I’ve waited SO LONG for a dune tarot.

The book, Dune Messiah, opens with the Reverend Mother consulting her dune tarot - I won’t say any more because of spoilers - but I often thought ‘why haven’t they made this, yet?’ It seemed like such an obvious thing - because it’s literally there in the book!!

So I made a list of which imagery and characters I’d use for each card using the Rider-Waite Smith system, if I was ever to author my own fan-deck.

Now I don’t have to, but I wonder how close to my list this is. We shall see!

Tuesday Witchery: Still Standing Candle Spell

A little something for when life insists on kicking your ass.

Materials

Red candle

Black peoper

Coffee grounds

Dress the candle with coffee grounds and pepper or sprinkle the two in a circle around the base of the candle.

As you light the candle, think about what's been weighing you down. Don't hide from it. Face it. Embrace it. Think about all the things you've survived before, and how you're still here.

Take a moment to focus on the flame. Feel the warmth and take comfort in it.

Say, "I remain. Again and again, I remain."

Saturday Witchery: Threshold Boundary Spell

I'm trying to stay on top of protection, warding, banishing, etc in my home, so I've been going through some of the spells, charms, and such I've collected over the last 20+ years.

Ingredients

Salt

Crushed eggshells (ground into a fine powder)

Rosemary

Pinch of dirt from your yard

Directions

Combine the ingredients. Sprinkle the mixture across the thresholds in your home.

Say, "What seeks to harm cannot settle here."

Refresh as needed.

Things that draw me to a tarot deck 😍:

Gilded edges. I’m a sucker for those, especially if holographic.

Beautiful, well-designed box. Bonus points for magnet closure. If it has a snug velvet interior with a handy ribbon then it’s god-tier.

Luxury card stock.

Purple colour palette.

A deep personal connection to a fandom deck.

Indy decks, my beloved.

Things that turn me off 😤:

Obvious cheap knock-off - avoid them like the plague!

QR code in leu of guidebook, that leads to a dodgy looking website - big clue this is a knock-off.

Obvious ai artwork.

Cheap cardstock, not much thicker than paper.

The art is digital collage of photoshopped people.

Mass market published decks, unless they really speak to me for some reason.

Generic low effort imagery for minor arcana - playing card style imagery. Nothing to inspire readings.

There are exceptions- some of my fandom decks are lazy with the minor arcana.

I do have the odd mass-market deck that was gifted to me by people I love.

But I will not compromise on the cheap knock-offs. I do not want those in my collection. I prefer to buy direct from the creator.

So far, I have two bought from Etsy. One of those I tracked down after seeing the knock-off elsewhere.

The third I did buy second-hand, but it was originally direct from the creator’s own website (and now I want more). They were all very expensive, but they are all my absolute favourites 🥰

I’m sorry if this comes across as snobbery and gatekeepery - that’s not my intention. I’m simply sharing with you my own discoveries, personal likes and dislikes in tarot cards.

Last night my husband (eeeee!) and I did an impromptu, informal blessing of his newly-bought Athame, and he agreed I could share it here.

(Our shared Altar space afterwards, with both our blades present.)

ATHAME BLESSING

Set the Altar as you wish, but you will need at minimum a Candle, dishes of Water and Salt, Incense (sandalwood is a good choice), and a Chalice/Goblet (your own personal one is acceptable if you don't have a designated Altar Goblet). If Casting a Circle, do so in your usual manner and perform this rite at the appropriate place in the Ritual. If not, simply light the candle(s) and incense.

Pick up the tool. Kiss the blade and then hold it over your heart.

GRACIOUS LADY AND MIGHTY LORD, TONIGHT I CONSECRATE THIS BLADE IN YOUR NAMES (Alternatively: THE NAMES OF _________ AND _________)

THIS BLADE, WHICH HENCEFORTH WILL PASS THROUGH ONLY AIR,

Pass the blade through the incense smoke.

FORGED IN FIRE,

Pass the blade through the Candle flame (the God candle, if applicable).

TEMPERED WITH WATER,

Dip the blade in the water dish.

FORMED OF METAL FROM THE EARTH.

Bury the blade in the salt dish. Remove it, wipe it off on the Altar Cloth, and lay the blade across the Goblet.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW, THIS ATHAME IS HEREBY DEDICATED TO MY SERVICE OF THE LORD AND LADY. SO MOTE IT BE!

Press the Athame to your heart again and take a deep breath. Kiss it one final time and place it on the Altar.

Now to appropriate rite.

Daily Oracle Spread

A simple, modern take on the Celtic cross.

Know when to take a step back. Your body, mind and spirit may need some time to restore. Is there a situation in your life that might ease if you reduce the pressure and practice more acceptance?

We all need to take time to restore. Remember, you might be rushing around just trying to deal, thinking you’re okay, but your body remembers. It will punish you if you don’t take time for yourself. Make sure that you do!

The card on the right is describes the external factors, experiences, limitations and supports that are impacting you or the situation in the real world.

This card is Beginnings:

Strike iron and flint to make fire.

Go for it. The park of fire is your life force. It lives within you.; all you must do is claim it. Say yes to a new direction and trust that you have the energy to make a fresh start.

The fact that it turned up here, as an external factor, suggests this change is one that has been thrust upon you. Welcome it, because you know what they say - a change is as good as a rest. A new beginning. Claim it!

There’s a quote from Dune that I love:

That’s what this card is telling me. Remember the legend of King Canute? Not even a king can stop the tide. We must go with the flow.

Oracle Card Reading

Deck: What’s in Your Stars? by Celia Jacobs

Three Card Spread:

First pull from a deck that was gifted to me for my birthday.

I really love how the interpretations are printed in these cards. Without wanting to sound lazy, it’s helpful to not have to pick up a guidebook and read when you’re getting to know a new deck. It makes this deck feel immediately accessible.

This is a simple 3 card spread. Past, Present and Future.

Past: Conviction.

“Forging a sword out of iron

Under extreme heat and pressure, you hammer out your ideals and beliefs. The sword is made of the powerful material of your values.

Do not let yourself be deterred from your truth.”

Wisdom and Conviction. You have a solid foundation and strong beliefs. This is a very fitting card to have in one’s past. I can’t think of any better.

Present: Create Space

“A house without walls

When the walls start to close in, you need to find wide open spaces. Dissolve the boundaries.

It may be that you need more space in your calendar or the freedom to let yourself wander.”

In our busy lives it is easy to not leave any time for yourself. You’re own creative pursuits, your own well being. We all spend far too much time online (just look at me here!) and it can feel like a prison. All of that time is much better spent on creativity. Or just going for a walk and blowing out the cobwebs. Take this as your sign to create some space for you.

Future: Mindset.

“A fox surveys the landscape

Notice the way you assess and interpret a situation. Discover a new, more objective perspective by writing in a journal, talking to a trusted counsellor or friend, reading or learning.

Most of all, find clarity by listening to your inner wisdom.”

Another card based on wisdom. Listen to your intuition, your inner voice. Write it down. It doesn’t matter how or where, just get it out (you should see my drafts here, lol). Even the act of writing it can be a cleansing relief, it doesn’t have to go anywhere else. It can give you a new perspective.

Close the notebook, journal or app, and force yourself to sleep on it. Read it again the following day and ask yourself, is this still how you feel? Or now the dust has settled, now it’s out and onto the page - do you feel different? Do you have a new perspective? Does it bother you as much as it did? Do you feel strong enough to let go and rise above? Are you wise enough to consider all the angles and perhaps alter course for a better outcome?

Above all this spread is telling me to look after myself and be more mindful in future.

I love how these cards come together. I’m looking forward to working with this deck some more.
