the start of a journey that was going to play a vital part in their story, from hopes to the heartbreak, from playing to seek revenge to falling into a trap of guilt and from the sweet fairytale kind of growing love to the disruption of faith in love - yes that's how it was going to unfold greater depths of their story...a story which was only THEIRS <3
the purple rain montage we SHOULD have gotten.. sigh
I fixed it guys
OML please stop with these i can’t be disappointed AGAIN
This makes so much sense wtf
Mike created this whole goodbye in his head based on the painting lie, he thinks Jane would say "you understand me" but it was Will who actually feels that way and he just inserted her name and now Mike thinks those are Jane's feelings.
bylers are literally the funniest people on earth, because what do you mean, WHAT DO YOU MEAN we got the OFFICIAL FINALE—the final episode, shown IN THEATRES—and bylers are still out here saying "well, this is actually still how byler happens"???? then they hand you a 500-page powerpoint of proof, and it unironically makes perfect sense.
and now our collective mass psychosis has made it to fucking forbes.
the GA talking about conformitygate is funny to me because to them it’s all about “oh the props changed colors” but to us it’s “mike wheeler is a gay man doomed for eternity and this is not a fate he deserves”
Remember the promo video for the twenty day countdown with Mike rolling the d20?
He rolled a Natural 20 but the numbers around it are all wrong.
It shouldn’t be 7, 19, 13
It should be 2, 14, and 8
But you know what does have 7, 19, and 13?
A Natural 1.
Mike rolled a natural 1. Vecna is making him think he rolled a 20. They didn’t win. THEY LOST.
MIKE (the entire town??) IS VECNA’D.
CONFORMITYGATE MIGHT BE REAL.
Welcome to dicegate.
“let’s start a new party, you and me”
It's so funny seeing conformity gate gain so much popularity on social media, knowing that the byler fans on Tumblr started it. I love being a part of such an intelligent and passionate fandom!!
Nancy Wheeler and the Miswriting of Female Independence
Do the Duffer brothers even know what an independent woman is? That’s a genuine question after what they did to Nancy Wheeler in season 5, the final season of Stranger Things.
Nancy Wheeler is first introduced as Mike’s older sister and Hawkins High’s picture-perfect girl. Her personal conflict in season one is precisely about trying to fit in and conform socially to the point where she stops acting like herself, something that’s pointed out repeatedly throughout the season, especially by her best friend, Barb.
After Barb’s disappearance, Nancy teams up with Jonathan Byers, who is dealing with his own personal and family conflicts due to Will’s sudden disappearance, to search for answers and hunt monsters, a role that sci-fi media traditionally frames as masculine. Nancy constantly pushes against these gender paradigms, proving herself to be a capable leader and an effective fighter. She earns her agency not by severing emotional bonds, but by demanding to be taken seriously within them.
Their romantic relationship that begins in S2 works because it does not erase these realities, it acknowledges them. Nancy does not shrink Jonathan, and Jonathan does not cage Nancy. They meet as equals across difference: class, gender, temperament. They challenge each other without undermining each other. Love, in their case, is not a detour from growth, it is the environment in which growth becomes possible.
female boss x male wife lol
Nancy is no longer the delicate princess who needs protecting, she becomes Nancy MotherFucker Wheeler.
The relationship dynamics in seasons three and four are realistic and make sense for who they are as a couple. And yet, the Duffer brothers repeatedly frame Nancy as confused, subtly implying to the general audience that she might still be reconsidering her feelings for her ex-boyfriend, Steve Harrington.
In season five, she’s even more badass. She literally shuts Steve down. And then, out of nowhere, she and Jonathan break up to supposedly serve Nancy’s “independence arc.”
But she’s already independent!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nancy’s independence is flattened into solitude. Jonathan’s responsibility is punished rather than transformed. The complexity of their bond, one that held space for ambition and care, is reduced to a false binary.
Do the Duffer brothers know that women can be independent and have a boyfriend who loves them, respects them, and treats them as an equal, despite differences in gender and class? Have they ever actually talked to a woman in their lives? (Their mum doesn't count.)
Because nothing about this choice reflects independence. It reflects a shallow, outdated idea of feminism, and a fundamental misunderstanding of their own character.
In doing so, the series abandons its own thematic foundations. Stranger Things once understood that love was not a distraction from survival, but its engine. That partnership could exist without hierarchy. That a woman could be formidable without being alone. That a boy shaped by sacrifice deserved rest, not narrative abandonment.
By the final season, none of that remains.
Nancy is not made more independent by losing Jonathan. Jonathan is not made freer by losing Nancy.
They are simply stripped of the relationship that once allowed both characters to be fully seen.
And that isn’t realism. Just bad writing.
anyway, shoot me if i ever have faith in white straight men again.
no like I’m literally losing my mind. They gave Mike, THEIR MAIN CHARACTER, the saddest ending humanly possible and assassinated his character oh my gooood.
He barely had any plot relevance other than asking el/will if they were okay.
He was relevant in volume 1 and then NOTHING!!
THE PAINTING. Jesus Christ, the painting. I was expecting them to give him a shield and sword so he’d look like Mike the brave. But NOOOO they gave it to Dustin!!! (He’s a sweet angel but C’MON give Mike SOMETHING). They gave him a flare gun which, in the grand scheme of things, had ZERO impact on the mind flayer/vecna
Also he’s canonically stupid bc he never acknowledged/realized that el did NOT commission this fucking painting
He didn’t come up with ANY part of the final plan.
Holly had a bigger leader role in the finale!!!
he didn’t even HELP get holly out at the end which would’ve been such a satisfying moment since giving her holly the heroic helped her be brave and run from vecna. So it was HIS influence that saved her + helped her lead the kids
What happened to Mike being THE HEART?????
el literally kills herself and she pulls him in to her mind to say her final words. She says I LOVE YOU and he DOESNT say it back. To his dying GIRLFRIEND (???). Like baby we got over this in season 4?? Or we were supposed to?? Like c’mon THIS is your endgame ship????? He can’t say I love you when she’s DYING!!!! Which makes him look like a terrible boyfriend (one of the few things his character is defined by bc, again, they gave him no other plot. And we’re reminded of this when el is the only flashback that shows up for him when Joyce is decapitating vecna when, granted, vecna did SO much to him, his family, and other friends).
El also says that he’s the only person that understands her when we’ve been shown time and time again that they always fight and he very clearly does NOT understand her so yaay let’s remind the audience that he’s a terrible boyfriend
And on top of that a Terrible kisser bc that kiss scene had negative chemistry ???
Then poor boy has to be retraumatized by her death (bc this is EXACLTY what happened in season 1) and live with eternal guilt to the point of diving head first into DELUSION and ruminating for 18 months to find a way to cope and convince himself that el is alive. Like he is D E L U D E D. HOW does that seem like a positive ending ?????
And one of, if not the biggest, crime: he is STILL in the closet
jane hopper was 16 when she sacrificed her entire life because she believed she couldn’t be free otherwise. the duffers wrote that horrific ending for a scared 16 year old who only ever wanted to be loved, who didn’t want to be a monster.
I'm so pissed off at the way the Duffers are talking about Jane's ending like she wasn't her own person and instead just a magical being from childhood that the rest of the party needs to get over.
i think what really gets me is they wrote a fucking tragic ending but presented it as a happy one. it seems clear to me they wrote mike as a closeted gay man. even till the very end, there is subtext about mike and about byler. but will ends up in a bar with a random boy and mike ends up alone in his room with the painting from will on the wall. he talks about a story he can never tell and cries putting his binder next to will's. he never said i love you back to his girlfriend before she died. it's fucking tragic, but they couldn't even commit to that. it's wrapped up in looking like a happy ending to everyone but the queer people who devoted our time, love, and attention to their story. we are left devastated in a way nobody else can see, as if that doesn't already happen to queer people enough.
Can't believe they wasted so much time on Byler in season 4 like you should have just built mlvn up in that time and we could have seen Will's sexuality being discussed with LITERALLY anyone else, anyone from California and even THAT would have been more satisfying than whatever the fuck this is
