It kind of really confuses me when Barbie commercials have little girls dressing them up and brushing their hair Like no Barbie is not about fashion. Barbie is about collecting as many dolls as you can get your grubby 7 year old hands on and dominating the living room with your expansive empire of plastic women. Barbie is about creating intricate social structures and spicy inter-family conflicts between town house residents. Barbie is about formulating complex back stories for tortured Ken dolls with emotional scars. It’s about creating near-sadistic dramatic plot twists that split up marriages and cause that one Barbie you really dislike to be ceremoniously tossed down the stairs in order to be offed by the jealous ex-wife of Ken #4.

When he was in middle school, he was the captain of the tennis club. And when he was in high school, he was in the martial arts club.

In middle school, he turned in a model of a toilet made out of clay to his art teacher.

He had wanted to be a dessert/confectionery maker.

Because of his older brother’s suggestion, he entered the seiyuu world.

His whole family has a history of being civil servants, generation after generation, and as of last year (2013), his father still doesn’t know that Sugitan is working as a seiyuu.

He’s well known to be super polite, calling even those younger than him / his kouhais with honorifics.

A lot of seiyuus attest that though he might be reaaally weird and out of this world at times, Sugitan is really super kind and thoughtful of others, whether they be his close friends or not.

Seiyuus with a reputation of being do-S, like Yusa Kouji, Kamiya Hiroshi, Toriumi Kousuke and even Morikawa Toshiyuki all seem to love to dote on him.

Sugitan calls Kamiya as “Nii-san” and Kamiya himself says that he’s weak against Sugita, that if Sugita asks him out to eat or invites him somewhere, he has little defense against him and almost always ends up saying yes, and in the rare times that he can’t say yes, he says that he feels really guilty about it afterwards. LOL

As for Yucchi, he likes giving gifts to Sugita, even offering to walk him home from the studio once and is generally very nice to him, which, knowing Yucchi’s reputation as the king of all do-S, is a big thing indeed.

And not only seiyuus, but also mangakas and illustrators, like Sorachi Hideaki, Hoshino Lily and Shirow Miwa, and even game makers, like Kojima Hideo of Konami all like to dote on him too. Kojima even calls him “Kazu-kun”.

Continuing the super fun stories of seiyuus and their encounters with the police, Sugitan, along with Fukuyama Jun, were once walking together along Kabuki-cho at night, having come from a recording session. And when they passed by the police box, they were stopped by the police on duty and they were made to face the wall and place their hands against it and they were thoroughly searched, not only their bags but also their clothes. Apparently it took quite a long time and Jun was saying that their situation is kind of exciting. lol In the end, the policeman told them that there was a young guy wielding a knife was committing crimes in the area, and the both of them sort of filled the profile for the perps.

If it isn’t obvious enough, him and Nakamura Yuuichi are really BFFs to the core lol. They met during an audition for an anime when they were starting as seiyuus, and when Sugitan was still living in his family’s home in all the way in Saitama, he used to stay over at Nakamura’s place in Tokyo so he can be closer when getting to work.

Sugita has a rep of talking about Nakamura a lot, even in things not even concerning Nakamura. LOL Even when he first appeared as a guest in Kamiya and OnoD’s Dear Girl Stories, he introduced himself as Nakamura Yuuichi.

When he was being teased back then for having only anime stuff as a wallpaper for his phone, he took a picture of Nakamura and made it his phone’s wallpaper. And he’d brag to anyone who’d ever see his phone that Nakamura is very handsome. LOL

Sugita really likes to talk about Nakamura to the point that when Nakamura meets for the first time, any of Sugita’s acquaintances, they would be like “Oh, so you are that Nakamura-kun!?”

Yasumoto Hiroki always complains that he always ends up going over to Sugita’s house and cooking for him and their other friends, (which may include Nakamura, Mafia Kajita, Shimono Hiro, Terashima Takuma, Kaji Yuuki, OnoD etc….)

Last year, it seems his favorite person was Hosoya Yoshimasa, calling him “Posoya-kun”, going as far as tweeting stuff like, “Hosoya-kun is cute” or “I’d want a Hosoyan-kun figure that has a feature that can make it sing!”

That one time his dress fell down and his chest got exposed lol

A little rant about the Mystic Messenger 1.4.2 update

So today Cheritz updated the game for Android users and guess what? A lot of players’ accounts got banned lol. Also some were complaining about the upcoming 5HG charge to using the save slots.

Immature kids started cursing and yelling at Cheritz, calling them money-grubbers and awful stuff.

I’m an Android app developer myself, and (sorry not sorry) I can’t believe how dumb some people can be. You expect us to create a big app/game that takes us thousands of hours to make completely free?!

Chill out. Players can still play for free, and yes, it’ll be really tiresome and tiring but come on, what kind of freemium/free-to-play game isn’t?

I’ve been playing a lot of online mobile games for years, all I can say is if you want to play the whole game without spending money you <b>have to dedicate a lot of time to it.</b>

Sad truth, but that’s how it works.

Examples:

- Love Live School Idol Festival: I’ve been playing this (and still am) for two years and I haven’t spent a single cent yet. But I have a pretty above average team/cards and can tier on events. But how? Just play the game by grinding.

- Solmare’s Shall we date games is no difference. If you want to rank in the events (or at least get the event items) without spending you have to save up every item you can get and use them wisely.

- DON’T GET ME STARTED ON ARITHMETIC AND VOLTAGE’S FREE-TO-PLAY OTOME GAMES.

Imo, Mystic Messenger is a pretty freemium game. Yes I’m aware that a lot of players don’t have hourglasses that’s why they cheated, but didn’t Cheritz announce in an earlier post that they are planning to add more ways to get free HG?

Chill out everyone. Btw, if you have bought anything in-game (calling cards, hourglasses) and got banned because you did the time change bug after the 1.4.2 update, try emailing Cheritz and who knows, maybe they could do something for you.

Btw, if the game has now become impossible/unmanageable to play for you because of *various reasons blah blah blah*, maybe it’s time for you to quit? Or at least take a break and play only during the holidays or vacation.

Making a Living Making Anime

Shirobako is a comedy about working in the anime industry that’s received high praise from fans. Something else that has fans talking is how the characters in Shirobako have canonical income:

As you can see Ema, the animator, doesn’t make much compared to her peers. The character of Shizuka in Shirobako works as a waitress, in addition to a part time voice actress, and makes almost double what Ema makes.

American fans have been shocked to find out that these numbers from Shirobako are close to reality and those who actually animate the shows we love are very likely to live in poverty. In fact, the average annual income for an entry-level was reported to be equivalent to $9,200 along with the average work day of 11 hours, no vacations.

Why is this?

Animators often work under contract so minimum wage laws and other things like income from government welfare don’t actually apply to them. The wages are so low because animators are not paid by the hour, they’re paid by the drawing. This policy has been common place in the anime industry for decades and wasn’t as problematic in the past. Back in the day, animators could manage to draw enough to make ends meet. Older anime art styles had fewer lines per character, and rough work was much more acceptable. Now both employers and fans demand more detailed and higher quality drawings that take longer to draw. If an animator doesn’t preform to standard then they have to do a reshoot, meaning they redraw the inadequate frames for no extra pay.

Not to mention these wages have to compete with the even cheaper cost of labor that outsourcing offers. Almost all anime is partially outsourced to countries like South Korea, leaving Japanese animators with fewer jobs and lower wages.

Just how bad is it?

The long hours and low pay results in a multitude of problems. It discourages those who are new to the industry to stay in the industry. While Ema in Shirobako has a supportive network and friendly work environment, it is actually one of places where Shirobako in not entirely accurate. Animators are not put in as happy-go-lucky environments as they were in Shirobako. Animators will often jump from studio to studio looking for a better fit and higher wages, frequently concluding to simply exit the industry.

This is bad for the industry as a whole because if it can’t hold on to young talent then the industry can’t secure a work force for the future.

It’s not just the anime industry either, Japan has been struggling with rising poverty since the 80s. So low wages, long hours and jumping from job to job is a familiar story for much of Japan’s young labor force.

However, the working conditions for animators have had the spotlight on them for being so bad. Remember, 11 hour work days, no vacations, for less than minimum wage. In addition to undergoing exhaustion and illness due to the long hours and stress, living expensiveness take their own toll as well. Most animation studios are in Tokyo, one of the most expensive cities in the world, so the cost of living for animators can be so strenuous that animators go without food.

Is it that bad everywhere?

No. Some anime studios do pay actual salaries, and as animators gain experience and rise through the ranks their pay also rises. A key animator, also known as a genga, earns an average annual income of about $23,000 and work an average of 10 hours a day.

However, the fact that new animators have such a huge barricade blocking their chances to actually make a living doing what they love is very dis-heartening both to fans of anime and those aspiring to create it.

What can be done about this?

Well, if you’re Japanese then you can lobby to broaden minimum wage laws or something of that nature. But as for all of us on the other side of the Pacific the answer is that we can’t do much, at least not directly.

It doesn’t help that many American anime fans don’t watch anime through legal means. Though, even the money making its way to Japan is not guaranteed to be significantly disturbed to the animators, it’s still better to legally consume anime so that studios will have more money to spread around.

Crowd funding has made an impact in a few ways. The Anime Mirai or Young Animators Training Project is a government funded project to help new animators train and establish themselves the industry. While most of the works produced from this project never see a legal release in America, the popular Little Witch Academia was available for streaming for a time and successfully kickstarted a sequel so that the then newly formed studio and its staff could produce the same quality of animation without the government funding.

While fans paying directly to see a specific title come to fruition is not a solution for the industry at large, other projects like the Animator Dormatory by NPO Animator Supporter provide a more long-term aid to animators. The project has had 2 successful Indiegogo campaigns that provided cheap housing for young animators in Tokyo so that they could focus on their work without sacrificing their standard of living.

The easiest method is simply remaining aware and talking about the subject matter. Shirobako’s salaries have caused lots of chatter on social media and given anime news outlets a chance to broach the topic. The more people who speak out on the topic the more likely change will ensue.
