though the original title of the painting is unknown, it's believed to have been inspired by Gustav Sabac el Cher, a Prussian military musician who eventually married a white woman (Gertrud Perlig)

they were married in 1901, but I don't know how long they courted, so it's possible this is based on another woman in his life before he met Gertrud. or possibly just his willingness to court white women in general? it's unclear. he was biracial, so the painting could have been based on his father's marriage as easily as his own courtship

anyway, here are Gustav and Gertrude after their marriage:

This "joke" was my own and I shared it on my Bulgarian WOT community but the Pattern played a trick on me. It was brought to my attention that according to Aussie slang "Bangaranga" has specific meaning - "having sex with a red haired (man)". Ranga comes from "orangutan". Aussies can correct me on it, ofc. So I made the above very loose connection without any idea that it was close enough! WOW!

Bulgaria winning Eurovision 2026 was insane and absolutely unexpected. The story behind it is also Pattern worthy.
