I had this freshman tell me she “couldn’t” audition because she was too scared of the stage, and might have a panic attack. I asked how she felt about walking around onstage in costume and not saying any lines. That was fine. I was like okay awesome let’s lay some groundwork now and maybe senior year you can have like three lines!

I remember this kid who came into an audition and froze up, just couldn’t speak. Competent reader and speaker but when people were watching she couldn’t do a thing.

We cast her anyway, in a chorus role. Offered her lots of support and encouragement and kindness and grace.

At the next audition she whispered. Anyone who had never seen her before would have thought she was the most nervous kid there. But the directing team was abuzz afterward. Did you see? She did it! Once or twice I could actually almost hear her! Amazing.

Got cast again, in a chorus role. She’d been making friends with the other kids, and they offered her encouragement too.

And the next audition we said wow I can hear her! She’s speaking! Let’s give her a handful of lines! She can do it!

Anyway as a mentor in the performing arts these things are huge wins for me. Some kids are competent and confident performers at 7 or 8 almost by nature. Others, even much older kids and adults, have to make progress by inches. But progress is exciting! The only place to go is up!

If a student is encouraged properly, theatre is one of the best sources of self-esteem, self-reflection, and both spontaneous and rehearsed eloquence/comprehensibility that there is. It truly could be considered a cornerstone for communication disciplines of all kinds if it just attracted the right people to teach it. (Unfortunately a lot of people are attracted to directing for a sense of power over others, and not an interest in mentoring and coaching.)

Originally, I went in worried the opposite would happen. Growing up, I've been taught that Nigeria, the country, is homophobic. (I was born in America.) But over time, I learned that there's tons of other queer Nigerians; some are out, and some are in the closet 😭.

I'm also not used to this much attention, lol

My finished trapunto quilted gambeson for Vax! It was so cool to take techniques I learned on my Galadriel gambeson and dial them up further for this design!

As Vax is associated with ravens, I designed various wing and feather motifs wrapping around the body, a stylised raven skull in the back, and then added his “threads of fate” in hand stitched gold embroidery ribbon.

As I'm working on my Howl cosplay, I thought I'd share my favorite ten-second trick for determining if you've got the right contrast in your fabrics!

Take a photo and put it in grayscale. That's it!

When you want a design to read as recognizable, clear, and sharp from across the room, you want to be able to see the difference clearly in grayscale. Since I want the harlequin design to be clear on my Howl jacket, this will be perfect.

And you can use it the other way, too! For example, the reverse side of my pink fabric is a beautiful shiny light pink. In grayscale, it's the same value as the blue, even the same shine, and the only difference is the little bit of texture that comes through in the jacquard.

It would be a bad choice for a sharp, clearly visible design. But if I wanted subtle visual interest that didn't dominate the outfit, and didn't want the design to stand out, these fabrics would be a great complement!

The argument that corsets are bad for you because they move your organs around is so funny to me like. Honey just you wait until you find out how much your innards jump around and compress when you breathe in and out normally

In 2003, this white and gold damask Tudor-style gown was worn in the miniseries 𝑯𝒆𝒏𝒓𝒚 𝑽𝑰𝑰𝑰 by Emilia Fox as Jane Seymour.   The costume actually originated in the 1977 𝑪𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒔, where it was worn by Lalla Ward as Princess Elizabeth.   The piece has been used many other times over the years - notably on many a book cover. This at a time when humans are being replaced by machines and AI anxiety is pervasive. “The whole show is structured around a typology of bodies, and these are bodies that you see across the museum when you encounter artworks,” Bolton explained. “The simple thesis for the show really is the fact that the dressed body is the connecting thread throughout the entire museum.” What you won’t see anywhere else at the Met are mannequins of diverse body types modeled after named individuals, like those commissioned for “Costume Art.” And this is transformative in many ways. I really wanted to know more about this, especially how the water proof stitching works. Here's more information on this project, and hopefully more in the future!
