eaten. Innocent on the surface, lethal beneath.
โโฆYeaaah?โ Your voice cracked, uncertain
Later, you sat stiffly across from Quinque. He pressed an ice pack to the side of his head, refusing to meet your eyes. The silence stretched painfully, thick with embarrassment and the faint sting of guilt in your chest.
โI amโฆ very sorry,โ you murmured at last, the words heavy. โI donโt know what got into me.โ
Quinqueโs jaw tightened. His eyes flicked up at you, then away again, as if the sight of you was salt in a wound.
โโฆItโs fine,โ he said flatly, though his knuckles whitened on the ice pack. Frustration trembled under every syllable.
But your apology wasnโt the only thing weighing on you. Your stomach twisted, nausea curling deep inside. A sour taste coated your mouth. Your skin felt clammy, your body weak. The dizziness from before swelled into something more dangerous.
Unumโs warning echoed in your mind now, too late to matter.
Hope you liked it ๐ซถ๐ฅบ
