You know, as a remote work English-Spanish interpreter, a big part of my job is hearing a doctor say something like "we're gonna need your help interpreter, because I can only say like 2 words in Spanish hahaha" and laugh along at the lighthearted self-inflicted jab the doctor is saying about their own lack of abilities and trying to push back on the thoughts that of course you can laugh it off, because this really isn't relevant to you. You can live a normal life knowing only 2 words in Spanish and that is never, ever going to affect your life. While I had to learn your language at age 10 because, even though I live in an exclusively Spanish-speaking country, virtually all media and hobbies I engaged with as a kid were made by people like Toby Fox who don't give a single shit about translating their works into Spanish because people from South America don't matter and Spanish doesn't matter, because you learn as a kid that the United States is the best and most important country in the world and you have to learn to speak their language because even though more people in the world speak Spanish than English, the whole world caters to English because that's the language of the United States of America so therefore that's the important one so therefore we have to bust our ass off in English class to open Job Opportunities With The Important Americans and understand what you're saying with that fucking accent you insist you don't have while you were drawing a realistic eye in Spanish class while learning your 2 words that were enough to give you the extra credit you used to get a fucking doctorate in medicine and yet still managing to not learn a 3rd word of the language that's spoken in one of the countries you border. And none of that matters because you don't need to learn Spanish because Spanish doesn't matter and only English matters because in the extremely rare happenstance that your patient only speaks Spanish you can just call me to provide cheap labour that is being paid a 10th of what's it's worth because I'm working from South America and labour from South America doesn't matter while you get mad at me for not translating fast enough for you. And don't feel bad about me cuz it's okay because I'm doing a half-assed job at it since I'm only half-paying attention to the conversation while using the rest of my brain to look at memes on the internet that were made by Spanish speakers in Spanish only for some gringo to add "this transcends language barriers" as they laugh and laugh at how unimportant Spanish is and they can just guesstimate the meaning of the language through cognates and the 2 Spanish words they learnt all the way back in high school because they didn't need any more to pass because Spanish doesn't matter and you were born with the advantage of being surrounded by the One Language That Matters as a baby so you didn't even need to consciously learn that one. So you can just laugh it off. And I laugh along with you, because I'm there to provide the service of not having to know my language. An ability I acquired by being forced to learn yours.
