I'm still only just digging deeper into the comics stuff, I've barely read any, due to not being able to find many. But I keep seeing references around/people bringing up the part of Danny and misty's relationship where they break up (and also Misty having a miscarriage(?)) and was wondering what comic that was in. I'm also wondering if you have any favorite comics for happier Misty/Danny moments, as I'd like to read that as well.
Welcome to the wonderful world of comics! For Marvel, if you’re having trouble getting your hands on physical issues, we recommend getting a Marvel Unlimited account. It’s relatively cheap, and gives you access to massive amounts of material. Comixology is another great resource, and you can also buy digital comics from most of the individual companies’ websites. (For anyone not in the U.S. the situation is a little trickier, but from what we know, these sites should still be accessible from most places.)
As far as Misty and Danny’s baby is concerned, it’s not a miscarriage– it’s a chi of Shou-Lao-induced false pregnancy, and it doesn’t even happen on-panel. It’s first mentioned in a flashback in I Am An Avenger #1.
Danny: “The ultrasound, as it turns out, saw nothing. Absolutely nothing growing inside my girlfriend’s belly. In the days that followed, I pored over the Book of the Iron Fist and realized this was not unprecedented. Sometimes an Immortal Weapon’s chi can give what modern medicine calls a false positive. A glimmer of lifeforce… not a new life.”
I Am An Avenger #1, “The Books of the Iron Fist” by Duane Swierczynski, Jason Latour, and Rico Renzi
It’s tricky to argue the finer points of what dragon chi should and should not be able to do, especially considering how often it’s been treated as a Swiss Army Knife power set over the years– but Misty must have used a pregnancy test, and they don’t generally pick up on chi, so we’re a little grumpy about this plot point. (They were going to be parents! They were going to get married! Luke gave Danny the poopy diaper talk and everything!) And yes, this did end their relationship. They were both so stunned and heartbroken that they decided they needed some time apart, broke off their engagement plans, and have been separate (romantically, anyway– they’re still friends) ever since. The I Am An Avenger issue mentioned above is the main source of their break-up, though the aftereffects also bleed over into Heroes for Hire volume 3. We recommend both comics, despite the sadness involved. They’re good.
Now, on to happier things!
One major must-read Misty and Danny issue– which is about 80% cuteness and 20% plot (in a good way, in this instance)– is “Misty and Danny Forever” from the Secret Wars: Secret Love one-shot. It provides a fun glimpse of an alternate universe where they actually do get married and have a baby.
As far as the main continuity goes, since they dated for so long (over 30 years, our time), their dynamic was developed slowly, in lots of little scenes embedded throughout their shared series. Apart from the alternate universe story above, there are very few single issues dedicated solely to their relationship. But the following list contains some of our favorite/most important Misty and Danny moments, in chronological order:
Marvel Premiere #21: Misty’s introductory issue and first encounter with Danny!
Iron Fist vol. 1 #6: Misty and Danny are reunited, and continue to sort out their feelings for each other. (This process continues throughout the entirety of Iron Fist vol. 1, so we recommend reading the whole thing. It’s only 15 issues long, and quite good.)
Iron Fist vol. 1 #11-12: Danny pretends to kill Captain America to save Misty from the Wrecking Crew. Chaos and bonding ensue.
Marvel Team-Up #63-64: This is a landmark story arc for a number of reasons: It introduces Steel Serpent (Davos)’s backstory, it includes Misty and Colleen being dubbed “the Daughters of the Dragon” for the first time, and it features Misty and Danny’s first kiss.
Power Man and Iron Fist vol. 1 #66: Misty gets trapped in a magnetically-sealed vault (having a metal arm can be a pain sometimes!). Danny, Colleen, and Luke come to her rescue.
Power Man and Iron Fist vol. 1 #76: Danny and Misty team up to take down Warhawk! (And Luke and D.W. fight a vampire!)
Power Man and Iron Fist vol. 1 #79: The Doctor Who issue of Power Man and Iron Fist! (No, seriously.) Misty, now rooming with Luke’s girlfriend Harmony, runs into some dating logistics issues.
Power Man and Iron Fist vol. 1 #90: Danny gets injured, and Misty reflects on how the dangerous nature of their jobs impacts their relationship.
Power Man and Iron Fist vol. 1 #95: This is a personal favorite. Danny buys a yacht, names it after Misty, and then has no idea what to do with it. Bonding and shenanigans ensue.
Namor the Sub-Mariner vol. 1 #23-24 (not digitized): Misty, Colleen, and Namor travel to K’un-Lun to rescue Danny from the H’ylthri.
Heroes for Hire vol. 1 #13: Danny siphons all of his chi into Luke to save his life, and then Luke, Misty, Colleen, and White Tiger return the favor.
Defenders (2011) #5: A tiny scene, but still good. Misty and Danny try to have a nice, quiet dinner date.
Immortal Iron Fist: The Origin of Danny Rand: This is a retelling of Danny’s first two introductory issues (Marvel Premiere #15 and 16), with a really nice Misty and Danny scene at the beginning.
Immortal Iron Fist #16-20: Danny counts on his friends to help him defeat a creature that has killed nearly all of the previous Iron Fists. There are a bunch of nice little Misty and Danny moments in this arc, so we’re recommending the whole thing. And since we will take advantage of any opportunity to rep this series– everyone should read all of Immortal Iron Fist, because it’s fantastic.
Immortal Iron Fist #27: Misty and Danny move in together, Danny proposes, Misty reveals she’s pregnant, and Luke gives Danny the aforementioned poopy diaper talk. A very important issue.
We hope this helps. Enjoy!
