You know as an American born in the late 90s I’ve watched my country blow up foreigners on tv supposedly in the interest of national security since I was a toddler but quite frankly we live on a natural fortress of a continent with friendly nations to our north and south and have been attacked on our own soil literally two times in the past hundred years and we have military bases on every inhabited continent on earth. It’s never made sense to do these things for “national security”. It never will make sense unless you value the shareholders of weapons companies over the lives of children. And apparently a concerning amount of people do.
Any nation that decided to directly invade the United States would be stupid. Who the fuck wants to deal with the logistics of getting an army across the ocean towards a massive country with a massive amount of spy technology?
“National security” my balls. They just want violence.
I've sort of come to the conclusion that the United States wouldn't know who it was if it wasn't attacking someone and that's very sad
No. Fuck that. The average American doesn’t want war. We know what we’d be without war. Fucking Americans. The war machine doesn’t make my Christmas tamales or host my baseball games or make me participate in local democracy or protect our national parks. All of those things remain when we aren’t at war. It’s the warmongers at the top that are doing this shit. Our national identity doesn’t require war and I will not let them convince me that it does.
You're cool so no shade but The US ≠ Every US Citizen. The US national identity kinda is all about war and imperialism if you look at a history book and I truly believe yall should be accepting that to change that. Like that Zuko speech to his dad that one time. You can't go "actually the REAL usa is the regular people" cause it hasn't been so ever since Manifest Destiny.
Also, pleeeease stop using "American" to refer to the population from the country instead of the continent! 😭
My point is that we can build something better and in fact most of us do want to build something better. We don’t have to make our entire identity revolve around war and in some points in our history we’ve had an anti interventionist policy.
Also I refer to us as Americans when I’m speaking English because that’s how we refer to ourselves. In the English speaking world north and South America are generally considered to be two different continents so saying “American” to refer to the entirety of the Americas doesn’t make sense. North Americans and South Americans is more what we say. We also refer to the two continents together as the Americas. Frankly I think there’s more of an argument to be made for north and South America being separate continents than Europe and Asia.
That is not the case in every language though. When I’m speaking Spanish I do in fact use American to refer to a person from the Americas because in a lot of Spanish speaking countries America is considered to be one continent.
I respect where your request comes from, but when speaking English I’m going to continue to refer to myself as an American. People from the US irl pretty much only refer to ourselves as Americans and as far as I can tell Americans on tumblr usually only say US Americans to avoid getting comments about it. I’m personally not the type to essentially lie about how I refer to myself just to avoid getting internet comments though.
