okay so when i wrote that i tag i did believe that there was a readily available modern english translation but ive tried looking for one and it appears that that isn’t true :| if you have a way to access it, i know this book has a modern english translation
regardless, here’s a link to a copy of the middle english text which seems well-glossed. and here’s a link to the METS version which is a little more authoritative but less well-glossed imo bc of formatting issues with the site (but there is also an introduction to the text on the METS website). this all is relatively high middle english, so it should be readable with some effort
anyway sir gowther is sort of like the middle english answer to the robert the devil story!! i perhaps wouldn’t call it arthuriana in the traditional sense but it does follow a knight who is the son of a devil and a noblewoman (making him merlin’s half brother—the text makes a comment on this, which is its only tenuous connection to the arthurian canon) and its arguably an example of medieval popular fiction; i’ve done a little research on it before and some folks argue that it’s largely derivative of similar works from the period—i oscillate on this opinion but largely agree because it’s like…not the tightest or most eloquent verse ever and it’s hard to get a certain date on the story, so it probably is building on the robert the devil legend and other folk stories that came before. i also just genuinely think it’s a quite fun text for a couple different reasons—it raises lots of questions about personhood and the ability to access humanity (who is allowed to be “human”?)!! but i don’t want to ramble & i hope you have fun reading :)
im sending my family the pictures i took at the museum of medieval torture instruments but i forgot to take pictures where my gondola plush wasnt being tortured so this is what all the pictures look like
researching medieval murder ballads and here it says the punishment for fratricide was to leave the murderer to the mercy of the ocean. 👀

Guys! Athena’s beauty routine finally dropped! source
So here’s what you have to do if you want to have perfect skin while keeping that alpha grindset:
Wash your horses first even if you are caked in blood and dirt
Wash your mighty arms
Don’t use Perfume, rub yourself with manly olive oil only
Don’t do make up, don’t even look into a mirror, you already have a chiseled jaw and flashing eyes
Instead run 120 laps around a racetrack to give your face a natural blush
Comb your hair with a golden comb
Now you’re ready to compete for a golden apple
