i don’t think apocrypha was always a moldering library. i think recently hermaeus mora delved deep in the dark academia tag
seriously though based on mora’s traditional epithets (the “woodland man,” the “gardener of men,” etc) i like to think apocrypha used to manifest more like a forest, which was probably a lot scarier than the stacks
like imagine going into the woods to learn something forbidden. you walk and walk. you’re alone in the woods. the trees are thick and gnarled. their sap is ink. their leaves are uncured parchment. they’re planted in neat rows like the trees of an old orchard, but they’ve been left to grow wild. you realize that some of the branches bend at unnatural right angles. some of the branches bend at angles you can’t comprehend. the fruit of knowledge is rotting on the ground. you’re disoriented by the stench and the rhythmic buzzing of flies. you eat the fruit. the flies pulsate like a heartbeat in the air. you comprehend the angles of the trees. you realize that the orchard hasn’t grown wild at all. it’s been shaped and tended by a very careful gardener. you realize that you aren’t alone in the woods

So when the Tribunal went and pissed off Azura and she cursed all the Chimer for it (not unlike a high school teacher) and they became Dunmer, we all talk abt the gray skin and dark hair and red eyes but nobody mentions how she just decided they were all gonna be arbitrarily half a foot shorter too
Azura after creating the Dunmer:
Travel Time in Skyrim
(reposting from my Hero story)
Hires Map | Hires Travel Days Map
I wanted to make a note about Skyrim’s geography. I don’t recall where I found it, but someone else estimated that Skyrim was approximately the size of the country Poland. Early on when I started writing “Hero by Mistake”, I calculated distances between landmarks by road travel, and plugging in the maximum distance a horse could travel in a day whether carrying a person or dragging a cart. I am putting this at 16 travel hours per day for Skyrim’s hardy horses – this is twice the max for Earth’s horses, so we’ll blame this on magic, yes? Heh. I estimated how many travel days it would take to reach any given place, more or less. So, I estimated that horse-travel days by road from Whiterun to Windhelm would be about three (in Polish terms, this would be approximately from Bialystok to Lodz). Windhelm to Riften would be about four days byhorse or cart (approximately Bialystok to Rzeszow). Double that time if you’re walking. I don’t know how accurate my calculations are, but at least they’re more accurate than in-game travel!
An easy guide is using the above map of Skyrim. Diagonally, each grid square is one travel day by horse/cart, 1.5-2 days foot travel. If you want to “push” travel time (say, you need to get somewhere RIGHT NOW, extend beyond the grid square slightly). I tried to account for easier road travel, and more difficult travel across rough terrain.
Travelers might make use of landmarks for camp sites, such as huts and monuments. So for instance, one horse travel day could be between Rorikstead and Swindler’s Den, between Karthwasten and Sky Haven Temple, between Ivarstead and Froki’s Shack, or between Morthal and Meeko’s Shack. These distances would be about 2 days of foot travel at the very least.
Comparisons
312 kilometers (aka Windhelm to Whiterun)
Horse travel: 3 days, 16 hours per day, 6-7 km/h, 48 hours total
Fit foot travel: 8 days, 8 hours per day, 4-5 km/h, 66 hours total
Child/family/unfit foot travel: 30-50 days, 3-5 hours per day, 2-3 km/h, 104-156 hours total
Example Calculations
Windhelm to Whiterun
Northern Path: Windhelm stables, Nightgate Inn, Lorcius Farm, Whiterun stables - three horse travel days
Southern Path: Windhelm stables, camp across the river from Cronvangr Cave, cross the river at Mixwater Mill, kill bandits at Valtheim Towers and camp there, camp in or near Stormcloak camp, Whiterun stables - four horse travel days
Windhelm to Riften
Windhelm stables, Kynesgrove, camp near Mzulft or Imperial camp, Shor’s Stone, Riften stables - four horse travel days
Whiterun to Solitude
Northern Path (avoiding Labyrinthian): Whiterun stables, Lorcius Farm, Fort Dunstad, Stonehills mine, Morthal, Meeko’s shack, Dragon Bridge, Katla’s Farm (Solitude stables) - seven horse travel days
Western Path: Whiterun stables, Fort Greymoor, Hamvir’s Rest, Labyrinthian, Morthal, Meeko’s shack, Dragon Bridge, Katla’s Farm (Solitude stables) - six horse travel days (not overnighting in Labyrinthian)
Winterhold to Windhelm
Winterhold, camp near Stillborn Cave, camp near Forsaken Cave, Windhelm stables - three horse travel days

wow i sure love being a merchant in the riften marketplace in 4e 201 !
tes games are funny like theyll have all sorts of stupid shit but you find really important stuff out and yet cannot tell anyone or do anything. like you cant mention that theres a torture dungeon in the leyawiin counts basement where he tortures argonian citizens. you cant inform anyone that ulfric stormcoat is a thalmor asset
i downloaded a Todd howard mod for Skyrim special edition and had him join me as a follower, until I had to dismiss him for a bit to do a companions quest
but when I went back for him in whiterun a courier found me and handed me a letter telling me that he fucking died
i think the best practical joke any video game pulled was Skyrim opening their game making you think the rebellion was this amazing noble cause against an oppressive government (as most fantasy universes frame it), but then you pretty much immediately find out that the stormcloaks are just racists with swords and the empire isn’t really all that terrible save your standard government problems.
yall are gonna have to stop sending me messages about how im an imperial government of tamriel apologist
the greybeards aren’t any help either. or the blades. Skyrim is just a bunch of rednecks who hate each other.
THE DARK BROTHERHOOD WAS GOOD TO EVERYONE
they killed people for money
But at least they weren’t racist about it
Those bloodthirsty hired killer were the nicest most accepting people in Skyrim
