So Mike based everything off the Snow Ball in season 1 - “oh no, El, we can’t be brother and sister, cause you can’t go to the Snow Ball with your sister!” (paraphrasing)
But then Dustin ends up dancing with Nancy, who probably sees him as another brother because he’s one of Mike’s best friends - and both of them acknowledge that it’s platonic, Dustin’s not there like “omg she’s in love with me”
And what’s more, Dustin only ends up with Nancy because he’s sitting alone and sad after the girls he had a (potential) romantic interest in rejected him
You know who that reminds me of? Right, it’s Mike
Mike and Dustin are direct parallels throughout this whole scene - Dustin watches Lumax the same way Mike watches Will and the other girl, and they both end up sitting down, alone, visibly sad
Dustin gets cheered up by dancing with Nancy, and Mike gets cheered up by dancing with El, and in both cases it’s because the opportunity presented itself to them at the last minute - in the script, Mike is described as “just want(ing) to go home”, not as waiting for El
Mike and Nancy are also kind of paralleled, because Nancy invites Dustin to dance, and Mike invites El to dance - and remember, Nancy sees Dustin like a little brother
So after Mike’s *whole* thing about how he and El can’t possibly be brother and sister because of the Snow Ball, the “couple” they’re paralleled to by the narrative is a platonic duo who have a brother-sister relationship
