The Rubicon Theory of War // Plutarch's Life of Caesar // Seutonius' Lives of the 12 Caesars // Treason - 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica
You in her dms im in eternal purgatory #the cycle
You know its a crack theory but i just realized Dayne Shunning stocks may be up like never before because if Ashara canonically didn't sleep with Ned Stark why the FUCK is Edric Dayne nicknamed "Ned" after the Stark who killed Arthur. Why not Brandon!! George explain!!!11!!
Look I get that they're probably just more relevant to the Northern plot of the story but I just find it weird that Allyria is betrothed to a marcher lord and there's no mention of Ned being invited to the water gardens....also Ned being named after the man who KILLED Arthur.....there is so much anger at and within that family GRRM explain....
Oh AND no mention is made of them being in the host Doran is amassing at the princes pass or the boneway in the Arianne winds of winter chapter.......
It's possible that they're there and not mentioned OR the shunning of house dayne has continued and been worsened by Darkstar
AND AND they aren't part of any of the families mentioned by Doran to be helping him delay Balon Swanns arrival at Sunspear through feasting and games.....the Dayne Ostracism theory is so real to me and like 5 other people
Really great tags here from @allyriadayne
Love the point about how Allyria being betrothed to one man and her nephew also squiring for that same man reeks of desperation because it's so true and it reminds me of another high status house that's fallen on hard times - the Westerlings.
The Westerlings are (like the Daynes) a first men house that fell on hard times after centuries of being high enough on the ladder of nobility to regularly marry off their daughters to kings (and presumably have equally prestigious positions for their sons - Harold Westerling was LC of the Kingsguard under Viserys I). But they've had this slow financial decline that's also led to a loss of status. By the time the books come around and Jeyne Westerling marries Robb both her brothers join up with Robb.
Rollam is Robb's squire, and Raynald joins Robb's retinue. Now of course this could be because Sybell was playing the long game and using her sons to pretend the Westerlings were all in for Robb's cause but I think that even if this is the case it's telling that both her sons were even *around* (or able to be recalled easily) to join up with Robb. Imo I think it points to the fact that either they hadn't been given positions as squires OR they'd been allowed to squire for local families/relatives who were similarly low in status and therefore were fairly easy to get back without having to care much about giving offence.
And if u connect this back to the Daynes it's wild!!! The Daynes are an OLD house with a Stark-level mythos around them!!! They used to be KINGS!!! And now they've possibly been reduced to using the same strategies as social climbing, arriviste, new money Sybell Spicer? In the span of ONE generation!?!? WHAT IS GOING ON GEORGE!!!

chronic pain diagnoses are all like yeah we don't know what this is or why it happens. we also don't know how to treat it. good luck out there soldier
The pathologization of anger needs to be talked about. What do you mean my therapist is telling me that there’s something “chemically wrong” with me because I am still angry about my mom DYING OF COVID.
of course I’m still angry? My mom and 1.3 million other Americans are dead and you want me to shoot sunshine out of my ass about it?
“But It’s been 3 years since she died, you have complex grief” yeah and she was on a ventilator for 11 days and she kept writing “I am scared” and “I don’t want to die” on a notepad over and over again. While you were still going out unmasked and unvaccinated and coughing all over each other, I was living a nightmare I couldn’t fucking wake up from. And every single day I’m reminded of it in the form of “haha wasn’t the pandemic such a wacky time haha” and “I’m not getting a booster you can’t make me 🤪 (nobody asked)” and “it’s not real they made the numbers up!!!”
“You’re not coping” Ok here’s the deal; I’ll stop feeling this anger when we have a national memorial (we don’t) or a cdc equipped to stop it from happening again (we don’t) or a population that takes a deadly disease seriously BEFORE it effects them personally (WE DON’T!)
until then, I’m pretty sure my anger is A COMPLETELY NORMAL HUMAN REACTION given the facts at hand

Die temu ad die
Hmm. Accidentally looks like latin.
It accidentally is latin
Accidental latin is my new favourite thing.
Found this in the margins of a medieval manuscript.
This is a very charming illustration and I do approve of Accidental Latin, but unfortunately, that is not what this (Fake) Accidental Latin actually says. Google Translate seems to think "temu" is identical to "timor" (infinitive, "to fear"), which would then be conjugated in first-person singular as "timeo" ("I fear"). "Temu" is not a word in Latin. So that is a very weird leap on Google Translate's part to turn gibberish into... something vaguely etymologically similar sounding? Hmm.
Next, "die" does mean "day," though nominative singular is "dies," i.e. "dies irae." It could be conjugated "die" if it was in ablative or locative case, but "die ad die" would mean something more like "day to day." "Ad" is in a "to" direction and "ab" is from, i.e. "ab urbis," and ablative case is used to indicate the movement of a thing. In short, "by" is not really a way to translate "ad"; we might want "per" here? (Through, by means of, etc.)
Not to mention, it would be weird to put one "die" at the start and another at the end The verb also usually goes at the end in Latin sentences, just for that extra bit of fun. So yes, in short, this is not actually Latin, and Google Translate is very bad at Latin in particular. Nonetheless, still charming.
@theshitpostcalligrapher
Agree, @qqueenofhades, except on the matter of breaking “die ad die” apart. It’s a common structure in poetic and oratorical Latin to jam one phrase in the middle of another. I can’t think of an example exactly parallel to this construction, but I could believe a Roman poet would write it!
Ah, that is true. My Latin is of the reading-medieval-documents (particularly charters and/or chronicles) variety, where the sentence and usage structures are often more formulaic and there is less poetic license to move words around. There is obviously far less fixity for word order in Latin, since the conjugations explain how they grammatically relate to each other rather than placement in the sentence. (Coincidentally, this is why I used to say that the best feeling in the world was walking past a Latin classroom and not having to go inside it. Ahem.)
So yes: true that poetical Latin might be more at liberty to split the "die"-s up that far, though "timeo" (verb) is still more likely in most cases to go at the end, which would place them together anyway ("die ad die timeo," "day to day I fear" if translated in strict word order, which would make sense to an English speaker and sound more poetic anyway). Keep in mind, however, that my Latin is a) fairly rusty and b) mostly used for said formulaic legal document reading rather than freeform verse, so don't super-hard quote me on this.
I saw that ablative “die” and that final -u on “temu” and thought of the ablative supine (as in “mirabile dictu”) but as you observe, there isn’t a verb that “temu” could be, and then also, the ablative supine requires an adjective, as far as I know.
But perhaps “temu” is a hapax legomenon (in which case we would need the rest of the text to gloss it) or a scribal error for temeratu, from temero, “I defile or disgrace”. In that case, and in true Tumblr form, I might translate it as “daily I disgrace, in the manner of the day”, with some errors attributable to the scribe.
....oh my god. You might be a genius. Because what else does Tumblr do but daily disgrace [itself, oneself, and/or numerous others] in the manner of the day, and make numerous scribal errors.
how dare you say we error on the scribes
this is what happens when you buy your latin on temu
i might be completely misunderstanding the spoilers, so feel free to correct me.
am i reading this right? from what i've gathered, it seems like elia and rhaegar already had a plan to overthrow aerys and elia actually pretty ambitious about securing power for house martell and her children? and then she got pissed because rhaegar basically derailed their entire plan by running off with lyanna?
And if so, did elia eventually accept their relationship because she had no choice, or was it more like "fine, whatever, just get back to the fucking plan and overthrow your father". that's the impression i got from the spoilers, but i'm not sure if i'm interpreting them correctly.
Anon you and me have the same question. Ive seen 2 totally different interpretations of Elia from 2 people who saw the play with their own eyes and i respect both of their takes usually.
One says that Elia was well represented and an excellent figure in the play who was tough and ambitious and the other says that they feel like what Elia went through wasnt given enough emotional weight and was cheapened.
Given the totally contradictory views im just going to have to withhold judgement until i can get my hands on a copy of the script or they release a recording of the play and will need to wait to form my own opinions.
Until then everything i like is canon and everything i dont like is ridiculous fanfiction on par with time travelling tyrion
How do you think Eliashara being (possibly?) canon affects the Dayne shunning theory? Stocks for the theory are up or down?
Ok SAUR dayne shunning theory has always been stocks down for me because i dont think GRRM thinks of Dorne or the Daynes that way. Which is weird because historically they have seemed to be pretty unified with the rest of the dornish in their collective aims??? (Eg see ser joffrey dayne sacking Old Town). The modern daynes tho seem like they are very linked to the North in the story which is. A choice.
However in my aus dayne shunning stocks are UP i bet its even more fucked up from Elder Brother Daynes perspective because his mum fucked everything up and then he kind of clawed his way back up and then his 2 siblings decimate the Dayne reputation AGAIN because of Lyanna and Rhaegar.
Elder brother dayne hearing the news that ashara leaked info to ned in a fit of fury after he JUST found out arthur was helping and keeping lyanna in dorne
