I've been reading Whipping Girl recently and its been mostly a pretty good read however Serano keeps trying to merge the concepts of social constructionism and biological essentialism by creating the concept of "unconscious gender" which I kinda hate. Like why the fuck are we holding on to the concept of a gendered brain when:

a) the scientific evidence is just not there and the evidence she brings up(serano) doesn't even convince her fully, yet she still believes in it b) This concept of having a "gender center" in the brain is always brought up by trans allies and even fellow trans people as a gotcha against conservatives claiming trans people's brains closely align to that of their cis counterpart(this also becomes incredibly hard to argue when bringing up nonbinary identities as there is no cis counterpart) and if this argument is later proven to be false then it supports the idea that being trans is just a delusion.

If there is such a thing as a gendered brain what the hell does that even mean? What does it mean to be FACTUALLY a woman? It doesn't mean anything without social context, its a learned category. Even identical twins don't share the same gender identity in all cases and they have the same exact DNA and pre-natal environment. What makes more sense is that at an incredibly early stage of psychological development the idea of gender roles become internalized based on observing their external environment. Hell babies develop racial biases somewhere in the first 3 months and there is definitely not a racism center in the brain which means that incredibly young infants can begin to grasp social dynamics which is refuted by Serano. I agree that children may be more inclined to internalize certain roles based off of inclinations towards certain behaviors but I have not seen any compelling evidence for the existence of a "gender center" in the brain. Idk why im even posting this but I need to get it out of my system.
