Writing is a process that often undergoes heavy edits… that includes responding to feedback.

I had no idea this post would resonate with so many people. I let my vitriol surrounding several comments I received on a recent update get to me and it spilled out into .gif form and it’s now morphed into the most widely shared thing I’ve ever posted. So many comments and tags have said things along the lines of, “This was why I quit writing” or “This is why I hate writing fanfic.” And that’s soul crushing to hear, but I can relate. 

But while there are some crappy and entitled readers, there are also many brilliant ones and I’m so grateful for them. The huge response to this post made me go back and skim through the comments on my old stories, and comments like the one below are about half the reason some of those stories got finished, even if it was months later. 

Comments like these are so rare, but when they do come up, they leave me staring at my computer screen, drumming my fingers on the keyboard, struggling to convey my feelings about how their words have touched my heart. These are the comments that take the longest amount of time to respond to and the ones that cause me to wear out my backspace key the fastest. 

It’s easy to complain, but it’s literally just as easy to praise, so I just wanted to take a moment to recognize all those dear and dedicated readers who have propped me up when I wanted to quit. Readers like you are why I keep writing, and why I even feel honored to do it on rare occasion. 

And fellow writers, keep your heads up if you can. :)

The first type of comment breaks my heart, both as a writer and a reader. It’s why I’ve been tempted to quit a few times, in the rare moment when I’ve gotten them.

The second type is seriously the best and I try to leave comments, even short positive ones, for almost every fic I read and enjoy.

oh my god i’m so tired psychotic does not mean violent it does not mean angry or erratic. it refers to a person suffering from psychosis, a loss of touch with reality that includes hallucinations and/or delusions. psychotic people are not inherently violent and y'all need to understand how much stigma you create when you again and again incorrectly use the word psychotic without even thinking about it

Hey, guys!

My name is Hawke, I’m black, trans, disabled & on a very fixed income, and I need help!

Recently, my bank slammed me with fees for charges that shouldn’t have come out in the first place, and are insisting it’s not their fault. As a result, they won’t waive the fees and now I am broke until either a. the fees are paid or b. they fix their system (and they currently have no estimate when this will be done). So, until then I’m SOL.

Due to the bank’s errors, I’ve been living on credit cards in the mean time, food, cat supplies, bills. My cards are nearly maxed out now, making the monthly bill extremely high- and if I don’t pay it down by October 7th, they’ll tack on interest fees of nearly 30% on top of the debt I already owe.

The credit card bill alone is nearly my entire disability check and I have no other money coming in. There are other bills coming out on the first, I need food, my cats need food. I can’t do this on my own so I’m asking for your help!

I put together this short clip (less than one minute) to show some of the times Christopher has walked on 9-1-1 with and without his crutches.

Things of note:

— His posture is never perfect, head and shoulders stay forward and he tilts to one side.

— Knees remain bent (we call this a “crouch gait” - caused by spasticity and weakness in the lower extremities).

— Though he is able to walk short distances without a mobility aid, he will eventually grab the nearest surface to keep himself steady. The clip from the 5x11 kitchen scene shows him about to place his hand on the table, and when he went to Eddie’s room in 5x13, he touched the wall as he got closer to the door.

[Not included is the moment when Buck arrived at the house to find Christopher leaning on a little table to remain upright. See below.]

- When he’s not using the crutches, you can still hear him moving around the house because 1) he seems to almost always have footwear and 2) he makes sure to fully plant his foot before taking another step. Being “quiet” would only work if someone is a heavy sleeper or distracted.

I figured this might help some of the fic writers out there, but it’s a teaching moment regardless. 😌

The reason he’s almost alwaysin shoes is because you cannot stand when you have CP usually without some type of orthotic device for support like my braces and you have to wear shoes in order for those to work. Also he would probably never be quiet because crutches also make noise. He probably also has to be reminded to not do certain things that feel comfortable but are bad for someone with CP posture wise. Or curling up in a ball when he sleeps because that increases the likelihood that your tenants will grow back together quicker if you have had them clipped. He probably also looks at his feet while he walks at least once every few steps because I know when I was trying to walk on a walker I had to look at my feet to make sure that my feet would move. I would think given Christophers level CP he probably can’t do things that require lots of multitasking I have to do one task at a time because my brain very much works like a one-way highway if you ask me to do something complex I have to either think about it while I’m doing it or do it in an entirely different way. He’s also likely to have scars from surgeries to release tendons to reduce spasticity so that he can move. I have had my tendons released multiple times throughout my life I have had them released on the backs of my ankles knees and on my hips as well I am 38 and sciences come along way but pretty much the only thing to reduce specificity in certain muscle groups would be medication and or surgical intervention. Those medication‘s are usually pretty heavy narcotics/muscle relaxers. He likely also has a highly sensitive startle reflex it’s something almost all of us with spastic cerebral palsy have and it affects every muscle in your body including your bladder so he probably has what’s known as a shy bladder and may have to take medication for that as well. If anyone has any questions please feel free to send me an ask! While it is just fanfiction, accuracy is important because you are portraying someone’s life experience.

FedEx just refuses to deliver to my house. It’s too rural. They just won’t do it. The USPS is gutted. If I need supplies or food or any emergency anything, am I going to risk the package being destroyed or never getting to my house, or grit my teeth and go with the chaotic evil monsters who will nonetheless give me the food or medicine I need? 

And guess what? Amazon is directly and indirectly responsible for both the state of FedEx and the state of the USPS. They were allowed to create a monopoly and they were PREPARED for the further gutting of the USPS we’ve seen in late 2020. In my rural area, with a pandemic on? I think people don’t understand what I mean when I say I have no choice sometimes, the same as I have no choice but to buy Comcast internet even tho it’s overpriced and unreliable. 

It. Is. A. Monopoly. By. Design. We’re being given no choice. The solution isn’t to attack the consumers; it’s to force the government to undermine the company and to actually support its citizens with things like the USPS.

Snarky replies like this only reminds me that so many people don’t understand how the US government works.

Biden can’t make laws. He can only sign them. He can suggest and even champion them to Congress but he can’t say, “I am going to ban all guns as of today.” He doesn’t have the power. Congress can push for a law to do just that. Afterward, that paperwork goes to the Senate. If they like it, they okay it. Then it goes to Biden who signs it, making it a law. Then it’s up to the judicial branch to uphold it. 

That’s how it works. 

This is why for many things, your Congress person and Senator is more important than who sits in the Oval Office. Yes, the president can veto (that is political for “noping”) a law. When that happens it get thrown back to Congress where they rework it and send it back up the chain. But, again, there are very, VERY few things that a president can do without the approval of Congress and the Senate. 

It’s the balance of power. The president is not a king. 

You want gun laws? Vote for the right Congress people and Senators. And that means voting in the primaries for people who want these type of laws. They go on to run as the main candidate in the midterms and main elections. 

I can’t say this enough, YOU HAVE TO VOTE!

Small elections matter just as much as the big ones. Heck, check out your city/town council meetings. You would be shocked at how much of a say you have at them. You want to be listened to? Go to them. Speak up at them. For many of these council members, they were elected by the difference of a few votes. Seriously. We are talking single digit numbers. So, they count on every solitary vote. That means you, the voter, has a stronger voice with them than with say the president. So, if there is something local your want, you go to them rather than writing to the White House. And from there you can climb up the chain. 

It’s work. Make no mistake. But if you want results, this is what you do. It can be done. You just have to take that first step.

a lot of the power the president has is the soft power of being the formal head of his political party and empowered to steer their agenda, which is what biden is doing when he tweets like this. he’s setting the public face of the democratic agenda.

unfortunately republicans have a lot of power in the legislature and their shtick for a while has been arbitrarily sabotaging democratic agenda items even when everyone agrees they’re a good idea.

it is not actually a bad thing that the left and the center do not take biden tweeting half as seriously as the right took trump tweeting, but it does edge over into self-defeating disunity sometimes.
