They say to me, " your heritage must be a sin

Then I read in the books never relent

I learnt from another to stay true

Then I read more and my eyes twinkled.

I devoured this wealthy pages whole like fufu

I knew I was so much more, I was empowered

When they came back to taunt me, I hit them with my new found juju

But even with the books, my heritage was taunted

I then wrote for them to read about amala and sharia

I took them on a journey until they felt haunted

For every page was about this Naija

I made them crave for my heritage of Africa.

I dived so deep, I lost myself in you

I dwelled in the pain, hoping better would come

I couldn't see that dead was dead

I was stuck in the motions of a time warp, a façade of beautiful

A taunting mediocrity of less

Clipping my wings, shutting me out

Telling me it was in my head

But, this love was nothing but desperately clinging on to the darkness

I'm immune to that sting, that distasteful sound
