Concert Review: Katy Perry
Recently, I was lucky enough to attend a Katy Perry concert. This was the final of three sold-out shows in Toronto. Keep reading to find out what I really think and whether it's really worth the ticket price. One thing I keep reading about Katy Perry from the critics is that she’s not talented and it’s just the big production that keeps her in the business. I will definitely be addressing that critique.
The first thing that strikes you walking into the ACC is the mixed fan base. You couldn’t pinpoint it and say her fan base only consists of kids and teens. There were young kids attending their first concerts and grandparents too. That’s one thing that sets Katy apart from many of the other “pop stars” in the industry. Majority of the current pop stars have a target fan base but Katy’s started with her since the beginning and she keeps adding more fans of all ages along the way.
The Opening Acts: Ferras and Capital Cities
The opening acts were Ferras and Capital Cities. Life for opening acts is always tough since the crowd usually aren't as excited as they are for the main act. Ferras hit the stage around 7 pm, which I feel was a little too early since a lot of people were still trying to get through the crowds. I unfortunately missed his set and was really disappointed because his self-titled EP is really good and I would’ve loved to hear how his music translates to the stage. Capital Cities did a fantastic job trying to get the crowd involved and really hyped everyone up for Katy Perry. They are an incredibly talented band and definitely kept everyone entertained. My favourite part of their set was when they asked the crowd to take out their cellphones and shine the flashlights in the air. There was a fair sized gap between the two opening acts so I think it would be better to push back Ferras’ set to 7:15/7:30. That will give the crowd more of an opportunity to see the insanely talented Ferras.
There was another gap and the crowd started getting more and more excited as the Prism started getting built in the center of the stage. At around 9:15 pm, it was time for Katy Perry to start and the crowd roared with excitement.
Katy Perry started off the show by emerging from a Prism at the center of the stage and she began singing Roar. The thing that struck me from the beginning of the show all the way to the end was how massive the production was for this concert. Katy Perry took no shortcuts and made sure that every single person on stage was featured in their own special way. No matter where you looked there was always something going on and it makes you feel like you want to go to the show again just to see what you missed the first time around. Everyone from the band to the dancers to the backup singers were fully incorporated into the show and the massive stage was used so well it made it seem small!
One of my favourite parts of the show was the acoustic set. This is when Katy connected with the crowd and really connected with every individual in the venue. She shared a bit of her story and told about she feels the weight of expectation at times. It wasn't just filler as the stage was setup or just random words thanking the fans. It was genuine. This all led to one of her most emotional songs, By the Grace of GOD.
I said I would answer the critiques about it just being about the big production with no substance and no talent. I strongly disagree. It was during the acoustic set where Katy really shined. She has the talent and it's not just about the big productions. She has songs that show her faith in GOD, and talks about how people should believe in themselves. Her songs are not just meaningless fluff. Before her performance of "Love Me", a song about loving and valuing yourself, she told the crowd how important it was to value and love themselves.
The transition between the acoustic set was filled with a lot of dancing and showcased the phenomenal dancers on tour with Katy. A lot of these dancers were on Katy's California Dreams tour and have become superstars in their own rights, deservedly so. Katy Perry's final performances of the night were filled with so much energy that you just didn't want it to end. She got close to the crowd during Birthday and ended the show with a giant bang.
The only thing that was a slight negative point was a slight issue with the sound system that made it a little hard to understand what was being said and sung at times. This was especially apparent during the chorus of Wide Awake. However, it seemed to get better as the show progressed and overall it was a phenomenal show. The price of the show made many raise their eyebrows, $160, but overall it was totally worth it. The stage design, lavish production, costume changes and the overall show themes and atmosphere were phenomenal. The production cost of the tour itself and the amount of value you get back from this show more than covers the ticket price.
I would love to see the show again and would definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Katy Perry, her music or just a great show! I really hope Katy makes a concert DVD for this tour!
