It’s been a while.
It’s been a while since I last posted on this blog. The last time I posted this I was a third year medical student. I’m now a fifth year student and so much has happened.
I’m now in my internado year, which has been a little different than normal because of the Covid-19 pandemic. I’m still trying to get the best out of it.
I decided to start posting here again to keep myself accountable and make sure I’m studying frequently and developing my clinical skills. So in order to hit the ground running I’ll try the 100 days of productivity challenge.
I hope anyone who has come across this blog for the last couple of years is doing well. :)
5 Habits You Should Cultivate as a Student
On this series of habits, I’d like to share some habits we as students should cultivate despite our hectic student lives.
Make lists
- Before starting the day off, make a list of things to do for the day ahead. Split your tasks into 3 categories: Academic, Personal, and Work (e.g: replying to comments on Tumblr, etc).
Listen to podcasts
- Waiting for the bus? Stuck in a traffic jam? Grab this opportunity to listen to an educational podcast, be it on Spotify, Audible, etc. I try listening to BBC Learning English’s 6 Minute English daily to improve my vocabulary. Check them out here!
Social media detox
- Try not to use your phone 1 hour after waking up. Instead, listen to podcasts. It’s way more beneficial then scrolling mindlessly through your Instagram, or whatever.
Plan ahead
- Keeping a planner is helpful and useful as it helps you get your life together. As I’ve mentioned, make lists and also monthly overviews. This will give you a clear and focused mind.
Workout
- After a whole day of school, remember to s t r e t c h. Do some simple exercises, like stretching your legs. You’ll feel more refreshed and energised.
me: i’m gonna be productive today! gonna do shit!!! here i go!!!!!!!!

The stress is reeeeal right now. I’m taking shifts at work every day. Spend my afternoons and evenings trying to catch up with physiology and finding an appartment for when I move this fall. In this I’m constantly reminding myself I am so lucky that I have a well-paid job and that I get to educate myself - I really hit the jackpot looking at it that way. :)
that’s the Prometheus atlas and Guyton’s Textbook of Medical Physiology on one of the chapters on renal physiology. Two of my favourite books, I’d like to say I’d know them anywhere haha
Terra Nova by C. Alessandra Colaianni, M.D.
This "Perspective" article just came out this month on NEJM. It was a wonderful read.Â
Here's a part of the article that really resonated with meÂ
"Reconciling these truths is not a trifling exercise: I’m torn between envying my friends with vibrant lives outside the hospital and being disappointed in myself for not studying harder, working longer, committing more."Â
Here's the link to the article in case any one of you is interested:Â https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1808753

4.7.18 Another look back to the snow. I’m feeling a bit wistful and sad today, I want to sing about being in love and confused about my mental health. Thinking a lot about my past, and how sometimes when I talk about it to people who weren’t involved, I realise how much I’ve been through. But at the same time, those memories and experiences have made me who I am, and I can let them tear me down or I can remember how strong I can be.Â
you’re too young to let the world break you
10.25.18 // starry night? or breast cancer cells that have spread to bone? nuclei of proliferating tumor cells are stained with Ki67 (brown), and counterstained with methyl green.Â
uni just started and i am so busy.. there is so much work to do! also i’m really upset that the lighting in my dorm is really bad, its a struggle :(
Hypertension
Tomorrow I have a test on hypertension. So I’ll do a quick review of essential concepts:
It’s defined as the existence of a high blood pressure value that increases the risk of patients suffering from organic lesions in various vascular beds and the treatment used decreases the mortality and morbidity of high blood pressure
A normal blood pressure it is considered less than 120 systolic pressure and less than 80 diastolic (120/80 mmHg).Â
Prehypertension is considered in the ranges of 120-139 systolic pressure and 80-90 diastolic pressure.
Hypertension in state one systolic pressure between 140-159 and diastolic pressure 90-99
Hypertension in state two is considered a systolic blood pressure greater or equal to 160 and a diastolic blood pressure greater or equal to 100.
Hypertensive emergency it is a considerable increase in blood pressure with a diastolic blood pressure greater than 120. Within this cathetogy we can find accelerated hypertension which is defined as a systolic pressure greater than 120 and a diastolic pressure greater than 130. And hypertension malignancy that is directly related to papilledema. REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION
are you me? just yesterday i had a test on the renin-angiotensin system, the treatment of hypertension, angina & heart failure haha
aaah, i just realized i posted using my other blog. my bad!Â

Decided to spend this awfully dreary, rainy day in the library which I’ve come to love spending time in. Granted it’s definitely not the most aesthetically pleasing library but I’m always so productive so that’s what counts right?! Trying to get ahead in my notes that way it’s a bit easier when to comes to studying for my next exam.🤓📚📓 Wishing everyone a happy Thursday!
harper’s biochemistry! this book brings back memories
Really sick of seeing people bashing scientific studies by saying “yeah obviously! I didn’t need a study to tell me that!” and yeah even if the results are obvious there’s an important reason that that scientific study is still important.
Anecdotal evidence (even if it is extremely convincing) is not proper evidence in science. Having proper studies and scientific evidence to back-up what we already know to be obvious is important.
also, political change in the form of bills or government funding are stronger with well-studied and published data (well…. usually……)
today i had my third and last basic immunology exam. it’s somewhat bitter-sweet finishing a course you truly enjoy. dr. velázquez was a great teacher and is truly an inspiration!
