Someone I followed just reblogged a post starting out with "It's incredible how much Anakin fans truly do not want to grapple with the fact that Anakin is a VILLAIN. He is The Villain of the story. It's not actually Palpatine really. It's Anakin." and I don't think I have ever unfollowed someone as fast in my decade long Tumblr stint. Sometimes I don't know why I bother with this fandom, because I see takes like these weekly, and it is so disheartening and makes me feel like I'm surrounded by illiterates. What I wanted to say with this is, thank you for being a breath of fresh air and one of few sane people around. People like you make this fandom worth it.

*blinks twice* Not even Palpatine?! Then why does the OT end with Anakin returning to the Light (and being narratively redeemed) by defeating Palpatine, with that being treated as a happy ending?! He's certainly a villain by the OT, but he's not the capital-V Villain by any means. Heck, he's not even the capital-V Villain in ANH either: that role goes to Tarkin, with Luke's revenge storyline being a textbook case of the "It's Personal With the Dragon" trope!

george lucas called darth vader "a villain who's really the victim" and gave like a million interviews explaining that fans misunderstood vader, that he made the prequels to show him as a sad, tragic, and pathetic figure who had been failed by the people and system around him, only for the pure geniuses in the fandom to get mad at you for acknowledging anakin's victimhood and analyzing that part of the character, as if it were some kind of a moral failing on your part and not, you know, engaging with the text as the author intended
