What causes orbital paths of objects in space to be ovals?
If a physicist knows how big something is, its speed, and direction, the path the object takes can be determined by plugging those values in a simple equation. The ellipse shaped-path that we typically see is simply because of the relationship between mass, speed, and the force of gravity acting upon it. Gravity and inertia (the objects tendency to remain at rest) will usually completely determine the path of the object.
Again, I’m a biochemist by trade, so take my words with a grain of salt.
