Jason landed with a barrel roll on the roof top, grinning at another smooth landing. Patrol was just about to wrap up. The most action he saw was some old lady who just needed someone to accompany her back home.
He was just about to call it a night and head home when a rustle caught his attention> Jason kept low, scanning his surroundings. He followed the sound by ear to the edge of the rooftop, and peered down into the alleyway beneath. His stance softened when he realised what he’d heard. The dumpster at the bottom was the source of the sound, someone scavenging for food, or maybe a raccoon. Deciding to investigate, Jason jumped off the roof, effortlessly gliding down to the ground and landing silently.
“Hey, is anyone there?” he called out, making sure to be as friendly and unintimidating as possible. “If you’re hungry, I know a couple places with way better food. It’ll be my treat!”
There was no response, leaving Jason to wonder if it really was just a raccoon. However, something inside of him felt differently. Well, B always said to trust his instincts, right? It wouldn’t hurt to check. Jason approached the dumpster cautiously, carefully pushing the lid open.
Jason blinked at what he saw inside. The… creature(?) was no raccoon. Jason wasn’t sure what it was. It was small, small enough to fit in the palm of his hand. It had two tiny arms gripping an apple, with its mouth gnawing on the fruit. Despite the appearance of the comparatively massive creature that was the human looking at it, the cryptid creature didn’t seem to have a care in the world. Its three big, beady eyes stared blankly in three different directions. It had a head of fluffy white fur or hair, and little wings of the same consistency, and it seemed to wear a black jumpsuit of some kind with a little blue band around its middle. Its waist ended in a wispy tail like a ghost or genie, flickering like a lamp.
Jason winced. Whatever this creature was, he was sure it didn’t belong in a dumpster. Luckily, he had just the right kind of gadget for this. The boy hooked his fingers into a compartment in his utility belt, and picked out exactly what he’d need for this situation.
An apple-flavoured candy.
It turned out it was even easier to lure out the cryptid than he thought. The moment he unwrapped the sweet, the cryptid’s three eyes all locked into its position on his glove. In a split second, the little cryptid zoomed out of the dumpster and onto his hand, gingerly biting onto the sweet, its body vibrating in a purring motion like that of a cat.
Of course, Jason was rather hungry himself, and he was sure Alfred wouldn’t mind him getting some late night junk food if it was for a case, right?
The little cryptid stayed steady in Jason’s hand as he walked to the nearby Batburger. Whatever creature it was, it was friendly enough to accept Jason’s scritches. He held the little cryptid in his right hand while the other hand carried his phone, clumsily texting people he might know for any info.
“Smile for the camera, little guy!” he cheered as he held his phone up. Danny had asked him to take a picture of the cryptid so he could get a better look. Despite his nagging for it to look up, the cryptid continued happily nibbling at the apple treat, utterly oblivious. Jason sighed and settled for a less flattering but still adorable picture of the cryptid mid-bite. The sweet was half-gone already, but thankfully they’d already arrived.
The college girl at the counter, for her part, barely blinked at the unusual sight, quickly taking Jason’s order. He left her with a fat tip on the side and retreated to a booth to await his delicious, horrifically greasy food. Once at the booth he set the cryptid down on the table, and checked his phone again.
Danny, the only one awake at this hour (ghost fighting does a number on your sleep schedule) had replied.
Danny: Hold on hold on hold on hold on u srs?!
Jason: Duh. You know what this thing is or not?
Danny: i think thats a ghost, but…
Danny: hold on brb;aslejfa;lsej;l
Jason sighed. It looked like he was going to have to wait for answers. Before long, his order was announced for pickup, and he quickly jogged over to retrieve it.
“I’ve got no idea what you are, little guy,” Jason mused, chewing on a nice, crispy chip. Absentmindedly, he held another one up to the little cryptid’s mouth, and to his surprise it took a big bite out of it, purring vivaciously. “But it wouldn’t hurt to keep you around, and if B complains, we can just say it’s for a case.”
The cryptid gave him a happy ‘merp!’ as it chewed on another chip.
